At the time our ancestors came from Ireland there was only the spelling of Dolan

In Ireland; actually 1,268 of them by the 1847 Irish Census. The first group of Immigrants were illiterate, had an Irish accent. The information then was written as it sounded by literate Government workers trying to understand many accents. Over 50 yrs in West Chester, it had quite a few variations. Doolin, Dublin, Dulan, etc. James, Joseph & Edward Dolan from an unknown County in Ireland were all one year apart in age and Immigrated to West Chester, Pennsylvania with in 4 yrs of each other.

All of our relatives immigrated to America just before the famine hit its worst in the 1850’s to 60’s.

Some General Immigration History Background

 Castle Garden Immigration Station:
From August 1, 1855 through April 18, 1890, immigrants arriving in the state of New York came through Castle Garden. America's first official immigrant examining and processing center, Castle Garden welcomed approximately 8 million immigrants - most from Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland, Sweden, Italy, Russia and Denmark.

Castle Garden welcomed its last immigrant on April 18, 1890. After the closing of Castle Garden, immigrants were processed at an old barge office in Manhattan until the opening of the Ellis Island Immigration Center on 1 January 1892. More than one in six native-born Americans are descendants of the eight million immigrants who entered the United States through Castle Garden.

There was no Ellis Island when they arrived to check thorough. Ellis Island opened in 1892

Chronology of the Dolans, Jenkins and Cashman Families in West Chester

GG Grandfather James & Joseph Dolan lived next door to each other from 1860 untill  their deaths, at 110 and 112 Miner St. in West Chester. Joseph's daughter Bridget Agnes actually lived in the house at 112 Miner St until her death in 1945. I suspect strongly that these 2 men a year apart in age were brothers. Edward lived in West Goshen; he came over at the same time, but have yet to get proof that they were siblings.

In my research over the last 25 yrs, it has been interesting to see this family grow. My research is from the news papers of the time in West Chester and surrounding areas. There were several newspapers in West Chester in the mid 1800s. The Morning Republican & The Village Record was the main source of news until the Daily Local News started publishing in the later 1800s. I have transcribed the articles as they were printed at that time. They were not always necessarily grammatically correct. I tried to keep the time span with in one-hundred years. I italicized my notes or documents I have in my possession to give a reference to the facts. Have taken birth dates from Obits as they are incorrect on most Censuses.

John F Dulin, Son of Mr. and Mrs. James E Dulin, 140 W Gay St who enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 1941 is now stationed somewhere in S. America

6.29.1943 DLN

After serving 18 months of foreign soil, Private First Class John F Dulin of the Marines has returned to the states and is having a furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. James E Dulin 140 W Gay St.

Jiggs as he is known to all, arrived in New York by clipper on Wednesday of the last week.

Since that fateful day of December 7, 1941, when the country was attacked and thrown into war, he has served with a detachment of Marine in a naval base in Brazil.

When the country went to war, Private Dulin was home on a one week leave, and upon his return to Quantico, VA, he along with 50 other Marines were dispatched by air to the station in Brazil. They were shipped on the direct order of the President.

The climate below the equator is very different that in this county, although many are under the impression it is extremity hot all during the day. Private Dulin said that when the soldiers are on guard during the night they must wear heavy clothing to keep warm. The days are about the same as the local weather at the present time and when it rains it is a downpour.

When the president of the US stopped there on his return trip to Washington after the famous Casablanca Conference the Marines formed a guard of honor for him. The Army of Brazil are not as well equipped as the US Army and Marine Corps, which are stationed there.

The soldiers of this country have spoiled the natives by spending their monthly pay envelope in a generous manner. The rate of exchange is very good and the soldiers always give them more money than was necessary, thus giving the natives the idea of asking more than their original price.

When asked what the soldier thought of President Roosevelt and his plans for the war and post war periods Private Dulin replied that the men stationed in Brazil wer___ him a good leader for the country and that they were fond of him and they considered him __ at the present time. The feeling of John L Lewis and the striking miners was totally different.

Privet Dulin stated that when he arrived in town on Saturday afternoon he received the grandest feeling when he realized that this was his home and that many of the boys with whom he formerly worked and played and gone to war, there still were a few whom he could sit and talk with about fishing and hunting and a hundred other things.
