Michael Coup enlisted in the War Of The Rebellion on Sept. 14,1861 as a private in Co. A 9th. Regiment of PA Cavalry Volunteers under the command of Capt. William M. Potter. He reenlisted Jan.1,1864.
He was admitted to the service hospital quite often for various ailments during his enlistments. The Surgeon Generals Office reported that Pvt. Michael Coup, Co. A 9th Pa.Cavalry was treated at Post Hospital Convalescent Barracks, Louisville Ky., for various ailments April 13 to 26 1863, May 1 and 2 1863, May 4 and 5 1863, and May 11 1863.
Henry Haverstick and John Barrett were companions of Michael and in July of 1862 he was put on duty and remained all night without relief. That he came down with a cold that settled in his chest and that ever after he complained of his lungs bothering him.
He was discharged July 18,1865 at Lexington N.C. He was brought to his home in Duncannon from Harrisburg by conveyance as he could not walk. For one year he was unable to work and after that only part time. Michael died Dec. 8,1872 from hemorrhaging of the lungs. For his years in the service his wife Anna received 8.00 dollars a month and 2.00 dollars for each of their three children.
