Bryant Family

Back to Surname Page

The 'T' at the end of Bryant was supposedly added after the Revolutionary war to distinguish the American families from their noble Irish ancestry; however, I have no idea if this is indeed true.

What I can say with some certainty is that a Jessie Bryan(t) died in Marion District, SC in 1822 leaving a will which named his wife, Mourning Smith, and these children: Elizabeth, James, William, Jessie Jr, Sally, Mary, Mourning, Citsy, and Smith.

The connections from these children that I have researched include:

Elizabeth Bryant (c1772-1851) married Aaron Martin, Sr. (c1780-1841). They had several children including their oldest, Matthew Martin, who married Elizabeth Keeffe.

Sally Bryant (c1789-1859) married David Perritt, Sr. (1784-1872). Their children included a John E. Perritt whose daughter, Telitha, married William A. Keeffe.

Another old Marion District Bryan(t) family of interest to me is that of Lemuel Bryan. I have not satisfactorially documented the following, but Lemuel Bryan appears to have been the father of:

-Sarah Ann Bryan who married Benjamin Keith
-Pethany (Parthenia) Bryan who married 1)Jacob Harrell 2) William Fryer
(Note: William Fryer and Pethany Bryan had two sons that married daughters of William Keeffe)
-Brown Bryan
-Mary Ann Bryan
-Rebecca Bryan
-Elizabeth Bryan
-Thomas A. Bryan
