John MCKENZIE and Sarah FROST (mulatto) are living beside Ward SMITH in the 1850 Covington Co. census. A sister of John, Diana MCKENZIE married a James REEVES who is likely a relative of the Joseph REEVES living here next to John. Mary GOODSON d. 1833 in Servier Co. TN or Maryville, Blount Co. TN. Mary GOODSON was the daughter of James GOODSON and Jane, whose household is seen in the 1790 and 1800 censuses. On 19 July 1836 letters of administration for Jane GOODSON's estate were granted to William Vann with William Vann, George W. Dargan and David Williams security for the administrators bond. Theophilus DANIEL m. Peneelope GOODSON, a siser of Mary. They were in Hancock GA (was Washington) in 1812 and then 1818 in Millegeville, Baldwin Co. GA, then 1819 took land in Chaba AL and then appeared in Butler Co.

Thomas day is living next to John TALLY age 34 and Mary, both born in SC. There are a number of TALLY families in this census. This Zachary DAY is likely Zacheaus DAY b. 1784 in Edgefield Co. SC m. Jincy DELANEY b. 1794. He died aft. 1860 in Butler Co. AL. These DAYS were from a family from Edgefield SC which was there from it seems the early 1700s. Relations were settled in Dallas Co. On page 220 in household 618 is an Eliza EVRAGE age 30 b. NC. Children with her are Jesse 7 and Margaret 5 both born in Alabama. Eliza is living between a Rebecca VURDELL 24 and at household 619 a James WRIGHT 40 and wife Mary 41, both born in SC. At 620 is Dennis HODGE age 70 b. in SC. VURDELL is probably VARNELL. A Sept. 14 2000 Genforum posting by efarr@mev.net gives Dennis HODGE b. 1780 SC as married to Lydia "Polly" VARNELL b. 1821 SC. A follow up posting Oct 28 2001 by grbears@hotmail.com gives:
"Passports of Southeastern Pioneers 1770-1823 Georgia Passports" "Dennis M HODGE, b. ABOUT 1780, Fairfield District, South Carolina. He married (1) Nancy RAINS, (daughter of John RAINS). He married (2) Lydia PARNEL, 9 Nov 1836, in Montgomery County, Alabama, b. 1807, South Carolina. Dennis died Sep 1851, Butler County, Alabama. The Dennis Hodge's Will appears in one county while a note on the contest of the Will appears in Lowndes County. The Lowndes County Note list heirs as: sons: Thomas, William, John wife: Lydia - Children of James Walker by daughter (Thomas Walker one of the said children) and states that Lydia dissented from the Will and married Varnell. Land: Cahaba Office, St Steven's baseline, TWP 12N, Range 15E, Section 25. Document # 28003. Nancy: The three daughters of John Rains show in a probate record in Fairfield County, South Carolina. APT 30, FILE 462, FRAMES 040, 041, 043, 050. Also, Milley shows in FRAME 038 and Nancy and Margaret in FRAME 043. Lydia: Also known as Polly. Dennis Hodge, Lewis Grigg, Thomas Bryan are all within 10 lines together on the census. Lydia's name on her marriage license is Lydia Parnel. The marriage of Dennis and Lydia was performed by William Ingram J.P. (See note on Dennis about Will and Lydia's name.) Lydia's name on the legal challanges of Dennis' will was Varnell."

Another individual in the family tree is a Nancy Jane SMITH married a Simeon KYSER and had George Washington KYSER b. 1835 in Conecuh Co. Note this because of KYSERs living near SIMMONS in 1850.

At househoold 629 is a Joesph JAY age 60 and Sarah age 52. They were also both born in SC. I think these JAYS are Joseph and Jesse sons of William JAY and Elizabeth Abigail TOWLES. William JAY's brother was John H. JAY, father of John Stinson JAY who married Elizabeth SMITH (parents were Ward SMITH and Easter EVERIDGE, see 1850 Covington Co. census). He was also the father of David JAY who married Martha Ann ELDREDGE or EVERIDGE. Living nearby is an Eliza EVRAGE.

A Jesse J. EVERAGE married a Rebecca NEIL 11 April 1867 in Butler County AL. Surety was given by Benj. NEWTON.

I have a photocopy of a deed of gift dated 19 Dec 1855, which I saw at the Butler County, Alabama courthouse, and which includes a long list of Hammonds, starting with Kinchen Hammonds. Others mentioned are "Larkin R. Hammonds of Lownds County, Alabama, William Hammonds, Clarissa Hammonds & her husband Henry Harrison, Spear Hammonds, Mary Hammonds, Adaline Stanford and her husband Jack Stanford, Elizabeth Hammonds, Willey Hammonds, who are all over the age of 21 years and John Hammonds who is a minor." These are referred to by Nancy Hammonds, my g-g-g-grandmother, as parties in interest in a deed of gift from her husband, James. Any info you have would be much appreciated. Thanks.
HAMMONS and BRASWELL are both names that are in Robeson Co. NC. A John HAMMONS is in the 1800 census, all "free colored" (Lumbee). A Patience BRASWELL in Nash Co. NC, daughter of Jacob BRASWELL, married first Joseph KITCHEN in Robeson and then Lemuel THOMPSON (whose family is written about on the Kemper Co. page, married into ETHERIDGE/BUTTS). Lemuel THOMPSON is the son of John Theophilus THOMPSON and Alsey BUTT who was Cheraw. The family eventually migrated down to Green Co. GA.
