Sixth Generation

185. Benjamin Speer POINDEXTER96,135 was born on 25 November 1835 in Monroe County, Kentucky.96 He died on 7 November 1899 at the age of 63 in McMilland, Oklahoma.96

Benjamin moved to Grayson Co TX about 1854, following his father. He resided in Collin Co TX in 1880. He served as a Private in Co D, 1st Battalion, of the TX Sharp Shooters in the Civil War. He also served in the Texas Rangers and was a U.S. Deputy Marshall. He married (1) his cousin Rebecca Flynn Poindexter who died 17 Sep 1866. They had no children. He married (2) Amanda Frances Cartwright on 1 Nov 1868 in Grayson Co TX and they had 11 children.

In September of 1901, Amanda F. Poindexter stated her husband had died two years previously at the age of 64 and that they were married 1868, in Grayson Co, TX.
The Poindexter book gives the place of his death as "McMilland" Oklahoma. There is no such place, but there is a McMillan, OK in Marshall County.

Benjamin Speer Poindexter's widow and children registered in the Five Civilized Tribes enrollment in 1896.
An entire group of descendants of both Benjamin and brother Arch and their half siblings applied through the Mississippi Choctaw enrollment. Both Benjamin & Archibald or their descendants, gave their mother as Mary P. Poindexter, not Sarah Gist. They claimed their Indian relationship through Rebecca Flynn, their grandmother. Not only was she not found on any of the Choctaw roles [she certainly was not even Indian] but they could not prove she had ever lived in Mississippi or Alabama [and she never had].
