GEORGE HARRIS SMELTZER, - 77, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg Co., died January 10, 1998, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Mahone Bay, he was a son of the late Harris and Sadie (Dauphinee) Smeltzer. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay. He was a sergeant in the West Nova Scotia Regiment, serving in Europe during the Second World War, where he was wounded and mentioned in dispatches. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 49, Mahone Bay, and a member of the legion band. He worked for Lunenburg Foundry and Engineering. He later owned and operated the Midway Supply Store, Maitland, with his wife, Doris. Surviving are his wife, Doris Margaret (Andrews) Smeltzer; daughter, Diana Richards, Wileville; sister, Majorie Thomas, Prince Edward Island; brother, Phillip, Mahone Bay; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Joyce; brother, Frederick. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in St. John's Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay, Rev. George Wawin officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin's Cemetery, Martin's River. Memorial donations may be made to the St. John's Lutheran Church or any charity.
BESSIE LAVINA DOREY - 70, Martins Point, Lunenburg Co., died April 26, 1998, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Martins Point, she was a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Lottie (Sawler) McGinnis. She was a member of St. Mark's Anglican Church, Martins Point. She was a retired employee of Oak Island Inn and Marina as a housekeeper. She was a past member of the ladies auxiliary of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 144, Western Shore. Surviving are her husband, Lewis S.; daughter, Minerva Dorey, Martins Point; sons, Lewis Jr., Glen, Martins Point; sister, Elsie (Mrs. Gerald Clarke), Mahone Bay; Minerva (Mrs. Cecil Eisnor), Halifax; Bernice Hiltz, Lunenburg; Marjorie (Mrs. Mike Sendrowski), Martins Point; brother, Charles, Martins River; a granddaughter; a grandson; two great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews. Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of the late Clement and Almeata (Eisnor) Whynacht. He was a self-employed carpenter.
