Generation No. 1
1. JOHANN BAPTIST1 KASTEL was born Abt. 1822 in Bavaria, Germany, and died Abt. 1866 in Town Germantown, Washington Co., Wi. He married URSULA KREBBEL August 22, 1847 in St. Boniface, Germantown Township, Washington Co., Wi. Notes for JOHANN BAPTIST KASTEL: There are no church records at St. Boniface for that time period as the records burned. But we have since found that the records that were sent in to the Diocese are available on LDS records. Not all got sent in though before the fire. The county records also burned at the court house in West Bend, so a lot of the early Germantown records were lost. There are no grave stones that we could find, and the Priest told me there were no cemetery records either. There are lots of iron crosses at the cemetery that have lost their name plates. Ursula Krippel Kastel was born about 1821 (census records) in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. She died around 1877 in the Germantown township. John Baptist Kastel bought 20 acres as his original plot of land in the town of Germantown in section 28 (Washington Co.). He did produce farming or truck farming - hauling his fruits and vegetables into town to sell. There is no record of this land purchase found. ( a lot of Court House records were lost through a court house fire also) it is recorded when he sold it to John Heim on 11 Oct. 1853 for $62.00. The description of the land was: The south half of the SW quarter of the SW quarter of Section (28) Township 9 North of Range 20 E containing 20 acres - more or less. Two days later, on 13 Oct. 1853, John Kaestel bought 40 acres of land from Adam Schnell for $270.00 in section (29). They continued to live on this farm until both of their deaths.
Notes for URSULA KREBBEL: After Johann Baptist Kastel's death, John George stayed home with his mother and the two younger children and operated the farm, (1870 census). The 21 November 1879, the estate of John Baptist Kastel was put in Ursula's name, as the deed hadn't been brought up to date until that time. There were only four children listed as heirs, John George, George, Kunigunda, and Elizabeth. We have since found Joachim who had disappeared around that time. The information was found in the following files at the court house in West Bend: Births: 7677,3563,5839,5051,1198,1666,2575, Wood Co. records, Vol. 4, page 286, Gerald Kestell, Marie Kestell, Cynthia Specht, John VonHaden, and Gayle Land, are the places and people who supplied information.

He married (1) JANE DAILY Abt. 1880, daughter of JOHN DAILY and NANCY CONNELL. He married (2) MAGDALENA BRECKHEIMER November 15, 1881 in St. Francis, Milwaukee, Wi., daughter of AMBROSE BRECKHEIMER and ANNA COBLENZ. More on Ambrose Breckheimer Family
Notes for JOHN GEORGE KESTELL: The 26th of August 1880, John Kastell bought the farm from his mother for $1,000. with the personal. In the 1870 census, the property was valued as follows: 20 acres improved land, 20 acres woods valued at $1500. and $50. worth of machinery: 2 milking cows, 2 working oxen, 5 swine, $100. all livestock; 80 bushels wheat, 20 bushels rye, 10 bushels oats, 10 lbs. wool, 25 bushels peas and beans, 60 bushels Irish potatoes. $10.00 orchard products, 300 lbs. butter, 8 tons hay, $55.00 worth of animals slaughtered; $650.00 estimated value of all farm products. There was also a plow, a spring tooth, and a drag included in the machinery. On October 3, 1881, there was a land entry between Nancy Daily and John G. Kestell (as he spells his name now) . According to the indenture, Jane, John George's wife, had bought the farm a few years earlier from her mother, but I guess the papers were not made at the time. Jane had died in March and the estate was being settled. Before the death of Johann Baptist Kastel, John George went by the name of 'George", because of the confusion with his father's name. He kept using the name of 'George until the time of his death, even though he had a brother by the name of George. Eight months after Jane died, John George Kestell married Magdalena Breckheimer, daughter of Ambrose Breckheimer and Anna Maria Koblenz in St. Francis Church in Milwaukee. They were married by Rev. P. Ignatius Ullrich on 15 Nov. 1881. Lena Breckheimer was born 28 June 1855, in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County. She went to Milwaukee to find work as a young girl and that is when she met John George. Magdalena died of Broncho pneumonia following a case of the measles, on the 14 Sept. 1902. She is buried on St. George's Catholic Cemetery in the town of Rhine - just one half mile north from the family homestead. On the 19th Jan. 1882, John George sold the homestead farm to John Conrath Wiseckel with the personal. He must have gotten the farm back, as on the 15 Oct. 1886, GEORGE John Kestell and wife Magdalena sold the farm to John Tiry (George Kestell was married to Ferdinanda Tiry), and on the same day, 15 Oct. 1886, John Tiry sold the homestead farm to Charles Dallmann of Milwaukee County. Charles Dallmann was married to Christina Kaestel, a sister of John George's. John George Kestell and his wife Magdalena and family of seven children, lived on the "Daily" farm in Germantown until 9 June 1894, when they bought the farm in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County, from Ambrose Breckheimer and his wife Anna Maria. The Breckheimers were the parents of Magdalena Kestell. They paid 3500.00 for 110 acres of land and all the buildings. Magdalena and smaller children came to Elkhart Lake by train, and the household furniture was moved up by wagons and teams. John G. Kestell III was ten years old at the time. The Breckheimers moved to a house in Elkhart Lake to retire. Ambrose lived until 2 July 1901, and Anna Maria outlived her daughter by a good many years and passed away 16 Jan. 1917. A few years before John George's death, he was picking apples in the orchard. He used a chair that had posts on the back lean, to climb up into the tree. He slipped and fell from the tree and hit the chair on one of the posts and injured his intestines. He lived for several years, but he was not in good health. He died 31 Jan. 1905. He is buried beside his wife on St. George's Cemetery in the town of Rhine, just one half mile north of the farm Anna and John were the only ones who were over 21 years of age when their father and mother were both dead. Anna had just married the September before her father's death. Francis Williams was appointed guardian of Julius, Charles, Arthur, Margaret and Catherine. Katie was 10 years of age when her mother died and just 13 when her father died. She was the youngest in the family. John had just signed papers with his father on his 21st birthday to take over running of the farm. When Julius was 21, he went into partnership with John. The 5th of October 1905, John George III bought 26 acres from Julia Feldmann and her husband John for $1000.00. Now the farm was 136 acres total. John George III also bought the personal property from his father before his death. He borrowed the money from his grandmother Breckheimer.
Notes for MAGDALENA BRECKHEIMER: John George Kestell and Magdalena with their 7 children, lived on the 'Daily' farm in Germantown until 9 June 1894 when they bought the farm in the town of Rhine, from Ambrose Breckheimer and his wife Anna Maria. They paid $3500.00 for 110 acres of land and all the buildings. Magdalena and smaller children came to Elkhart Lake by train, and the household furniture was moved up by wagons and teams. John G. Kestell III was ten years old at the time. The Ambrose Breckheimers were the parents of Mrs. John George Kestell II. The Breckheimers moved to a house in Elkhart Lake to retire. A few years before John George II death, he was picking apples in the orchard. He used a chair that had posts on the back lean, to climb up into the tree. He slipped and fell from the tree and hit the chair on one of the posts and injured his intestines. He lived for some time , but he was not in good health. He died 21 Jan. 1905. He is buried beside his wife on St. George's Cemetery in the town of Rhine. Anna and her brother John George Kestell III were the only ones who were over 21 years of age when their father and mother were both dead. Francis Williams was appointed guardian of Julius, Charles, Arthur, Margaret and Catherine. Katie, the youngest was 10 years of age when her mother died and just 13 when her father died. John had just signed papers with his father on his 21st birthday to take over running of the farm. When Julius was 21, he went into partnership with John. The children all stayed at home. On the 5th of October 1905, John George III bought 26 acres from Julia Feldmann and her husband John for $1000.00. John George III also bought the personal property from his father before his death. He borrowed the money from his grandmother, Anna Maria Breckheimer. Each one in the family received their inheritance when they became of age. Notes for CHARLES KESTELL: 16. vi. ARTHUR BARTHOLOMEW KESTELL, b. April 06, 1888, Town Germantown, Washington Co., WI; d. November 20, 1945, New Holstein, WI. 5. GEORGE2 KESTELL (JOHANN BAPTIST1 KASTEL) was born October 20, 1855 in Town Germantown, Washington Co., Wi., and died October 19, 1938 in Spokane, Wa. He married FERDINANDA TIRY April 06, 1880 in St. Boniface Catholic, Germantown, Washington Co., daughter of JOHN TIRY and EVA BARTH. More on George KestellNotes for GEORGE KESTELL: The couple had nine children born in the Germantown area. Their last son Michael, was born 18 December 1903 at Marshfield, Wood County, WI. After some of their sons went off to war, and were stationed in the state of Washington, where they thought the weather was much nicer than in Wisconsin, they convinced their parents and most of the family to move to Spokane, WA. George Kestell died 19 Oct. 1938 and his wife Ferdinanda died 8 April 1943, both died in Spokane, WA. Their daughter Helena, who married John Diehm, stayed in Marshfield and raised her family there. (Some of the original dates have been changed to correspond to the Mormon Church records. These are the dates that the St. Anthony Catholic Church records in Allenton, WI., where the George Kestell lived at the time of their children's births.) Notes for GEORGE HENRY KESTELL: 20. iii. ROSALIE KATIE KESTELL, b. December 17, 1885, St. Anthony, Town Addison, Washington, WI. Notes for LEO GEORGE KESTELL: 22. vi. HENRY KESTELL, b. August 03, 1891, Town Addison, Washington, WI; d. January 07, 1958, Woodburn, OR. 6. ELIZABETH2 KESTELL (JOHANN BAPTIST1 KASTEL) was born April 11, 1858 in Town Germantown, Washington, Wi, and died October 13, 1916 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wi. She married JOHN TIRY April 06, 1880 in St. Boniface Catholic, Germantown, Washingto Co., son of JOHN TIRY and EVA BARTH. Notes for JOHN TIRY: John Tiry, the eldest son of Johann and Eva (Barth) was born 20 Nov. 1856 in Schlesingerville (now Slinger), Washington Co., Wi. John worked as a lumberjack in his early days. He and his brother Michael helped to clear some of the land for the farmers near Holy Hill. While working in a sawmill, he had an accident in which one of his hands was severed at the wrist. A hook was used to replace his missing hand. John married Elizabetha Kestell in a double wedding on 6 April 1880, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Goldendale, town of Germantown, Washington Co., Wi. Elizabeth's brother George Kestell, married Ferdinanda Tiry on the same day. Elizabetha was born 1 April 1858 in the Town of Germantown, Washington Co., to Johann Baptist Kastell and Ursula (Krippel, Krebbel, Prevel?) John and Elizabeth purchased farmland on 1 October 1885 from John Bernett and Anna, his wife. The purchased land was the NW1/4of the SE 1/4 of Section 29 of Township 9 and the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section of Township 20 East. The Witnesses were Adam Meunier and John Town of Germantown. Kestell. He paid $2,800.00 for the land. On 15 Oct. 1886, John and Elizabeth Tiry sold to Charles Dallmann, (the sister and brother-in-law of Elizabeth) the NW 1/4 of the SE qtr of the NE 1/4 of Section 29 range 20 containing 100 acres of land. The price was $3,800. Also on 15 Oct. 1886, George Johann Kestell and Lena Kestell, his wife, sold to John Tiry for 800.00 40 acres in the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 29 of Township 9, North of Range 20. The witnesses were Adam Meunier (Notary public) and John G. Kestell. Gayle Land's mother told her, that John had owned the tavern across from St. Lawrence Church in St. Lawrence, Washington Co., Wi. He had a vicious temper and one evening, John and a customer got into an argument. John almost killed the man with his hooked hand. (story from Emma Tiry). It is speculation that this incident prompted John to quit or sell the tavern and move to Milwaukee. However, court records show he lost the tavern to foreclosure. He appears on the Milwaukee City Directory for the first time in 1890. His occupation at that time was saloon and boarding. John had several different jobs during his life. He was granted his liquor license in Milwaukee in 1890. He worked as a saloon keeper for 5 years, then as a contractor, grader, laborer, teamster, and peddler. John died in the House of Correction on 4 August 1910 of heart failure secondary to alcoholism. His death certificate states that he is buried at Union Cemetery in Milwaukee, but the cemetery office does not have a record of his burial. Elizabeth lived for 6 years after John's death. She died 13 October 1916 of a cerebral hemorrhage. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee. There is no further information about Christina, or Lillie. A relative by marriage had thrown away all the information she had on Christina (including pictures), thinking that no one in the family was interested. Little did she know. She married NICHOLAS FRANZEN September 06, 1904 in St. George, Elkhart Lake, Wi. Notes for ANNA KESTELL: Notes for MARY FRANZEN: 14. JOHN GEORGE3 KESTELL (JOHN GEORGE2, JOHANN BAPTIST1 KASTEL) was born January 12, 1884 in Town Germantown, Washington Co., Wi., and died December 17, 1918 in Town Rhine, Sheboygan Co., Wi. He married ELIZABETH NETZER June 09, 1908 in Holy Trinity, School Hill, Manitowoc Co., Wi., daughter of JOHN NETZER and MARGARET BINVERSIE. Notes for JOHN GEORGE KESTELL: Elizabeth was born 23 August 1883 in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, WI., and died 24 May 1982 in the town of Centerville, Manitowoc Co. She was three months short of her 99th birthday. Before John's death, he had put an important addition on the house - a pantry and a bathroom. In order to have running water, one had to hand pump water to a tank above the kitchen. This water circulated through a water front on the kitchen range and heated it for the bathroom. When we moved to Sheboygan, we didn't even have a bathroom in our house there. We had a toilet in the basement with a tank up high with a long chain on it which you had to pull to flush the toilet. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth could not go on farming with four small children to support and raise - the oldest was seven and the youngest was two, so she rented the farm to Louis Dessloch and his family and sold the personal to him. The farm was rented to the Dessloch family for five years. In the meantime, Elizabeth and her four children moved to Sheboygan where Elizabeth worked part time at Jungs Department Store, and also at H.C. Prange. (Cont'd under more about Elizabeth) Notes for ELIZABETH NETZER: The first year that we were back to the farm, Elizabeth had the farm run by a neighbor, Fred Toll, on shares. Then four cows were purchased from Sixel's near Cleveland. In those days, there were not any trucks to haul them, or it was not the practice, so we drove them from Cleveland to Elkhart Lake. There were at least two or three cars that would pick up us kids to get ahead of the cows while someone else would drive them along. Of course, in those days, there were good fences along the roads. Someone would have to be ahead to keep the cows from going into an open gate or turning a corner or going into a driveway. Then a new car was purchased and the big expense of getting personal property, horses etc. that were very necessary to running the farm. The boys would have to go out and do chores before they went to school, as the hired man left when the field work was finished until spring's work began. If wood had to be made, the hired man was there a few weeks longer. The year that Lester was 16, and Melroy was 14, they did all the farm work with the very good guidance of their mother. We all enjoyed our field trips to check on the crops. We were only back on the farm about four years when the stock market crash came in 1929 We had just had our farm wired for Electricity as the Electric Power came past our place in 1929. Mom had bought a new radio, and also an electric stove, before things got really bad.

Frank and Catherine met through the Reisch's and Dexheimer's who were good friends. They had the two girls: Helen and Virginia. When Virginia was a few months old, Catherine was in need of an operation. When the doctors operated, they left some gause or instrument inside of her and she died of an infection. The two girls were raised by an uncle an aunt of theirs, Michael and Anna Meyer, who had no children of their own. Catherine died 16 Nov. 1921, and is buried on St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Slinger, WI. Frank remarried later on and died 7 Oct. 1973. More About FRANK MEYER: 19. JOHN GEORGE3 KESTELL (GEORGE2, JOHANN BAPTIST1 KASTEL) was born April 07, 1882 in St. Lawrence, Allenton, Washington, WI, and died in Spokane, Spokane, WA. He married KATE FEISS October 23, 1907 in Marshfield, Wood, WI. Notes for JOHN GEORGE KESTELL: Their first three years, sales were small in figures, but big in the vision they had for the future. The business grew steady, but not phenomenal. On January 10th, 1910, the Michael Steinmetz business was taken over and a company was then formed which was called Kestel Bros. Company, which was incorporated under the laws of the State of Wisconsin. The company was capitalized at $25,000.00. The stockholders on above date were: C. E. Blodgett, John a Kestel, George J. Kestel, and J. M. Berg. The business during the first year under the new corporation increased 100%. On Feb. 1st, 1913, J. A. Kestel secured an option on Mr. C. E. Blodgett's stock and on March 1st, 1913, turned over this stock to 39 people in this city and rural districts with the guarantee of 6% on their investment and 5% on their purchases. It was at this time that the other brothers, Harry W. Kestel, Joseph J. Kestel, Math. J. Kestel and Peter J. Kestel, as also Math. P. Michaels, Joseph Seidl and Louis Rembs became stockholders of Kestel Bros. Co. (This was taken in part from a brochure named "History of Kestel Bros. Company". Sometime in the later 20's or early 30's the Company was sold and most of the Kestell's moved from the Marshfield area to the State of Washington, including their parents, the George Kestell & Ferdinanda Tiry, or Mr. & Mrs. George Kestell.) 20.
