Third Generation

14. [questionable] Hezekiah AVERY1,2 was born on 14 September 1809 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.2 He died in 1844 at the age of 35 in Exeter, Scott County, Illinois.2

There is a question about whether or not Hezekiah was a son of Daniel & Sarah Sargent. He was not listed as one of their ten children in a county history book article about grandson Philander Avery. Hezekiah lived in Bradford Co, PA with the family of his wife, Henrietta Nelson. His family was in Ohio at the time he would have married her - either he returned in his late teens to Bradford, or was never part of Daniel & Sarah's family.

Strangely enough there was another older Hezekiah Avery who lived in Bradford Co. He served in the War of 1812 as a Private and could not have been the same person. He is listed as being from Troy, which was the area where Ebenezer Avery and family lived. Ebenezer may have been Daniel Avery's brother.

Hezekiah is said to have been killed in the Morman uprising at Nauvoo, which is apparently not true as researchers among his descendants report that he died of cholera in Exeter, Scott Co, Illinois, and was buried in a mass grave with other victims. He died in 1844 which was the same year as the tragedy at Nauvoo so wrong assumptions have been made. By 1850, Henrietta was head of her household in Utah Territory. The last child born was John Nelson Avery, born 2 May 1844.

[Questionable] Hezekiah AVERY and Henrietta NELSON were married.19 Henrietta NELSON19,20,21 was born on 4 August 1812 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.19 She died on 2 December 1880 at the age of 68 in Kanosh, Millard County, Utah.19

Henrietta 's parents were William Oliver Nelson and Elizabeth Morris.

In 1850 Henrietta was in Great Salt Lake in the Utah Territory Census, p.103b. 48 years old, b. in PA. This would seem to indicate a birth year of 1802 rather than 1812, but I think this is an error and she should have been 38. Noah age 13 was also born in PA. Mary age 9 and John age 6, both born in IL. Daughter Nancy was married and living with her in-laws.

Found in 1880 in Kanosh, Millard Co, Utah. Living alone but two houses from daughter Rosannah and son Noah. She was 67, b. in PA. However, her name was Henrietta Williams so she had remarried. Her parents were given as born in Massachusetts.

[questionable] Hezekiah AVERY and Henrietta NELSON had the following children:

Nancy Mariah AVERY19,22 was born on 25 December 1830 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.19 She died on 25 January 1914 at the age of 83 in Rockland, Power County, Idaho.19

Nancy married Joseph Henry Byington on 25 Dec 1849 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 1850 Nancy was living with her in-laws in Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory. Hyram Byington, age 50, Stone cutter, b. in Connectict; Sarah age 42 b. in NH, Joseph age 22 b. in Ohio, Nancy age 20 b. PA; Susan age 11 b. IL and an infant Nancy, age 5 months. She is shown as born "Des" - was this an abbreviation for born in the desert?

1880 Census, the Byingtons were living in Oxford, Oneida Co, Idaho. Hopefully this was a Morman community because Joseph had taken two wives and had numerous children by both. Joseph was age 51, a farmer, born in Ohio; his father b. VA, mother b. OH. Nancy M. Byington was age 50, b. PA. Her children would seem to be: Hyrum E., age 20, John H. age 16, Jeanette, age 14, Ira age 9, Lillie age 8, and William age 7. The second wife was Hannah, age 42, b. in England. Her children were: James age 15, Maria age 14, Charles age 12, Martha age 10, Susan age 5, Henry age 2, and Parley age 3 months. All the children except the three youngest by Hannah were born in Utah. Susan's birth in Idaho at age age 5 would indicate the family moved to Idaho about 1874 or so. There was also a child William Stowe, age 12, born in Utah and listed as a son. Unless Stowe was a middle name, I have no idea where he might fit into this family.

The database is comprised of a 50-volume list created by Susan Black about people who were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1830 to 1848 and who lived in the United States, Canada or Great Britain. The database was compiled using more than 300 primary and secondary sources on early Latter-day Saints, but it does not necessarily include every member of the Church who lived during the time period.

ii.

James Morris David AVERY was born on 29 November 1832 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.19,20

James may have died as a child. He's not with his mother in 1850 in Utah, nor in a household of his own.

iii.

Rosanna Vanclate\Valverda AVERY20,21 was born on 24 May 1834 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.19 She died in Kanosh, Millard County, Utah.19

Year of death given as 1880; burial as 1892. [An obvious error.]

Rosanna not found in the 1850 census with her family - she would have been about 16. Perhaps she had already married.

In 1880, Rosannah V. Shaw lived next to Noah Avery. Age 46, b. in PA Living with her was James L. Boyington, her son, age 15 and born in Utah; he was a sheepherder. She is the right age to be Rosanna. However, Databases online give Rosanna Avery different husband - 1st a John Beal and 2nd James William Lemmon.

iv.

Sally AVERY was born on 4 June 1837 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.19,20

Sally probably died as a child. Not in the 1850 Census when she would have been about 13/14.

Noah Summers Buckley AVERY21 was born on 14 December 1838 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.19,20 He died on 11 January 1912 at the age of 73 in Kanosh, Millard County, Utah.19

1880 Census. Noah, age 49, born in PA. [Noah was about 42, possibly his age transcribed wrong] His wife was Susan M. age 28, b. In Illinois. Susan had been married previously as two stepdaughters lived in the home - Catherine N. Woolsey age 12 and Lenora Woolsey age 7, both girls born in Utah. Then there were two Avery children - Noah O. age 4 and Aaron A age 6 months.

There is a record of a marriage from Noah S. B. Avery, age 53 to Susan M. Miles, age 40 in Kanosh, Sanpete County Utah. Date of marriage 8 Jun 1892. It's obvious this is the correct people, was there some reason government authorities did not recognize Morman marriages at this time?
