The Bostick family originally hailed from England where the name was apparently spelled Bostock. Variant spellings also include Bostic and Bostwick. The first Bosticks to settle in America include:
Arthur Bostick came from England in the mid 1600s and settled in Connecticut. (Some of his descendants went to New York).
Charles Bostick/Bostock came from England to Virginia in 1671.
Thomas Bostick came from England to Maryland in mid 1600s.
(Some descendants went to North and South Carolina).
A Thomas Bostick of Maryland (probable descendant of the latter above) married Unknown
Tamer? and had a son James Bostick (1745-1823) who married a Comfort Love. James
moved to North Carolina near Squirrel Creek with his wife and once there had nine
children. His great grandson, Joseph Bostick of South Carolina, termed him “a man
of energy, industry and preservance.” This James Bostick was also said to be a Quaker
and devoted Christian.
One of James Bostick’s sons,Tristram Bostick, became the progenitor for the South
Carolina Bosticks who resided along the Pee Dee river. He settled at Burches Ferry
with his wife Nancy Thomas and children: Tristram, Jr. James T, Bunyan and two daughters
(names unknown). A brother to Tristram, James Bostick, Jr, later followed to same
Pee Dee area.
James T. Bostick (1804-?), son of Tristram, moved for a year back to North Carolina
and then returned to Marion District. Once back he taught school for a year or two
and then began working with a Mr. Harrell who operated a large water-power gist and
saw mill (on Big Swamp). He assumed management of mill and married the niece of Mr.
Harrell (daughter of Jacob Harrell). Soon after, he became a purchaser of mills which
included about 2000 acres of surrounding land. James T. Bostick operated the mills
all of his life. The younger brother of this James, Bunyan Bostick, married a Harrell
also.
