Second Generation

11. Samuel WARD33 was born about 1648 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.17 He died on 8 January 1692/3 at the age of 45 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut.28

Samuel was a Sergeant of the Fairfield Trainband and a Deputy in Fairfield.

Some have suggested his first wife was named Alice, but this is incorrect. Her given name is unknown. She was a daughter of Richard Ogden.

Samuel married second Hannah, widow of Jonathan Nichols of Stratford. She was a daughter of Mr. Anthony Howkins. Hannah married (3) to John Judson of Woodbury; she died in Woodbury on 23 Jul 1698. Her will was made the day before her death and named three Nichols children and a daughter Hannah Ward.

The date of the death shown here is the date of his estate inventory. Administration was granted the widow Hannah and son Edmund Ward. Allowance was made to the widow, 29 Mar 1692/3, for bringing up Sgt. Ward's youngest child and the other three children of her former husband Jonathan Nichols; mention was made of the eldest son, the other five sons, and one daughter. 12 Apr 1694, Edmund Ward had removed out of the Colony and Nathaniel Burr and Eliphalet Hill as overseers were instructed to proceed with the administration.

That Samuel Ward had six sons is evident from the above record. The Warde book omitted a son Andrew.

From "Additions and Corrections to The Families of Old Fairfield", supplement to American Genealogist, Oct 1943.
Andrew Ward was omitted from the Warde book, but the settlement of his father's estate plainly states there were six sons - the eldest Edmund and five others. The Inventory of this Andrew's estate was taken 25 Feb 1706/7 and distribution ordered to his brothers - Edmund, Samuel, William, John and Moses.

From "Additions and Corrections to The Families of Old Fairfield", supplement to American Genealogist, Oct 1943.
Samuel is given a death date of 1706 in the Warde book but that is an error. His brother Andrew is the one who died that year. When Andrew's estate was distributed it was ordered to his brethren Edmund, Samuel, William, John and Moses. Andrew's estate inventory was taken 25 Feb 1706/7.

As Samuel Ward, late of Fairfield, Samuel bought land in Eastchester on 6 Mar 1696/7. Samuel was in the Eastchester Census in 1698 with Hannah, probably his wife, and Abigail, probably a daughter. He witnessed a will there in 1711 and was Justice of the Peace at various times from 1715 to 1727. He moved to Baltimore, MD where is will was dated 1 Sep 1731 and proved on 5 Nov of the same year.
