Mary Clark Holderness, 89, an amateur artist who in the 1970s designed a large stained-glass window for Children's Hospital, died Aug 22 of stroke complications at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.
She had lived in the Washington area since the 1950s and in Chevy Chase since 1958.
Mrs. Holderness, a native of Elizabethtown, NC attended Salem College in North Carolina.
She had a home studio and produced sculptures, watercolors and portraits into the 1990s.
The window at the hospital, the focal point of its children's chapel, was commissioned by fundraiser John Sharon and his wife, Frances. Mrs. Holderness realized the family theme working with the artisan John P. F. Coleman.
She was a member of Chevy Chase Club and the Friends of Stratford.
Her husband, retired Rear Adm. George A. Holderness Jr. whom she married in 1937, died in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Jan Holderness of Washington; and a son, George III, of Bethesda.
