PARKER b: 13 FEB 1802 in New York ======================== ==== ======= ============ The Town of Remsen until recent years this town occupied a large area in the extreme northeast corner of Oneida county, much of which was covered by the original forest. Remsen was reduced to its present area of 23,364 acres by the erection from it of the town of Forestport in 1869. Most of the territory of the present town was included in the Remsenburgh patent; a small section in the south part in the Servis patent, and another small section in the west part in the Steuben patent, and another small section in the west part in the Steuben tract, as shown on accompanying map. Remsen was erected simultaneously with the formation of Oneida county (March 15, 1798), when it was set off from Norway, Herkimer county, and named after Henry Remsen, one of the original patentees. Black River forms the northern boundary of the town, and Canada Creek the southeastern boundary; it is further watered by Cincinnati Creek, Baker Brook and small tributaries. The surface of the town is well elevated and generally hilly and broken, while the soil is a light sandy loam. A very large portion of the inhabitants of this town are of Welsh descent. Settlement began in Remsen previous to the formation of the town, with the arrival of Schubael Cross from Massachusetts, who in March, 1794, came on westward, left the Mohawk at Utica, and with his family turned northward into the forest. He made a line of marked trees along the Cincinnati Creek through the site of Remsen village, and halted and built a log cabin at what became known later as Burritt's Mills, and afterwards as Bordwell Settlement now Porpoise Glen. Mr. Cross was an energetic pioneer and he soon had a piece of land cleared, and built later a wind power grist mill. This was followed by the erection of a saw mill, both of which were of great utility to the settlers in that section. Mr. Cross took a cold from getting wet in the creek, lost his mental balance, and finally died, his death being, probably, the first in the town. 507 In 1795 three more families came into town; these were John Bonner, Barnabas Mitchell and Amos Bull. Mr. Bonner was an Englishman, but came in from Vermont and settled on the lot afterwards owned by Jenkin Jones; later he moved west. Mr. Mitchell settled on land afterwards owned by his son Milo Mitchell, and his daughter Polly, who became Mrs. Van Slyke, was the first white child born in the town. Amos Bull settled on the tract which was long known as Bull's Commons, and later as the Camp farm; discouraged with the land and his prospects he removed to Floyd, where he died. These pioneers were soon followed into the town by Ephraim Hollister, father in law of Judge Storrs, who followed brick making, and who was elected the first supervisor of the town. Stephen Hutchinson and a Mr. King located in the town about this time, and a daughter of the latter and her husband were probably the first persons married in the town, about the year 1800. Mr. King kept the first public house. It is recorded that the first religious service of a public character was held in Mr. Hutchinson's barn on what became known as the Price farm; he was the first overseer of the poor of the town. The site of Remsen village was settled early by Peter Becker, who built a small log cabin on his hundred acre lot, afterwards selling the property to deacon Platt, of Steuben. The log cabin was soon afterward burned. About the same time Joseph Brownell purchased the 100 acre lot on which the upper tavern was built. He was one of the first three road commissioners of the town. He soon sold out to Oliver Smith and left the town; Gershom Hinkley, a practical surveyor, was elected road commissioner in his place. It was on the farm of the latter at Fairfield Corners that the first school house in the town was built. James Smith and his son Joab came into the town about 1795, and the father opened a tavern in 1797 on the place afterwards occupied by Captain Root; the son died at Sackett's Harbor in the war of 1812. At about this time the families of Jacob Dayton, Nathaniel Rockwood, Solomon Gillett, Perez Farr, Ebenezer Dodd, William Platt, Philip Scott (the first physician in town and an early town clerk) and Rev. Edmund Tefft, the first resident minister, settled in the town. The names of other early comers appears further on. 508 This town and those adjoining it in the eastern part of the county are very largely settled by Welsh. The first of this nationality to locate here was David Jones, but it is not known in just what year he came. Steuben and Trenton, adjoining, already contained a large number of these thrifty citizens. Mr. Jones took up the so called Billings lot, on the Steuben road. In the year 1803 Broughton White and his brother in law, Lemuel Hough, came in from the town of Steuben, and Mr. White subsequently opened a small grocery in a log building on the site of the later store in Remsen village; it was the first mercantile establishment in the town, and Esquire White's chief returns for his goods were ashes. He sold out, after making further improvements, to John Mappa and Jacob Belticher, who in turn transferred it to Herman Ferry. The eastern part of the town remained substantially a wilderness until a number of years after settlement had progressed in the western part. It bore the local designation of "Ninety six", and the first settlers came in about 1816. About the year 1808 the Welsh families of David Manual, John James, Griffith I. Jones, John Owens and Hugh Hughes, all from Wales, settled in the town, and were succeeded by many others who with their descendants contributed largely to the prosperity of the community. It is recorded that Griffith O. Griffiths, of Remsen village, now deceased, was the first Welsh child born in this State west of the Hudson River. It is unfortunate that the earliest record of this town are lost, but it is known that the first town meeting was held in the year of the town organization, 1798, in the log dwelling of Samuel Howe, at Cross Settlement; Mr. Howe was the first justice of the peace of the town. The list of supervisors of the town, however, is complete, through the record in the Jones Annals; they are: Notes for Mary Mercy Sweet: D Sweet Not Stated, Oneida, NY 1810 Children of Reverend Tefft and Mary Sweet are: i. On 15 Jun 1699 Thomas Parker, husbandman of Reading with wife Deborah deeded to his son Jonathan Parker "for love and good will and in consideration of what he has done for me and what he is obliged to do for me and my now married wife, by and obligation bearing date with this deed" all his homestead and eleven acres of land plus five acres in Bare Meadow and six acres of upland in the second division, and two acres of pine swamp "at cousin Eaton's plaine." It was agreed that Jonathan woud not sell the land as long as his parents were living. Witnesses John Felch & Jospeh Burnap. (Middlesex Deeds 12:430.)89 On 13 Nov 1667 Thomas married Deborah Kibbe (1623) , daughter of Edward Kibbe (493) (11 May 1611-ca 1694) & Mary Partridge (1874) (ca 1618-), at Reading, MA.15 Born on 7 Nov 1647 at Boston, MA.89 Deborah died in 1699. Hananiah Parker. Born ca 1638 at Lynn or Reading, MA. Hananiah died at Reading, MA on 10 Mar 1723/4.15 "Hananiah Parker settled on land which bordered his fathers farm. (This it seems was situated about a half-mile east of Dea. Thomas Parker's, on the main road from Lynn to Lowell, now Lowell Street in Wakefield, and upon which place Hananiah's descendants, through his son Ebenezer, occupoied and lived for five generations in the Parker name. ...) The assessors' list of 1667 credits him with a house and farm. He was made a freeman Oct. 15, 1679. He belonged to Reading's military company, of which he was chosed ensign in 1680, and lieutenant in 1684. It is evident that his Puritan townsmen had confidence in his ability and character at an early date, for in 1679 he with tow others were given charge of building a new Meeting-house. He was then chosen by the General Court one of the Committee to 'rectifie and settle the highway between Woburn and Reading.' Consider the energy and industry of our ancestor when we say that in addition to the great work of changing the primeval forest to a fertile farm he performed the duties of selectman, town clerk and representative, each for a long period. The military affairs required much of his time, if not active service at certain periods. Traingings were frequent and an absence cost a heavy fine. Every Sunday found him at church, to which he and wife connected themselves very soon after marriage. The Church records mention his name with respect. As a representative of Reading to the General Court at Boston he served seven years. He was a typical Puritan yeoman, the father of a rugged, honorable family of children. He gave thought to the education of the young. In 1707 Lt. Hananiah Parker and Capt. John Browne were appointed committee 'to provide a Scool Master for the towne school.' They reported that John Webb of Braintree 'be chosen to teach reading, writing, casting accounts and the Latin and Greek tongues' for the three months next ensuing."88 Hananiah made a deposition in 1672 stating he was 34 years old (Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, 4:85). He was made a freeman in 1679, and served as selectman, town clerk, and representative of Reading. On 12 Nov 1706 Lieut. Hananiah Parker of Reading deeded to John Eaton of Reading part of the tlot that was Nicholas Browne's (ibid., 27:535). On 13 Jun 1712 John Parker Sr of Reading, joiner (with consent of his wife Deliverance and honored father Lieut. Hanahiah Parker) deeded his homestead to Jonathan Poole of Reading (ibid., 25:161).89 Hananiah's will, dated 20 May 1703, probated 30 Mar 1724, names wife Mary, sons Jon, Samuel, & Ebenezer, daughter Mary Pool, grandchildren, and brother Nathaniel, and gives to son John 3 acres of meadow which was his grandfather Brown's gift to his mother.89 On 30 Sep 1663 Hananiah first married Elizabeth Browne (3331) , daughter of Nicholas Browne (890) (ca 1601-5 Apr 1673) & Elizabeth [Browne] (ca 1605-1 Nov 1674), at Reading, MA.15 Born on 10 Dec 1647 at Reading, MA.47 Elizabeth died at Reading, MA on 27 Feb 1697.15 Children: 6511 i. Notes for John Tefft: Sex: M Born: ABT. 1614 Died: ABT. 16791 Died: 26 JAN 1675/76 in Killed by Indians in King Phillip's War Notes: The death date of John Tefft is uncertain. Some claim that he was killed in King Phillip's War; however, Timothy Tefft believes that this is from a misinterpretaiton of a letter written by Captain James Oliver, January 26, 1676, the last line which reads "His father, going to recall him lost his head and lies unburied." Joshua was captured on the 14th, brought to Wickford on the 16th, and executed, drawn and quartered on the 18th. Oliver is more likely making the point that John had come to claim what was left of his poor son's body and was unable to recover his head, of which some traditions say that it was used for sport by the soldiers, and stuck upon the fencepost at Smith's garrison. Another clue is that his wife Mary did not sign in satisfaction of her thirds until October 1679. Children of John Tefft and Mary Barber are: 80 i. Samuel Tefft, born 1644 in South Kingstown RI; died 1725 in Indian Country; married Elizabeth Jenckes. ii. Joshua Tefft, born 1646 in Providence RI; died in hanged by King Phillip; married Sara Green; born in half indian blood; died 16 Mar 1642 in or 1672 after child birth. Notes for Joshua Tefft: IN 1675, WAR broke out between the English of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag Indian nation of Southeastern Massachusetts. The United Colonies of New England, a confederation formed by the Plymouth, Connecticut and Massachusetts Bay Colonies, decided to make a preemptive strike against the Narragansetts, to prevent them from joining forces with the Wampanoags. Rhode Island sought to join the United Colonies, but was denied because of its policy of religious liberty. Most of the colony's inhabitants retreated to Aquidneck Island for safety. Joshua Tefft remained to defend his South Kingstown farm, where he was dragooned into the United Colonies troops. He escaped and went back to his home -- only to be captured by the Narragansetts who enslaved him. Anthony maintains that Tefft was forced to fight alongside the tribe during the Great Swamp Fight of December 1675, when several hundred Narragansetts -- mostly women and children -- were slaughtered at their winter refuge inside the West Kingston swamp. Tefft wounded Capt. Nathaniel Seeley, of Connecticut, who later died. Tefft was wounded while raiding the outlying farms around Providence and was captured by English troops. In January 1676, Tefft was taken to Richard Smith's garrison (now called Smith's Castle in North Kingstown). Various Colonial accounts laid out Tefft's crimes -- scalping a miller, firing at Colonial soldiers and wounding Seeley. The United Colonies tried him for high treason. The 1647 law dictated that the condemned person would be drawn and quartered and forfeit all of his land and possessions. The penalty stuffed as many bodily humiliations into one execution as possible. The traitor was hanged, then cut down while still alive. His or her private parts and entrails were cut from the body and burned in the traitor's sight. Finally, the convicted was decapitated and cut into quarters. Nonetheless, the Rhode Island government, in its guardianship order, saw to it that Joshua's son, Peter, inherited his father's land -- in defiance of the legal penalty. As Anthony sees it, Peter's inheritance and a handful of legal maneuvers to protect Tefft land proves that Rhode Island did not regard Tefft as the traitor that the United Colonies did. In his tidy Wakefield apartment, Anthony turns to a decaying set of history books atop his refrigerator. He plucks a volume from an 1864 edition of The Rhode Island Colonial Records, inherited from his great-grandfather, state Sen. Henry Clay Anthony, of Portsmouth. "Joshua Tefft's not in there," he said as he ruffled the pages. "There weren't that many people in Colonial Rhode Island and if things went wrong, it wouldn't have gone unrecognized. The more I became convinced he was unjustly executed, the more I wanted to exonerate him." ONE SENTENCE in the manuscript caught Anthony's eye: "It was in this sequestered place that the celebrated Joshua Tefft was captured and afterwards taken to Wickford where he was drawn and quartered, the only execution of the kind in Rhode Island so far as we know." Driven to know more about Joshua Tefft, Anthony, with some assistance from Sterling, relentlessly mined archives from Hartford to Portsmouth. One afternoon, Anthony became so engrossed in his research he was briefly locked in the Warwick City Hall vault when he failed to leave his work after the clerk turned off the upstairs lights. Hidden in court documents, marriage records, birth and death registers, wills and deeds were splinters of the plot Anthony has written. Yet, slivers are not enough to build a platform of historical truth. Sterling maintains that Anthony's contention that Joshua Tefft was a patriot is a series of "speculations" and "leaps." ==================== Was Joshua Tefft truly guilty of wilful treason? At this distance in time there is no way to know. It is not especially unlikely that Tefft, like John Walker Lindh, acted from conviction. The Rhode Islanders were very independent-minded. They had got on well with their own Indian neighbors (Tefft’s wife was half-Indian) and had been engaged in chronic land disputes with the Connecticut and Massachusetts colonists, who provided the militias with their officer class. The Narragansetts were not technically at war with the colonists until attacked. The militiamen were not all volunteers: many had been forcibly impressed into service, and were not thrilled at the prospect of being dragged from their farms to fight against people with whom they had no grudge, with whom indeed they had been trading and intermarrying for years. Tefft may have been the John Walker Lindh of his day; or he may have been a helpless, naive or foolish man caught up in the tangles of a brutal war. * * * * * http://olimu.com/WebJournalism/Texts/Commentary/Treason.htm Notes for Sara Green: 3/15/98 Researcher rewrites history behind 'oldest' gravestone Craig Anthony discovers, among other things, that Sara Tefft died 30 years later than originally believed. By ELLEN LIBERMAN Journal Staff Writer WARWICK -- For more than a century, Sara Tefft's sole distinction was to be buried under the oldest marked gravestone in New England. As befits such an artifact, the 250-pound fieldstone was pried from her burial plot off Occupessatuxet Cove and stored with other things of rare vintage in what was once a wine cellar under the John Brown House in Providence. As far as historians were concerned, Sara Tefft was no more than that - a rough chunk of stone, crudely inscribed: HERE LIETH THE BoDYE of SARA TEfft IN thE MARCH 16 1642 She was cast as a spinster, childless. Her presence in Warwick seven months before the first settlers purchased land there was a mystery. But Craig Anthony, an 11th-generation Rhode Islander with a fierce pride in his state's heritage, thought Sara Tefft's life was worth examining. After six years of trawling a sluggish sea of Colonial-era documents, Anthony has had the rare privilege of rewriting history. Sara Tefft actually died in 1672, and Rhode Island can no longer claim the oldest marked gravestone, Anthony has discovered. Far from being a barren, single woman, Tefft bore two children and was twice married to murderers who were executed for their crimes, Anthony maintains. "This is like detective work," said Anthony. "And it's a great story. It has everything in it: sex, murder, war and racial conflict." His conclusions have persuaded the steward of Sara Tefft's memorial, the Rhode Island Historical Society, to amend its documentation surrounding the stone, which is occasionally displayed, said Linda Eppich, head curator. More importantly, said Anthony, the fate of Sara and second husband Joshua's only son, Peter, is also the key to rethinking history's take on Joshua Tefft, one of the most notorious colonists of his time and the only Rhode Islander to be drawn and quartered for treason. "The recorded histories done by (the Puritan chroniclers) exhibited immense bias," Anthony said. "I wanted to write history from the point of view of a Rhode Islander and stir debate." SHE WAS BORN Sara Greene, most likely an illegitimate daughter of John Greene Jr., a Warwick man who was eventually elected deputy governor of the colony in 1690. Anthony first found a reference to her in court records -- she was called to answer for the crime of fornication. Sara Greene avoided four sessions before the Colonial magistrates; her father eventually paid the 40-shilling fine. Greene next appeared as the wife of Thomas Flounders, Anthony's research shows. In 1670, two years after they were wed, Flounders had a land dispute with a man named Walter House. One day they came to blows over it in Flounders's Narragansett shop. Flounders beat House to death and fled. Rhode Island and Connecticut, which had been squabbling for decades over the boundary between their infant colonies, fought for jurisdiction over the case. But the Rhode Island constables found Flounders first. The court convicted him of felonious manslaughter and he was executed that November. Young widow Sara Flounders next married Joshua Tefft, who eventually became a prominent villain in the Puritan accounts of Colonial Rhode Island. But she did not live to see this ignominy. Sara died March 16, 1672, two days after giving birth to a son, Peter. There is no record of how old she was. IN 1675, WAR broke out between the English of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag Indian nation of Southeastern Massachusetts. The United Colonies of New England, a confederation formed by the Plymouth, Connecticut and Massachusetts Bay Colonies, decided to make a preemptive strike against the Narragansetts, to prevent them from joining forces with the Wampanoags. The more I became convinced he was unjustly executed, the more I wanted to exonerate him." THE MISINTERPRETATION of Sara Tefft's stone began in one cemetery and ended in another. Her bones lie in a grave on the Greene family homestead in Warwick, once a Colonial outpost. In the mid-1800s, Dr. Usher Parsons, a physician and an amateur historian, read the downward slant of the seven's top line as a four. In 1868, the historical society removed the stone for safekeeping. A descendant put up a slate copy that repeated Parson's transcription and tacked on the phrase "in the 67th year of her age." Three-and-a-half centuries transformed the 17th-century wilderness to the crowded bayside suburb of Conimicut. The "new" stone toppled from its foundation and lies in fragments in an overgrown tangle off Cole Farm Road. But subsequent scholars never changed the way they read that inscription. Craig Anthony began his journey to a new perspective on Sara Tefft -- and her place in Colonial Rhode Island history - at the Tefft family plot in South Kingstown. Anthony was exploring an abandoned rail bed that slices through the backwoods of South Kingstown when he stumbled on a field of stones, breaking the earth at regular intervals like teeth. Anthony, who had been working on a project to record all of the state's historic cemeteries, recognized it as a graveyard hosting people too insignificant to rate carved stones or settlers who predated such civilized pretensions. He reported this find to John Sterling, an authority on historical cemeteries and the head of the state transcription project. Sterling turned over everything he had on the cemetery plot, including an unpublished 1880 manuscript. ONE SENTENCE in the manuscript caught Anthony's eye: "It was in this sequestered place that the celebrated Joshua Tefft was captured and afterwards taken to Wickford where he was drawn and quartered, the only execution of the kind in Rhode Island so far as we know." Driven to know more about Joshua Tefft, Anthony, with some assistance from Sterling, relentlessly mined archives from Hartford to Portsmouth. Yet, slivers are not enough to build a platform of historical truth. Sterling maintains that Anthony's contention that Joshua Tefft was a patriot is a series of "speculations" and "leaps." "You could interpret it that way, I wouldn't. When you add up all the facts, it's hard to see him as a poor victim." As for Sara Tefft, one of the unluckiest brides of the New World, Sterling said, "it's a terrific story and I'd like it to be true." There's no doubt that Anthony has shattered the myths surrounding Sara Tefft's stone, Sterling said. He has included this historical correction in his 1997 book on Warwick's historic cemeteries. The oldest gravestone record will go out of state -- most likely to one in either Dorchester, Mass., or Connecticut, both dated 1644, he said. It doesn't seem like a record worth fighting over. But Robert P. Emlen, the Brown University curator who has written about the Tefft stone and teaches a course on gravestone studies, said that every monument is another piece of a faded mosaic that informs the present. "They are carved in a certain way and use language that is useful to us," Emlen said. "Gravestones provide a window into a historical past. They are the material evidence of lots of people for whom no other written record exists." Film #037237, Sweets of Rhode Island. Vol. 1 Books 1-5. John (1) came in 1630 and settled in Salem, Massachusetts. John was one of the first purchasers of land in Providence, Rhode Island. 1637 the lot where the old state house now stands. John, born 1579, proof in Hackery, Middlesex, England. He died sometime after Jun 6 1637, records in Salem, Mass. His name is in first short-hand book of Salem. He married about 1619 Mary (WESCOTT) in England. The family came in ship "The Mary and John" which sailed from Plymouth, England, 20 Mar 1630 and was one of the (Winthrop Fleet). They arrived in Nantucket, Mass. on 31 May 1630. Not proven John SWEET (1),Family ID # 175 the immigrant ancestor, was born about 1598 or before since his son, James (3), was recorded as being born in 1622. John Married Mary (WESCOTT). The records state that their children were born in Wales. They were doubtless of Welsh origin, and were the progenitors of the SWEETS of Warwick and Kings Town, Rhode Island. (Genealogies of Central New York, (Vol. 1, pg. 420.) In the book," Rhode Island Genealogies" pg. 911; it states that, John and James Sweet, brothers were of Welsh birth. It is well established that John SWEET (1), their father was a man of some years beyond youth when he arrived in America. John (1), is of record as of Salem, Massachusetts, as early as 1632 when his land there was referred to. He had a grant of land in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1637, in which year he died, and his widow then received a grant. " Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island," pg. 195 reads; John SWEET was living 6 Jun. 1637, but died sometime during that year presumably before the land grant was official. Later in Salem' Mary, is called "WIDOW SWEET" .It is possible that John SWEET never went to Providence, but died in Salem. The following from a manuscript by CHAPLIN, (which is in the Historical Society of Rhode Island) states the land must have been granted to John SWEET (1) for his second son, James SWEET (3), in a deed dated 8 Nov. 1686 mention all right of land in Providence, as my father, John SWEET, was one of the first purchasers thereof. Mary (WESCOTT) SWEET, widow of John SWEET (1), and their three children moved to Providence, Rhode Island and upon her eldest son, John SWEET (2), only eighteen years of age and James (3), two years younger fell the responsibility of providing for the family. Mary, widow of John (1) married a second time the Rev. Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) and after their marriage, her new husband changed her daughter's name from Maribah to Renewed. After the death of HOLLIMAN, 17 Sep. 1659, Mary SWEET HOLLIMAN returned to Salem where she died 31 July 1681. The death of John SWEET (1) and the subsequent marriage to Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) doubtless hastened their "removal" to Warwick, known at the time as Shawmuch. The Sweet family of Rhode Island is for the most part descendants of these two brothers, John (2) and James (3). They were among a list of persons received as inhabitants of Warwick, Rhode Island previous to 5 Jun. 1648. (Austin's Genealogical Dictionary). They and their descendants spread through out the neighboring towns of East Greenwich, Coventry, Exeter, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Warwick, Portsmouth and Prudence Island, Rhode Island, and there are still many living in these towns in Rhode Island today.
