Claim #5076; Israel Walters filed for reimbursement of property - foods, grain, and a black mare age 7, taken by Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Union soldiers came to his house and farm and spent two nights there - they took bacon, corn, etc. and the total claim was for $327 but only $54 was allowed and paid. Israel made claim 12 Aug 1873 and stated his age as 58 years. His address was Powder Springs Gap, Grainger Co TN. Israel stated that his son Lemuel was conscripted into the rebel Army but he later deserted and joined the 9th TN Cavalry of the Federal Army. Lemuel Walters was killed during the capture of Rebel Gen. Morgan at Bull's Gap, TN. Witnesses to the claim of Israel Walters were daughters Mincy [Missy] and Hannah Walters.
