Christopher's occupation is that of Lawyer. 1870, Henry Co, Martinsville Township. Listed as age 52. a Lawyer. Mary A., age 36, Keeping House. Sterling age 14, Nancy 12, John 10, Jane 6, Kate 4 and Frank 2. [Sterling was only age 1 in 1860 so he has aged a couple of extra years; Nancy was not listed in 1860, perhaps born that year after the census cut-off date. Also living in the household were: 11 year old Martha Barber listed as domestic servant; Robert Hairson, a 24 year old Black man doing Farm labour, Wesley Thomas, age 18 and Aron Thomas age 13, both mulattos doing Farm labor. Faith Thomas, age 8, was listed after these others. The 1880 census reveals she was one of the children, apparently almost forgotten. Biographical Dictionary of the United States Congress: THOMAS, Christopher Yancy, (1818 - 1879) THOMAS, Christopher Yancy, a Representative from Virginia; born in Pittsylvania County, Va., March 24, 1818; attended the common schools, and was graduated from a private academy in 1838; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice in Martinsville, Henry County, Va.; served in the State senate 1860-1864; member of the commission to settle the boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina; treasurer of Henry County; prosecuting attorney for Henry County; member of the State constitutional convention in 1868; elected to the State house of delegates in 1869; successfully contested as a Republican the election of Alexander M. Davis to the Forty-third Congress and served from March 5, 1874, to March 3, 1875; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress; resumed the practice of law; died in Martinsville, Va., February 11, 1879; interment in the family cemetery at Leatherwood, Henry County, Va. 43rd U.S.Congress met in Washington, DC from March 4 to March 3, 1875, during the first two years of the second administration of U. Starling in 1913. Said to be the eldest son. Prepared for the practice of law but seems not to have been a lawyer. Married Elizabeth Sheffield, daughter of William Sheffield and had two daughters, Mary Reamy and Katherine, and a son Archie. In 1880, "Sturling" was listed as a Journalist.
