Briden
The ancestry and two generations of descendants of Samuel Briden,
who immigrated from Lancashire, England to Rhode Island in 1854.
First Generation
1   Walter Briden married Elizabeth Jenkins. Their first child was baptized at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England; their second through fourth children were baptized at the New Connection Methodist Church, Oldham Street, Manchester, and their fifth child, Samuel was baptized at the Stamford Street Methodist Church, Ashton-under-Lyne {1}. Those of the name Briden found in Lancashire before 1800 include {1}:

Manchester, Lancashire, England. He married Ann Scoles on 18 February 1822 at St. Mary's Church, Oldham. Their child was baptized at St. Michael's Church, Ashton-under-Lyne. John and Ann Bryden had a child, Fenton, baptized at Wigan, 18 June 1826 {1}.

According to his death record he was born in March 1811 at Chester, England {16}. Samuel married by about 1832 to Hannah Pollitt. She was born in England to John and Hannah Pollitt {16}. Samuel Briden died 20 January 1881, age 69, at Central Falls, RI {16, 15 [1881:1158], 23}. Hannah Briden died 25 July 1887 at Lincoln, RI {15 [1887:595], 23}. They are buried at Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI {23, 24} [view cemetery record]. Samuel Briden arrived in New York, 5 July 1854. He became a naturalized citizen 15 Sept 1863 at the US District Court, Providence {19}. Witnesses for him were Thomas Miller and John Tetlow {19}.
In 1865 Samuel Briden (54y) was living in the Central Falls section of Smithfield with his wife Hannah (53y) and children Thomas (14y), Sarah (15y), Samuel (24y) and Robert (22y) {14 [10:223]}. Walter and John had married, and moved out, William had probably died.
The children of Samuel and Elizabeth Briden were baptized at St. Michael's Church, Ashton-under-Lyne {1}. This is in the vicinity of Manchester.

He married 10 July 1859 at St. Paul's Church, North Providence to Jane Riley, age 19, of Cumberland {15 [1859:628]}. She was born about 1840 in England, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Riley. John Briden died 26 November 1898 at Central Falls {15 [1898:563]}. Jane died 13 January 1918 {23}. She is buried at Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI {23}. John Briden arrived in New York with his brother, Walter, on 18 January 1854. He became a naturalized citizen 15 March 1884 {20}.
John Briden was a spinner at the time of his marriage. In 1861 he was a weaver, living in Smithfield {16}. In 1865, John Briden (31y) was living in Central Falls, Smithfield with his wife Jane (25y), children Walter J. (5y), William T. (3y), and Albert E (1y) and his brother Walter and his family {14}. John was living in Lincoln in 1872 {16} - 1880 {10 [ED 119, p. 42]}. In 1900 widow Jane Briden was living at 2 Kendall St., Central Falls, RI with her daughter, Bertha, and son-in-law, William Harley {11 [ED 116, p. 15]}.

He married Lydia Holland on 25 September 1858 at Smithfield {16, 15 [1858:682]}. She was born in England, in September 1838 {11}, the daughter of James and Sarah Holland {16}. Lydia died 6 May 1924, age 85 years, at Providence {18[28:296], 23}. Walter Briden died 16 September 1925, age 89, at Providence, RI {18 [29:128], 23}. They are buried at Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI {23}. Walter Briden arrived in New York with his brother, John, on 18 January 1854 {21}. He became a naturalized citizen in the October term of the RI Supreme Court {21}. Witness for him were Matthew Wardle and H.F. McLoghlin.
Walter and Lydia Briden lived in Smithfield, RI from 1858 to 1869, as mentioned in their marriage record and the birth records of their children, {16}. Walter (29y) was living in Central Falls section of Smithfield in 1865 with his wife Lydia H. (30y), Samuel J. (5y), Sarah J. (3y) and Robert (1m) and his brother John and John's family {14 [10:228]}. Walter was in Lincoln from 1872 to 1877 {16}. In 1880 Walter was living at 91 Washington St., Lincoln, RI {10 [ED 118, p. 6]}, and in 1900 he was living at 9 Washington St., Central Falls with his wife, son Herbert, daughter Lucy, and son-in-law Joseph J. Morrissette {11}. Note that Lincoln was set off from Smithfield in 1871.
Walter Briden worked in a mill as a weaver (1858) and operative or thread maker {16}.

He married Alice Burtonwood on 27 November 1867 at North Providence {15 [C1867:586], {17}. She was born in 1840 {23}. Robert died 6 October 1908 at Providence, RI, age 66 years. Alice died in 1909 {23}. They are buried at Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI {23, 24} [view cemetery record]. In her will, dated in 1909, Alice Briden, widow of Robert Briden, left her posessions to Sarah (Briden) Hurdis, sister of Robert Briden. If Alice were predeceased by Sarah, then the posessions were to go to Edgar B. Hurdis {16}. Apparently Robert and Alice Briden left no children.
15   Thomas3 Briden (Samuel2 Walter1) was born about 1846 in England. He married 26 November 1867 at Pawtucket, RI to Louisa Collins, age 18, of Pawtucket {15 [1868:634], 17}. She was born about 1849 in England to William W. and Selina Collins. In 1867 Thomas was living in Central Falls. In 1880 Thomas was living on Mill St., Pawtucket, with his wife Louisa, sons William and Charles, and William Collins {106 [ED 128, p. 27]}.

He married Mary Willoughby on 9 March 1886 at St. Georges Church, Lincoln {15 [1886:375]}. She was born in June 1862 in Ireland, the daughter of William and Mary (Faulkner) Willoughby. In 1886, William was a resident of Lincoln. In 1905 he lived at 135 Weeden St., Pawtucket {22}. He was a jeweler (1886-1905 {22}).

He married Grace A. Davenport on 27 January 1892 at Lincoln {15 [1892:327]}. She was born in February 1868 in England. In 1900 Charles and Grace Briden were living at 11 Kendall St., Central Falls with their two children and Grace's father, James Davenport (b Dec 1845 England) {11}. In 1905 they lived at 63 Cole St., Pawtucket {22}. Charles was a machinist (1905 {22}).

He married Matilda Bates on 27 October 1886 at Lincoln {15 [1886:380], {16}. She was born in March 1866 in England to Jonathan and Susan (Lindsey) Bates. Robert Briden died in July 1963 {40}. At the time of his marriage, 1886, Robert was a patternmaker, and a resident of Lincoln {16}. Robert and Matilda Briden lived at 175 Cross St., Central Falls, RI (1900-1905 {11, 22}). Robert was an overseer (1905 {22}).

In 1900 they lived at 5 Washington St., Central Falls {11}, and in 1905 they lived at 25 Summer St., Central Falls {22}. Frederick was a foreman and worked at 163 Exchange St. (1905 {22})

Amy died 15 Sept 1897 at Pawtucket {156 [1897:715]} (12 Sept 1897 {23}). George married second to Clara Townsend on 1 February 1899 at Central Falls {15 [1899:346, 433], 22}. She was born March 1874 in England. Clara died 24 April 1934, age 60, at Providence {18}. Wives Amy and clara are buried at Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI {23}. George Briden lived at 666 Weeden St., Pawtucket, RI (1900-1905 {11, 226}). He was a machinist (1905 {22})

He married Carrie A. King on 25 November 1891 at Pawtucket {15 [1891:400], 17}. She was born in RI, and died 4 October 1918. In 1900 they were living at 829 North Main St., Pawtucket, RI {10}.
