The First Settler in Marion, South Carolina

The Godbold family of South Carolina descends from the individual who is considered to be the first citizen of the town of Marion. John Godbold who arrived in the Carolina Colony by 1736 was born in Suffolk, England in 1665. Family lore says his first wife and a small child died during the journey from England to America; however, I have not found any source to substantiate this story. What I have documented is a Carolina land grant received by John Godbold on 27 March 1742.

John Godbold supposedly lived to be almost 101 and amassed a sizable amount of land along the Pee Dee river. He lived through the French and Indian War; and left sons and grandsons to fight in the American Revolution.

A good number of the Godbold clan relocated during the 19th century to Alabama and Mississippi and have since moved even further west. A few, though, also chose to keep land along the Pee Dee river as their home The following is the first Godbold family in South Carolina. I am quite bothered by the advanced age of John Godbold for him to be the father of children. If my tertiary information on this man is indeed correct, then Mr. Godbold would have been in his seventies when his children were born.
