It is located off the Mobile Highway (US 31) on McLean Road. Pine trees on a knoll next to a large cattle pond on the William S. Newell property obscures this cemetery from view. The first owner of the property was probably Benjamin Lewis born 1772 from South Carolina who purchased it from the state in 1822. Thomas Randolph Carter (1820-1892) later purchased the property and subsequently sold it in 1859 to Mathew C. Stokes. This land sale consisted of 179 acres with "one acre to be reserved for burying purposes." Years later the cemetery property was sold to the McLean - Stewart families then to the Farm Bureau and is now owned by the Newell Construction Company. Originally, mostly Carter and Bozeman families used the cemetery. The oldest person found by year of birth with a stone is that of Jesse Bozeman born 28 January 1793. His gravestone has been broken by a tree, as are many others stones and some dates are obliterated or nearly obliterated. He was the father-in-law of Thomas R. Carter who is buried there. There are many sunken places indicating burials probably without gravestones. The tallest monument and oldest not yet toppled is to the sacred memory of John W., son of Thomas R. and Lacy J. Carter, October 18, 1848 who died at age four years, three months and eight days. The few later year burials seem to be around the base of the knoll and probably ceased around 1969 with the burial of Herbert York, 1 November 1969 a World II veteran. There is no record of any attempt over the years to preserve this cemetery. A grandson of the Carter's, John Butler Calloway (1874-1958) is said to have kept up the cemetery as long as he was able. A simple fence to keep the cattle out would have helped preserve the graves. Now the years, with no one to care have taken its toll. This beautiful site rising from flatlands to a pine knoll, with a pond lapping along its edges needs care. This historical cemetery needs restoration and preservation to make it a place of reverence honoring past generations. Descendants and all those interested in the preservation of their proud heritage are asked to help. (Copied from the Montgomery County Heritage Book by permission of Bearden, Jr)After special permission from the Newell family the survey was undertaken. The cemetery located on a knoll of pine trees, it was completely over grown with brambles. Trees had fallen and it was hard to find the older graves that were covered with debris. It was obvious that burials of recent dates were on the edges of this cemetery which once was said to have been enclosed by an iron pickett fence. ============= PETER E BOZEMAN Land Office: CAHABA Document Number: 28965 Total Acres: 39.875 Signature: Yes Canceled Document: No Issue Date: August 09, 1837 Mineral Rights Reserved: No Metes and Bounds: No Statutory Reference: 3 Stat. 566 Multiple Warantee Names: No Act or Treaty: April 24, 1820 Multiple Patentee Names: No Entry Classification: Sale-Cash Entries Land Description: 1 SENW ST STEPHENS No 13N 18E 34 Alabama Land Records Recordif (typeof ContainsTipTop != 'function') { hidePop("infoPopupIcon"); } else if(!ContainsTipTop()) { hidePop("infoPopupIcon"); } about PETER E BOZEMAN Name: PETER E BOZEMAN Land Office: CAHABA Document Number: 28966 Total Acres: 40 Signature: Yes Canceled Document: No Issue Date: August 09, 1837 Mineral Rights Reserved: No Metes and Bounds: No Statutory Reference: 3 Stat. 566 Multiple Warantee Names: No Act or Treaty: April 24, 1820 Multiple Patentee Names: No Entry Classification: Sale-Cash Entries Land Description: 1 SENE ST STEPHENS No 13N 18E 33 Alabama Land Records Recordif (typeof ContainsTipTop != 'function') { hidePop("infoPopupIcon"); } else if(!ContainsTipTop()) { hidePop("infoPopupIcon"); } about MEADY BOZEMAN Name: MEADY BOZEMAN Land Office: CAHABA Document Number: 28921 Total Acres: 41.27 Signature: Yes Canceled Document: No Issue Date: August 09, 1837 Mineral Rights Reserved: No Metes and Bounds: No Statutory Reference: 3 Stat. 566 Multiple Warantee Names: No Act or Treaty: April 24, 1820 Multiple Patentee Names: No Entry Classification: Sale-Cash Entries Land Description: 1 SWSE ST STEPHENS No 17N 11E 2 More About Peter Edward Boseman: Burial: Stokes Carter Cemetery, AL Record Change: October 03, 2003 More About Sarah Brown: Burial: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/sc/cheraws/1790/p371.txt Record Change: October 03, 2003 Children of Peter Boseman and Sarah Brown are: i. Notes for Hall Hudson: Will: 13 MAR 1778 Nottoway Parish, Amelia County, VA; no wife listed Most all of the information of this branch of HUDSONS OF AMELIA has been derived through the generosity of numerous other Hudson researcher Two of my most reliable sources are: Jennifer Hudson Taylor and Mr. Van Hudson. There many other researchers too numerous to list here. All other information has been gleaned from genealogy books at Ladsdon Genealogic Library, Vidalia, Georgia and has been so noted. Hall HUDSON later lived in Amelia County, VA. On 25 Mar 1770, he made a deed of gift to his sons Joshua, Richard, and Obediah Hudson of 150, 190, and 190 acres respectively. He made his will on 13 March 1778 in Amelia Co VA (Will Book No. 2, 1780-1786, Reel 29, Pages 10-11). His children are listed in the Bristol Parish register and named in this will. Hall HUDSON with wife ELIZABETH HAMPTON made many land purchases in Prince George County, VA and also sold land in that VA county. Notes for Samuel Bozeman: Many of us have census records that show the same person born in NC in one record and SC in another. A one page article in Georgia Genealogical Magazine Vol 33, 128-9 pg 217 by Albert Bruce Pruitt helps explain how this may come about. 1) the final NC/SC boundary was not established until 1815. 2) Before that deeds were often "willy nilly" recorded in either NC or SC. 3) In particular Rutherford County, NC deeds may have been recorded in Spartanburg District, SC after it was formed in 1785. Also the Holmes line is traceable back in Europe over 14 more generations, but all this is clearly beyond the scope of email messages of this sort. I would hope you will provide me with a descendant genealogy of your husband's family from James Wesley Sellers to your family. Lou that is about all I have gotten from Steve, I will try to contact him again. I did send him a package like I sent to you, with no comment as of yet, So maybe he isn't done with the census work he has been doing. Notes for James DOTY: As quoted from THE DOTY/ANDERSON/SHEPPERD AND ALLIED FAMILIES By Carl V Wright: Benajah Dory, son of James Doty and Phebe Slater, born Piscataway, NJ about 17232. He received by the will of his cousin, Benjamin Martin, certain pieces of land at Piscataway, which he sold to Thomas Skinner, Jr. July 11, 1759 and undoubtedly immigrated at that time with his brother Benjanim to Onslow County, NC. Here, like his brother, he took an active part in public affairs, was representative to the State Assemblies of 1775-1776, participated in the debate and counseled with others, the action which led to the State to be one of the earliest in demanding a separation from British Government, and to be most earnest and prompt in supporting the measure of Continental /Congress. He was one of the delegates to the Convention of 1776, which framed the Constitution of the Colony and held various local positions of trust and honor. He was a member of the House of Commons of North Carolina, 1777-1778. He was married twice, perhaps in New Jersey, as he had a daughter born c1745. No record of marriage has been found. He married second in Onslow County, NC about 1774, to Elizabeth Chativin. Benjah died about 1780 in Onslow County, NC. By his first wife he had at least two children. /Note: taken from THE DOTY-DOTEN FAMILY, by Ethan Allen Doty:.. The two daughters listed were as .. "Number 3400, p 2997, Vol I; a daughter married Brack, Number 3401.. a daughter married Warren." The book continues... "It is thought that they both moved to Georgia."/ Elizabeth, his second wife, lived to be 101 years old and her grandson, Rev. William Edward Doty of Greenwood, LA, who furnished many of the facts in the early history of this branch of the family, remembers hearing her tell how during the Revolutionary War, she lived in North Carolina, and having buried her effects and property in the ground, she helped to make potato hills over them to conceal them from the Tories. Providence Gurley Notes for William Sellers: Although his full name was William Benjamin Sellers, he went by Benjamin. He is alternately referred to as William or Benjamin in various records. Sarah Hickman was Benjamin Sellers' second wife. His first wife was (possibly) Marie, whose maiden surname is unknown at this time. There is a great deal of debate among Sellers researchers about the distribution of William Benjamin's children between his two wives. The chart reflects my current conclusions, and is subject to change. Test. James Hall Cir. C. ************************************** In the June 1762 session of the Edgecombe Co. Court, Benjamin's "orphans" Matthew, Jechonias, and Joel chose their mother Sarah Sellers as their guardian. The court also appointed Sarah as the guardian of Simon and Mary Sellers. In the April 1764 session, the court was notified that Thomas Dixon had married Sarah Sellers, Benjamin's widow and guardian to the children. In the October 1764 session, Joel Sellers was bound out to Kindred Carter. As of February 8, 1997 I do not know the location of Roxdale, but I guess it is in Chesterfield or Henrico County. This parentage for the brothers John Bowman and Edward Bowman of Henrico Parish is speculative. As of August 1995 I have found no docume or abstract of a colonial document which identifies their father. Howev Virginia land entries from the 1660s and 1670s for the Bermuda Hundr Henrico County identify Robert Bowman, Jr as a land owner for property adjoining his father, Robert, Senior. Robert, Jr. is a candidate of the right age in the correct vicinity to be father of John and Edward. For that reason I put him forward. John Bowman, Sr., was guardian for orphan John Bowman, Jr. unt 1679 in Henrico County. Because I have found no land records in the name of John Bowman, Sr., in the Bermuda Hundred area, and since brothers Jo and Edward appear to come into possession of the lands of Robert, Jr., I think of him as the probable father of these men. Of course Robert Jr. and John, Sr. could be brothers. Charles W. Bowman in the introduction to his 1912 book, Bowman Genealogy: Fragmentary Annals of a Branch of the Bowman Family, offered: "In general, there seems little doubt that the Bowmans of Virginia and other states to the south and west are of common stock. It is a family tradition that the earliest ancestor was a ship carpenter who came with the first colonists to Jamestown from London, but this has neither been authenticated or disproved." The abstract of Elizabeth Bowman's deed of Feb. 9, 1718 ties the land acquisitions to the earlier holdings of Robert, Jr., when read in combination with the following abstract from Crozier's Virginia County Records, Vol. II, Taken from Henrico County Deeds & Wills 1725-1737: p. 134 25 Aug 1727 John Soan of Burtee Precinct in Albemarle County in North Carolina, but now in Virginia of one part and Tarlton Woods Henrico County of Virginia . . . for £10 sells said Woodson tract of la in Henrico on south side of James, bounded on lands of Robert Elam, Dr. John Bowman dec'd, and others containing 200 acres being that land boug by William Soane, father of the aforesaid John Soane . . . The Soane sale puts Elizabeth's land now in the estate of John Bowman, deceased, and the description of the land as adjoining Robert Elam's property links these tracts to the 1662-1672 deeds describing the properties of Robert Bowman, Jr. It also tells us that John Bowman was a Doctor and that he was deceased before August 25, 1727. Edward was probably the oldest son of Melatiah and Mary (Curtis) Dillingham, although no record of his birth has been found, The earliest record is of his marriage in 1751 to Marcy Doty. The history of Hanover, Mass. by Barry, states, "Melatiah and Edward Dillingham lived in Hanover in 1754 and were shipbuilders." They were also listed among householders in 1755. Land sales in 1784 and 1788 in Hanover by Joshua, half-brother of Edward, refer to the dwelling, "where Edward Dillingham formerly lived." In 1783 records of the Friends' Society, Pembroke Monthly Meeting, contain the report of Edward Dillingham's removal to the Falmouth, Maine Monthly Meeting. Edward and Marcy appear to have been members of the household of their son, Samuel in the first federal census, 1790, Freeport, Maine. Edward and Samuel were both blacksmiths and family tradition says that they contracted with the stage line to shoe the stage horses when they stopped in Freeport on the post road.
