“History of the Old Cheraws” states that not later than 1700, Martin Dewitt emigrated to the Pee Dee area from Frederickeburgh, Virginia. He settled on the lower part of Black Creek. A brother of this Martin Dewitt named Thomas Dewitt also came and settled further south on the Pee Dee river. Both Martin and Thomas Dewitt are thought to have been sons of Charles Dewitt of Queens County, Virginia. There is an historical marker on Highway.... near Pamplico, SC which reads:
DEWITT BLUFF
Part of a royal landgrant to Edward Crofts in 1740, was named for the DeWitt family which settled nearby prior to 1767. This area of Prince Frederick Parish was known as Queensborough Township, one of 11 such townships planned by the British Crown in 1730 to foster settlement and to protect the interior of the province.
