VERNIE MAY WEBBER, - 87, Halifax, formerly of Bridgewater, died January 7, 1996, in Melville Lodge Nursing Home, Halifax. Born at Martin's River, she was a daughter of the late Fred E. and Eva (Hiltz) Boehner. She took her schooling in Martin's River and continued her education at Teachers College, Truro, from where she graduated and was awarded her teacher's diploma. After her marriage, she resided at Martin's River and Halifax before moving with her young family to Bridgewater in 1937. She retired from 31 years of teaching in 1977, with 26 of those years being in Bridgewater teaching Grade 3 classes for 16 years, of which eight years she volunteer as acting viceprincipal of Bridgewater Elementary School and taught in a commerical business school for 10 years. She was a past member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church and Altar Guild; assisted with Red Cross blood donor clinics; canvassed for the Red Cross for many years, and served as captain of canvassers for the Arthritis Society in a designated area of Bridgewater. She received many outstanding volunteer awards for her more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service at South Shore Regional Hospital (formerly Dawson Memorial Hospital) including the Air Canada's Heart and Gold Award; Volunteer of the Year for Lunneburg County Award; Certificate of Appreciation Award, all of which were presented by the former LieutenantGovernor Alan Abraham; the Exceptional Volunteer Service Award for Nova Scotia presented by the former Premier John Buchanan and Mrs. Buchanan; the Canadian Volunteer Award presented by the former Health and Welfare Minister Jake Epp, Ottawa; WAYS Awards from Lighthouse Publishing; Certificate of Appreciation from Dawson Memorial Hospital; Certificate of Achievement from Canadian Association of Hospital Auxiliaries; Certificate of Appreciation from Bridgewater Parks and Recreational Committee, and Certificate of Exceptional Achievement from South Shore Regional Hospital. RANDALL ALFRED HILTZ, (Randy) - 23, Martins River, Lunenburg Co., died April 24, 1996, at Martins River. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Carrie Mae (Boutilier) Hiltz, Martins River and the late Donald Hiltz. He received his earlier education at Chester and Mahone Bay and then went on to receive his GED, later working with the South Shore Drug Dependency, Lunenburg and then as a prison guard in Halifax and Truro. At the time of his death, he worked with Keith F. Nauss Sand and Gravel Ltd. He was a member of St. Martin's Anglican Church, Martins River and was a former Sunday school teacher of the church.
