THE WELLARD FAMILY OF KENT
The Wellard name appears to be a regional name associated with the County of Kent, England. Most people I have spoken to can trace their Wellard's to Kent.
William Wellard was born approximately
1779 in Kent, England and died 22nd March 1857 Mulbring NSW William and his son Lewis were both sent out to Australia as convicts, William in 1827 and Lewis in 1830. |
WILLIAM WELLARD-CONVICTDuring the course of my investigation into William WELLARD and his family, the following mail lists were of invaluable help. NSW-HunterValley-L@rootsweb.com AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS-L@rootsweb.com Because of the number of others I met through the above lists also researching the WELLARD name I started William1 Wellard. Christened: 21st Feb 1779 St Mary, Minster on Thanet, Kent Died: 22nd March 1857, Mulbring NSW Parents: William Wellard and Elizabeth Sandwell married 1st March 1778 St Laurence, Ramsgate, Kent. Siblings: Mary 1782, Lewis Tomson 1784. Married: 18th February 1804 Cheriton, Kent Elizabeth Peters Died: 21st January 1880, Mulbring, NSW Parents: Henry Peters and Mary Scott. Siblings: Sarah 1784, Mary 1784, Elizabeth 1786, Charles 1788, Jane 1790, William 1792 Benedicta 1795, Harriet 1797, Henry 1782 Children: All christened Folkestone, Kent Lewis1 christened 9th December 1804 Mary christened 19th April 1807 Elizabeth christened 9th June 1810 Stephen1 christened 28th February 1812 Sarah christened 12th January 1816 William2 christened 7th January 1818 Jane christened 31st March 1820 buried 27th January 1822 Cheriton, Kent William Wellard convicted of horse stealing in Surrey in 1822, sentenced to transportation for Life. Arrived aboard Marquis of Hastings (2) 1827 listed on indent as William Peters. [My grateful thanks to Lesley for finding him on the indent]. Elizabeth arrived aboard Burrell in 1832 with her two youngest children William2 and Sarah. This was under the scheme to reunite convicts and their families. Believe that Stephen was also aboard but not listed on the passenger list. Elizabeth applied for a convict servant in 1833 and was assigned William. [See] In 1837 the family settled as squatters on crown land, near William Knox Child’s land, Mt Vincent Estate, built slab huts and cleared and farmed the land. The family appears to have survived and prospered in the Mulbring/Maitland area also moving to the Walcha, and Gloucester areas. Some moved to Awaba and Toronto Whilst the Wellard family are not famous in the founding of Australia, nor great merchants, they are one of the many families to survive transportation to an unknown country, making them heroes in my eyes.

Lewis Wellard and Mary Ann Powell lived together for a number of years before marrying in 1862 after the death of Charles Powell. In 1836 Lewis1 was found guilty of being drunk and disorderly and sentenced to 6 weeks on the "Treadmill". (Film 2724 Bench Book 8 Page 161) Don’t know how or when he ended up in Port Macquarie except him being assigned to A C Innes in 1837. (Must have been a bad lad again, because my understanding is that Port Macquarie was a secondary place of banishment, or perhaps his skills as a bricklayer was required?). |
