The Fryer surname appears to be of English origin
The earliest mention of Fryers in South Carolina included a Richard & Rachel (Holland) Fryer who supposedly migrated from MD to Laurens Co, SC prior to the American Revolution. Their children were John m Ann Rodgers; Reason m Delilah Calvert; Rachel m John Hobby; Cassandra m Simpson Newman; and Sarah m Moses Casey Jr. After his wife's death, Richard Fryer married for a second time to Rachel Nichols in 1795 and moved to Spartanburg Co, SC. Their children: George; Elenor "Nelly" m Moore H Crow; Johnathan, Mary m William B Arnold; Fannie m Washington W Casey; and David.
The earliest Fryer family member living along South Carolina's Pee Dee river was a Drury Fryer, a Patriot in the American Revolution. He was a resident of the Georgetown District (later named Marion District) as early as 1782. His brother named Joel was also an early resident along the Pee Dee. Both of these men were part of the Georgetown District (Prince Frederick Parish) census of 1790. Drury and Joel Fryer had sizeable families, but most of their children appear to have migrated out of the state to points further west.
One named Charles Fryer born c1780 (probably Joel Fryer's son), remained in the District of Marion. He had at least five children including sons William and a Joel. Together these brothers owned up to thousands of acres on the west side of the Pee Dee in present day Florence County.
