Polly, as she was known to her family and friends, received her nursing degrees from Flowers Hospital Training School of Nurses, New York, in 1929, and the University of the State of New York in 1930. She resided in New York City for many years where she worked as a registered nurse and then as a nursing instructor for the American Red Cross. She and her husband retired to Florida where she has since resided. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Fort Lauderdale. She is survived by brother, Edward Windrow, the Forties, New Ross; niece, Mary and husband Murray Reeves, the Forties; nephew, Lowell and wife Christel Windrow, Kentville; several great-nieces and great-nephews. CROSBY, Leslie Charles - 96, Wolfville, died August 17, 1998, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born March 18, 1902, in Plymouth, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late Everett and Grace (Sims) Crosby. He began his career in Yarmouth at an early age and his entire life involved areas of woodworking. He carried on business in Yarmouth County until 1955, at which time he moved to Wolfville and was appointed to the staff of Wolfville High School as teacher of industrial arts, a position he held for 15 years. He retired from teaching in 1970. He was administrator of vocational evening schools in Wolfville for a number of years. He continued to exercise his skills up until the time of his death. He had been an active member of Wolfville United Baptist Church, serving on several boards and was an honorary deacon. He is survived by sons, Bill and wife Natalie, New Minas; Robert and wife Gail, Dartmouth; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. HOSKING, Charles - 91, 61 MacAuley St., Florence, died October 14, 1998, at home. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Harry and Emma (Burton) Hosking. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence, and a retired coal miner from Florence Colliery. He was an avid sportsman in fishing, hunting and boxing. He was famous for his storytelling and was a talented musician, with his own band, "The Merry Makers". He also enjoyed woodworking. Surviving are his wife, the former Hilda Mae Payne; daughter, Pearl (Mrs. Wes Stubbert), Florence; sisters, Mrs. Jean MacIntyre, Georges River; Mrs. Sybil Maxwell, Berwick; brother, Everett Capstick, Florence; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several step-children. He was predeceased by his former wives, the former Blanche Reeves and Charlotte Phillips; sisters, Florence MacInnis, Josetta Jardine, Ulden MacMullin; brothers, Harry Hosking, Cecil and Elmer Capstick; great-granddaughter, Kelly Byrne. ROPER, Mary Chisholm - 91, Halifax, died November 3, 1998, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Blanche and William Dand Chisholm. Wife of the late Charles P. Roper, she is survived by her daughter, Janet and son-in-law Dr. Bill Murphy, Liverpool. She was grandmother to Jon Murphy, Karen Spaulding and Lisa Sajko and great-grandmother to Michael and Ben Murphy. She was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Reeves. SWETNAM, Ralph Victor Ambrose, Lt. Col CD; LLB - 83, of Halifax, died November 12, 1998, at home. Born in Amherst, he was the eldest son of the late H. Benson and Florence (Ambrose) Swetnam. Surviving are his wife, the former Muriel Crease; daughter, Joan Reeves and husband Donald; son, David and wife Margot; grandchildren, Kate, Heather, Ben and Rachael; brother, Ivan and wife Ada; sister, Margaret (Peggy) Tait, all of Amherst. He was educated in Amherst schools, Kings College, and earned an LLB at Dalhousie University; volunteered for active service in 1940, and spent two years overseas. He joined Maritime Accessories Ltd. in 1946, leaving the position of Executive Vice President after 29 years. He served as president of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada 1966-1967, He spent 15 years with Flow-Water Products, retiring in 1988. Mr. Swetnam remained active in the militia as commanding officer of the Intelligence and Ordinance Corps. and was a life member of the Royal United Services Institute, serving as secretary-treasurer for 15 years. He was always active in St. Matthias Anglican Church and at the diocesan level. He was a keen golfer and bridge player. Ralph will be sorely missed for his wise counsel by his family and many friends. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday in St. Matthias Anglican Church, Rev. Peter Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Christ Anglican Church Cemetery, Amherst. No flowers by request. DELANEY (Savary), Leta Aris - 95, Port Maitland, Yarmouth Co., died in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on December 7, 1998. Born at Cedar Lake, Digby Co., she was the only daughter of the late Murray Savary and Amy (Reeves) Savary Jennings. She was predeceased by her brother, Wade Savary. When she was a young girl the family moved to Costa Rica for a short time while her father was employed by that government. In 1922, while living in Cliftondale, Mass., she married Frederick Delaney of Richmond, Yarmouth Co. The couple returned to Nova Scotia the following year and settled in Port Maitland soon thereafter, where Frederick eventually passed away in 1972. They had one son (Theodore, now deceased). Mrs. Delaney is survived by grandchildren, Mrs. Linda Gailey, Plainfield, Conn.; Judy, David and Daniel Delaney, Andover, Mass.; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. As a fervent lover of nature, Mrs. Delaney was very much at home in the woods, on the beach or in her garden. She and her husband spent many happy winters in their camp at Cedar Lake. She was extremely fond of animals and had been a member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, and a supporter of the SPCA. She was also a member of the Bonnie Briar Rebekah Lodge, St. Andrew's Society, High Hopes Seniors' Club and the Bahai Faith. An avid reader, she was particularly fond of poetry, as well as music and dancing. Cremation will take place under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home. Interment will be at Port Maitland and Beaver River Cemetery.
USHER, Ira Edward - 68, Cambridge Station, Kings Co., died December 12, 1998, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Cambridge Station, he was a son of the late John and Mable (Rogers) Usher. He had worked on local farms and had worked as a Cooper for many years. He later worked for the Department of Agriculture, Kentville, for 31 years, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and ox pulling. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy (Doris) Connors; sons, Murray, Lakeville, Kings Co.; Garry, West Halls Harbour, Kings Co.; Darren, Darrel, Cambridge Station; sister, Winnie Pinch, Waterville, Kings Co.; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews. He was employed with Independent Longshore Association (ILA) for over 31 years. His hobby and life enjoyment was working in the woods on his Christmas tree lot.
