FLOWERS Family *
(Related Surnames: Cain, Godbold, Henry, Hyman, Keefe, Martin, Payne)

The first time the Flowers surname is mentioned in South Carolina
records was for a grant of one lot in the city of Charleston in 1694. This grant
was to Jane Flowers. It is not known if this Jane was any relation to the Flowers
detailed in Seller’s History of Marion: “The Flowers family sprang from Henry Flowers,
who came from England about the middle of the 18th century.”
Henry Flowers, the progenitor for the Flowers family referenced here, owned over
1000 acres of land near and along the Pee Dee river during the mid and late 1700s.
He married Patsy Savage and they had a large family whose descendants spread themselves
across the Pee Dee region and beyond. Henry Flowers is credited with building the
first Methodist church in Marion about 1782. It was initially called the “Flowers
Meeting House.” Old Henry's son, Henry, Jr. was issued a grant for land in c1789
for 944 acres on Catfish Creek.
Notes:
During the 18th century, there was also a group of Flowers living in Bladen County
area of North Carolina whose progenitor was an Ignatius Flowers from Maryland.
