    24 Aug 1861 - 7 Oct 1864 William was a member of Company E, 7th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers. During his service he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. "Captain Gaines certifies that Prvt. Pettit was wounded in his back by the explosion of a cartridge box caused by it's being struck by a piece of shell that the wound was received at the Battle of Gettysburg July, 2 of '63.
    Mustered out by reason of expiration of term of service but there is the following hospital record with regard to him - admitted Jany. 15th 1864 suffering from gun shot wound of Nates and was discharged.
    Examined by Dr. Brakely Mar. 30th/65 who found gunshot wound of the nates upon the right side the missils ? and a crop the sacrum just above the anus to the left side lacerating and destroying to a great extent the gluteus muscels"
    For this he received a pension of $6 a month.
