KESTELL - KAUTZER

Descendants of Martin Kautza

Generation No. 1

1. MARTIN3KAUTZER (IGNATZ3 KAUTZA, VALENTINE1) was born December 12, 1850 in Alstadt, Silesia, Prussia, and died March 05, 1915 in Hewitt, Wi. He married MARY (MARIE) MAGDELINE MARKEE, daughter of FRANK MARKEE and SUSAN MARKEE. She was born September 01, 1850 in West Sparta, Livingston, Co. New York, and died January 01, 1901 in Hewitt, WI.

More on Frank and Susan Markee

Notes for MARTIN KAUTZER:
Martin immigrated to the US on the ship Union which sailed from Port Of Bremen to New York and arrived Aug. 21 1856. The family settled in Milwaukee for close to ten years before moving to the St. Nazianz area for about sixteen years and they moved to Hewitt, WI where he farmed until his retirement.
At the time of Martins of Martin's retirement, he made his home with his daughter Theresa. Ma rtin and Anton his brother were married to Markee sisters. Some of the Kautza family members changed their name to Kautzer. Some of the Anton family did not change, and also some of the Joseph family still uses the old spelling. Martin and his wife Mary are buried at St. Michael's Cemetery at Hewtitt WI.

Notes for MARY (MARIE) MAGDELINE MARKEE:
Mary was born in New York, per her death certificate the city of birth was not stated. An 1850 Census from the state of New York shows her father Frank Markee as Living in Township of West Sparta. That is what I am using for her City of birth. Another census for 1860 shows Frank Markee living in Town Eaton WI. So I am assuming that somewhere between 1850 and 1860 Frank moved his family to Wisconsin. This is where she met and married Martin Kautzer.

Mary's date of birth is also in question. Her death certificate states that she was born on Sept . 13, 1850. The church record states that it was Dec. 11, 1847. The funeral car d and her tombstone state that it was Sept. 1, 1850. Since it is on her tombstone I am using Sept. 1, 1850. The funeral card was sent to me by Bill Zinzli, an d verification of the tombstone was also by Bill Zinzli.

Mary is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Hewitt, Wi.
Mary Had been Ill for about one year, an d died from general debility asthma. Source: death certificate.
She was listed as a farmer's wife under occupation. Her parent's names (Markee) were misspel led on her death certificate. It was spelled Marker.

Notes for WILLIAM KAUTZER:
Not much is known about Williams earlier days. His mother died when he was but eight years old. He enlisted in the army in World War I.

He enlisted at Ft. Geo.Wright,Wa. November 14, 1917. Served in World War 1 as a Sergeant in The 659 th.Aero Squadron,Air Force Service United States Army in France and was discharged July 24, 1919 with an Honorable discharge. His duties were: My brother Forre st said my father told him he was a machine gunner, my sister Nora said he was a cook. He must have been a cook, as I have just recently recieved a letter wri tten by him to his sister Agatha that states he had been on other duties for three months and now he was going back to his old job at the officers mess. This letter was sent to me by William Zinzli. It had been in an old cigar box that Agnes Hennes had. Agnes is the widow of Edwin Hennes, grand son of Agatha Kautze r, my fathers sister. in his letter he also stated that he would be coming home soon, but the family never heard from him.

THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT HAS BEEN TOLD TO ME BY MY MOTHER, SISTERS AND BROTHER.

After his discharge he made h is way to Texas or New Mexico, there he engaged in running bootlegged liquor from the Mexican border. (this was the time of prohibition and was illegle). At s ome time he used the name of Kent to hide his identity from the law. I am told that Kent was the name of one of his aunts, although I can not find a Kent on t he Kautzer side of the family. She may have been from the Markee side of the family. He was also a gambler.
At some time in the 1920's he made his way to Bis bee AZ. Bisbee at the time was known to be a good place to hide from the law. William picked this town as he was on the run from the law when he went to Bisb e. There he met Ewart & Doris Terry. William and another man made a pact with E wart to take care of Doris and his children if anything should happen to Ewart. At the time they had one child and were expecting another.
Ewart & Doris then went to Northern California to visit relatives. There Ewart met with an accident, he drowned in the Sacramento River. Ewart was buried in Los Angeles, Ca. Fr om there Doris made her way back to Bisbee. The other man was no where to be fo und, so William married Doris. William raised her two children, and they had three more of their own.

In Bisbee he worked in the copper mine and later when the mine went to an open pit, as a salesman. William then became ill, he was sent to the veteran's hospital in Tucson then on to Los Angeles veteran's hospital l where he died. I have been told that working in the mines caused his illness, but on the other hand he was a heavy drinker and loved to carouse and fight. H e was a big tough man, one of the stories is that there was no man in Bisbee th at was not afraid of him. Even the sheriff and his deputies.

Cause of deat h: Infarction of mycocardium due to arteriosclerotic coronary thrombosis. Willi am is buried at the Evergreen cemetery in Bisbee Az.

MY MEMORIES OF MY FATHE R:

My memories of my father is that he was a big man. I remember one time w hen we coming home from one of his trips, the door on my side opened (I think I opened it) all I remember is this big hand grabbing me by the seat of my pants and pulling me back in the car. I was very scared, he was my hero after that. I also remember him letting me work in his garden with him,(he loved his rose garden) I don't think I did much but it was a treat to work with him. Maybe that is where I got my love of gardening. William took me every where with him, of c ourse my brother Forrest said that he took me so that the law would not be susp icious of a man with a cute little kid in the car (he was still engaged in boot legging). I of course remember only that it was a treat to be with my father

Notes for DORIS VIVIAN KELLY:
Doris was born in Los Angeles, Ca. Her father Claude Kelly died before she was born. She was raised by her mother, grandmother and uncle Charles. After her marriage to Ewart Terry she moved to Bisbee Az. Doris and Lois her sister, marrie d brothers. Lois married Rube Terry. It has been said that the brothers were disinherited, after their marriage to the Kelly girls (the Terry's were quite well off). Her first born, Forrest was born in Bisbee. When Doris was expecting he r second child Barbara, they went to Northern California to visit relatives of Ewart. Ewart died in the Sacramento River from drowning as a result of an accident. Doris sent her husband to Los Angeles for burial. After the burial she ret urned to Bisbee, where she then married William Kautzer. Ewart, William and ano ther man had a pact that if anything should happen to Ewart one of the other me n would take care of Doris and her children. When Doris went back to Bisbee the other man was nowhere to be found. So she married William, Barbara was then bo rn in Bisbee. Barbara grew up thinking that William was her father, she later f ound out he was not. Doris and William had three other children, Marie (Billie) Nora and Mary also born in Bisbee. When William became ill Doris moved the family to Tucson, AZ. As William was in the veterans hospital there, and Barbara h ad already moved there with her husband Alex. After William's death Doris and h er three daughters lived in a few places until Forrest and Norma Terry helped h er buy a house on Nearmont Dr. Doris had a hard time staying in one place, as h er two teenage daughters kept getting them kicked out of places. Billie and Nor a were wild teenagers.Mary was to young to cause much trouble. Doris then m arried James Palmer in 1956 and divorced in 1969. Doris was very happy in her h ouse, it was small, but it was hers. She loved to garden and her yard was her p ride and joy. After the death of her daughter Marie she moved to Santa Clara, California to be close to her other two daughters, Nora and Mary. She was never happy in California and longed to go back to her house in Arizona, but she beca me ill and died 3 years after she moved to California. Cause of death: Small ce ll carcinona of the Lung. Doris is buried at: Mission City Memorial Park in San ta Clara, CA. Social Security Number: 526-30-9679

Notes for MARIE (BILLIE) KAUTZER:
Marie was the first born of William & Doris Kautzer, Marie was nicked named Billie. My mother told me that she was nicked named Billie because our father want ed a son.

Warren is listed as Billie's city of birth, but we have always referred to it as being Bisbee, as Warren is in the area of Bisbee.

Just before our father died our mother moved the family to Tucson Az. Barbara, our oldest sister had already moved there with her husband and children. And our father w as in the veteran's hospital there.
Billie lived with her mother, and her two younger sisters, Nora and Mary until she married Rudy Contreras.

She met Rudy at a cocktail lounge where she was working. Billie was a very beautiful woma n and had a lot of boyfriends. Rudy was very persistent in his pursuit of Billi e. She finally agreed to marry him, as she thought he had money. Rudy was the owner of a service station on Grande Ave. in Tucson. Sometime after the marriage Rudy lost the service station and went back to the carpenter trade. Billie and Rudy had four children, Larry, Steven, Mary, and Jon.

Billie became very sickly; she was always going to the doctor. They told her she had a variety of ailments, she had having cancer. She had been sick for at least 10 years before her death.

Cause of death: Adeno carcinoma of the w/metastases. Billie is buried at Holy Hope Cemetery in Tucson Az.

My memories of Billie are as follows:

Billie was a fun loving girl and maybe a bit wild in her younger days. I remember one time she was with some friends and my father was chasing them, for whatever reason I don't know. I had a good old time during this chase, I kept telling pop to hurry and get them as they went faster and faster.

Pop sent Billie to a convent in Phoenix Az., she was about 14 or 15 at the time. She spent about a year there with the nuns. During this period she learned many things, one of which that cleanliness is next to godliness. But she was still wild .

Billie and Nora would go out on beer busts in the desert, one time she woke me up when she came home and told me that they had heard some kittens mewing . Well this was the wrong thing to tell me, as the next day I woke them up earl y and pestered them till they took me out to get the kittens. She helped me car e for the kittens though.

Other times she was my champion; she would chase the kids away that were giving me a hard time. I used to get after the boys for shooting Beebe's at the birds, and they would chase me, of course I always went home so that my older sisters could take care of them. They soon learned not to shoot the birds in our neighborhood.

After the birth of my oldest son Scott, Rudy my husband lost his job, and we were pretty broke. Billie would help me with milk and food for Scott, even though they were not that well off them s elves.

When I told Billie that we were moving to San Jose, she told me that she was there once. It must have been before our father died, as I do not remember her leaving Arizona.

After we moved to California, Billie and I wrote letters to each other. We would write mostly about our children. How they were doing in school and send each other photos of the kids. I regret that I did not save all of her letters, but I do have some for the period of 1967 through 196 9. For some reason I saved those years.

I miss my sister very much.

iv. JON RAYMOND CONTREAS, b. December 19, 1963, Tucson, AZ.

18. NORA ELIZABETH5 KAUTZER (WILLIAM4, MARTIN3, IGNATZ3 KAUTZA, VALENTINE1) was born December 20, 1934 in Don Luis, Cochise Co. Arizona. She married (1) GEORGE MENDOZA. He was born March 15, 1928 in Tucson, AZ., and died March 1968. She married (2) GERALD (JERRY) VERNON ENGLISH. He was born May 16, 1927 in San Jose, Ca.

Notes for NORA ELIZABETH KAUTZER:
Nora was the second born of William and Doris Kautzer. Don Luis is listed as he r city of birth, but we have always referred to it as Bisbee.

Nora lived in the Bisbee area until the death of her father William when she was 14 years old . Her mother moved the family to Tucson just prior to the death of William as h e was in the veteran's hospital there. Also the oldest sister, Barbara, and her family had already moved there.

During the time before her father's death in Bisbee Nora and her siblings, Forrest, Barbara, and Billie roamed the hills of Bisbee doing the things that kids do. Mary the youngest was to young to do t he things that the older kids did. Nora has very fond memories of these times, except the fact that we were very poor.

Times were very hard for her in Tucson as well; she went to school and did not graduate from high school, as she w anted to earn a living. At one time she worked in a factory sewing moccasins. S he used to bring them home to sew, as it was piecework and the more she did the more she got paid.

In Tucson she met and married George Mendoza. George and Nora adopted Catherine Elizabeth. The family went to San Jose Ca. in 1959 to visit her sister Mary. When they got there they were broke, so George had to g et a job, intending to go back to Tucson.
They never did, we all lived in a sm all three-room duplex till they could afford to move to their own place. Them eventually bought their own home.

Nora worked at a factory packaging ready-made pizzas, and then went to work at International Paper Company. She then went to electronics' school and got a job as an electronic assembler. One night whe n she was coming home from work she had an accident, it was not a very bad one but she got hurt nonetheless. She got a settlement from the insurance company a nd she opened her first Mexican food restaurant. She called it Clarita's, her m other in law who had then passed away.
In 1976 she lost the lease on it and reopened at a new location in Santa Clara in 1979. She retired in 1997 and sold the restaurant to the University of Santa Clara for a hefty amount. They then t ore the building down and built a parking lot.

Nora is always helping people out; She helped the Contreras children when they moved to San Jose after their father died. And has since been like a mother to them. They call her whenever they have a problem and want to talk about it. As Larry Contreras puts it, No ra 911.

She has helped out many others to numerous to list.

Child of NORA KAUTZER and GEORGE MENDOZA is:
29. i. CATHERINE ELIZABETH6 MENDOZA, b. August 24, 1950, Phoenix, Az.

19. MARY EUGENIA5 KAUTZER (WILLIAM4, MARTIN3, IGNATZ3 KAUTZA, VALENTINE1) was born July 07, 1942 in Lowell, Cochise Co. Windwood Addition, Az. She married ELIAS (RUDY) CRUZE CRUZ February 02, 1957 in Lordsburgh, New Mexico. He was born April 27, 1936 in Tucson, AZ.

Notes for MARY EUGENIA KAUTZER:
A short story of my life; By Mary Cruz
I was born to William and Doris Kautzer the last of five children. We lived in the Bisbee area until shortly before the death of my father, my mother then moved us to Tucson. Az. Lowell is listed a s my city of birth, but we have always referred to it as Bisbee.

I lived with my mother and two sisters Marie and Nora in a variety of places in Tucson, a nd of course I stayed with my sister Barbara a lot during this time.
My mother bought the house at 926 Nearmont Dr. with the help of my brother Forrest and his wife Norma, when I was eight years old. This was very good for me as I made a lot of friends there. This I consider to be my childhood home, as my new friends and their families became an extension of my family. This was a very good place to be raised; the house was located at the base of "A" mountain. It was a good place to go hiking and then there was the man made lake at the end of the street, good for swimming. Except that I almost drowned there. There was also a horse riding corral close by, which my friends and I went to when we had money. I earned money by doing odd jobs around the neighbor hood and working at Win gs market.
Wings was owned and operated by Wing, who inherited me from the previous owners. He considered me his adopted daughter. The previous owners were a young couple and a baby from Hong Kong and I had become very close to them. W hen they told me they were going back to Hong Kong I told them that I wanted to go with them. But they said that I could not go, as in China white little girl s were not wanted (this broke my heart). They told Wing that he would have to take care of me, and he did, I was very fond of him.

I was baptized in the Catholic Church on August 30, 1948 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Tucson, Az. I had my first Communion on April 10, 1955.

I met my husband Rudy one S unday as a friend and I were walking home from church he was also with a friend . Cruising Congress street, this was the main drag at the time. We were married and moved to California when he lost his job at Douglas.

We had three wonderful sons, Scott, Mark, and last but not least Joel. From them we had eight bea utiful grandchildren, and so far one great granddaughter. They have been a joy to my life and made my life very fulfilling.

For the rest of this story I recorded our married life under Elias Cruz, as after our marriage our story is t he same with a few exceptions.

They are as follows:

After we moved to San Jose, I worked at a variety of jobs. I worked at a doctor's office and thought I would like to be a nurse and was training in this field till I found out wha t being a nurse was really about. I trained to be a PBX operator, but this was not my field either. I even worked at Del Monte packaging for one day. And they decided this was not my field.

After the birth of Joel I stayed at home wi th the kids and did babysitting and housework for neighbors to earn extra income. When Joel was three years old my sister Nora talked me in to going to electronics school with her. After the completion of this course the instructor found me a job in electronics. I worked in this field for 34 years. I worked at many electronics firms and ended up at Lockheed Corp. in Sunnyvale. And retired from there as a supervisor in 1997 after 25 years. We are currently living in the Sacramento area and enjoying retirement.

The best years of my life were the years I spent raising my three sons. It was a little hectic at times, to say the least but it was an enjoyable time for me. I miss those years, particularly t he younger years.

Scott was born to Elias (Rudy & Mary Cruz. He was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson Az. At 1:24 P.M. on a Monday. He weighed 9 Lb's 1 oz. And was 21 ½ inches long. Scott was a good baby and a very obedient son as he was growing up. Scott has always liked food, one of his cutest things he did, as a baby was when we put a finger to his mouth he would open his mouth looking for a bottle. We thought this was very cute. When his brother Mark was born, I would sometimes find him behind a door or hiding some place with Mark's bottle as Mark lay crying in his crib.

When Scott was a year old we moved to California, we stayed at his grandmothers in Gonzales for a while then moved to San Jose, Ca. after about six months. We lived in San Jose for most of his growing up years except for 2 years we spent in San Diego when Scott was 10 and 11. Scott really enjoyed living in San Diego; I guess his favorite part was going to the beach with his father and brothers.

When we moved back to San Jose, we bought a house on Peidmont road. This is where Scott lived till he got married in 1977. Scott graduated from Piedmont High School. He then went to school to become a machinist; he got a job at Food Machinery in San Jose. Then went to night school for about a year so that he would qualify for a job at Lawrence Livermore Lab. He is still working there.

Scott moved to Livermore, Ca. after he got the job at Lawrence, and then bought a house in Tracy, Ca. he has three wonderful sons, Steven, Timothy & Matthew. After his divorce from Cindy, he got custody of his three sons and moved to Modesto, Ca.

He then married Patty and moved to San Leandro, Ca. they bought a house in Salida, Ca. and after their divorce stayed with the house.
