An Amusing History of American Medicine

...Dr. William Wishard, a small-town practitioner in central Indiana, was once called to see a child who had an extensive skin infection on her face. The mother had covered here daughter's face with goose grease. Dr. Wishard advised removing the grease promptly; it encouraged the spread of infection. Severe scarring of the child's face might result. But goose grease was a widely used and highly regarded folk remedy for skin disorders, and the mother declined to remove it.
Dr. Wishard's sense of humor dissolved the impasse smoothly. He asked if the grease came from a goose or from a gander. As he expected, the mother did not know. Then he asked if she knew the day of the month on which the bird had been killed. Of course, she did not. The doctor explained that without certainty on these two important points, it was unlikely that the goose grease was effective, and the mother, embarassed by her apparent lack of knowledge, agreed to remove the grease immediately. Careful cleansing of the child's face soon brought evidence of healing.

William & Harriet were members of the Greenwood Presbyterian Church, joining in 1843. He was Sunday School Superintendent for 12 years. They had their portraits painted in 1841 by William Unthank of Richmond - their son Dr. W. N. Wishard of Indianapolis gave the portraits to the church. (Appeared in "Nostalgia News", Vol 5, No. 3, June 1996, p.4)

1850 Census in Johnson Co IN. William, Physician, and Harriet with daughter Mary E. who at the time was the only surviving child; they had lost the first three. Mary died in 1851.

William H. Henry was the assignee of numerous veteran soldiers' land warrants, located in Iowa from 1854-1861. Some were from the War of 1812 - soldiers, widows, and in one case minor children; some from the Black Hawk War - including one assigned to him from his father who was a Captain in that war; two of the warrants stated the soldier fought in the North East frontier disturbances and were from Maine. Since he never lived in Iowa, I presume these were bought on speculation. Would be interesting to see the deeds from some of the counties - the lands were located in Audubon, Benton, Black Hawk, Carroll, Cerro Gordo, and Montgomery Counties in Iowa. The patents for the warrants are on the Bureau of Land Management, Government Records Office, website.
