This
page is dedicated to the special memory of Donald 'Cowboy' VanEstenbridge
(1949-2000). Don served in Vietnam, September 1970 - March 1971
and was a member of the Americal
Division of the US Army, 23rd Military Police at LZ Hawk Hill.
Don was a dear, dear friend of our family. We will miss him and
will always remember the 'Don stories'.

- Served
as Chaplain in the Army Researve for 30 years and was a member
of the Military Chaplain Association.
- Retired
with the rank of Colonel in 1986 and was awarded the Legion
of Merit.

- He
served in the Marine Corps during WWII.

BRODHEAD,
Daniel (b. 17 Oct 1736 - d. 15 Nov 1809)
- In July,
1775, he was appointed a delegate from Berks county to the provincial
convention in Philadelphia.
- At the
breaking out of the Revolution, Daniel was elected a lieutenant-colonel
(commissioned October 25, 1776) and subsequently became colonel
of the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment, his promotion was March
12, 1777, to rank from September 29, 1776.
- He participated
in the battle of Long Island, and in other battles in which
Washington's army was engaged.
- He marched
to Fort Pitt in the summer of 1778, his regiment forming a part
of Brigadier-General Lachlan McIntosh's command in the Western
Department. Here he served until the next spring, when he succeeded
to the command in the West, headquarters at Fort Pitt. He retained
this position until September 17, 1781, making a very efficient
and active commander, twice leading expeditions into the Indian
country, in both of which he was successful; but was superceded
in his command at Pittsburgh by Colonel John Gibson.Brodhead
was, at that date, colonel of the First Pennsylvania Regiment,
to which position he was assigned January 17, 1781.
- After
the war, he was Surveyor General of Pennsylvania. He was appointed
to that office November 3, 1789 and held the place eleven years,
he having previously served in the General Assembly.
- He died
at Milford, Pike county, November 15, 1809.
BRODHEAD,
Garret (b.
31 Jan 1733 - d. 1804)
- He enlisted
in the New York Colonal troops as sergeant, April 4, 1758.
- Promoted
lieutenant of the Second Regiment, Ulster county troops, in
1760.
- He located
in Smithfield township, Northampton county, Pennsylvania, between
the years 1770-72, as he was taxed there in the later year,
thus: "Garrett Brodhead £70 s10 - and in 1785 £5
s4 d8 for six hundred acres land, five horses, seven cattle."
- He was
in service on the frontier during the Revolution and held a
lieutenant's commission.

BRODHEAD,
Harold Laubach (b: Jul 14, 1924 - d:

- Active
duty 23 Oct 1944 - 25 Mar 1946 in the 158th Infantry Regiment
'Bushmasters'
- 5
months, 18 days of continental service (basic training)
and 11 months, 15 days of foreign service.
- He
achieved a rank of Technician 5th Grade and was a 'Truck
Driver, Heavy'. Which means he drove all types of army
vehicles up to 5 ton tractor-trailers. He hauled supplies,
rations, equipment, clothing and other military necessities.
- Participated
in the Luzon campaign (15 Dec 1944-4 July 1945) in the
Philippine Islands.
- Was
a part of the occupation of Yokohama, Japan until his
discharge.
- He
returned to the U.S. on the Gen. Pope and was discharged
from Fort Dix, New Jersey.
- Awards,

Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (2), Good Conduct Medal
(2), Philippines Liberation Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal,
WWII Occupation Medal / Japan, American Campaign Medal,

- Enlisted
- Spring 1776 as 3rd Lieutenant of the First American Rifle
Regiment (Revolutionary War)
- Appointed
2nd Lieutenant on 24 Oct 1776 in Major Simon Williams' Regiment.
- He
was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Long Island
and was wounded at the battle of Brandywine.
- He
was later commissioned Captain of the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment
under Colonel Magaw.
- Incapacitated
by his wounds Luke retired in 1778.

a Captain's commission in the Ulster County (New York) Militia
in 1728, and it is likely that he was engaged in the Indian

BRODHEAD,
Thornton Fleming
(b: 1822 - d: 31 Aug 1862)
- Died in
Alexandria, Virginia, 31 August, 1862. He studied law at Harvard,
and practiced in Detroit, Michigan. He served through the Mexican
war as an officer in the 15th infantry, and was twice brevetted
for bravery. Resuming the practice of his profession after the
war, he was elected to the state senate, and in 1852 appointed
postmaster of Detroit. At the beginning of the civil war he
raised the 1st Michigan cavalry regiment, at the head of which
he served under Generals Banks, Fremont, and Pope. He died of
wounds received at the second battle of Bull Run. (More

served 1936-1938 in Battery "D" 11th Field Artillery
"On Time", Schofield Barracks, Hawaii
- He
was discharged and returned to Allentown, PA where he
married and started a family.
- He
re-enlisted on 1 June 1944, again went through basic training
and arrived in Europe sometime in December 1944 where
he joined the
HDQ CO 60th Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored "Phantom"
Division as a Private First Class.
- Participated
in the Central European Campaign and the Rhineland Campaign.
- Took
part in the taking of the Ludendorff Bridge on 7 March
1945, he was KIA 14 March 1945 while charging a hill on
the eastern side of the bridge. 17 March 1945 the bridge
collapsed, probably from the heavy artillery firing that
had been going on for 10 days.
- Originally
buried in Henri
Chapelle Cemetery, Belgium on 18 March 1945.
- Disinterred
on 10 Sept 1947 for shipment to US for burial in Gettysburg
National Cemetery. Before the remains were shipped Beaty
changed her mind and had the remains shipped to Derr Funeral
Home to be buried in Arlington Cemetery, Allentown, Lehigh
County, Pennsylvania. <view
