Tenth Generation

221. Maj. John POINDEXTER135 was born on 12 May 1793.135 He died on 21 January 1877 at the age of 83 in Christian County, Kentucky.135

John served in the War of 1812 as a Lt. in the 8th Regt of the VA militia.

On 17 Aug 1831, John Poindexter appeared in Christian Co Court that he had removed to KY with the intention to become a citizen and had brought no slaves.

1840 Census, Christian Co KY.
1m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 10-15, and 1m age 40-50 [John]. 2f under 5, 1f 10-15, and 1f age 40-50 [Elizabeth]

Not all the children of John & Elizabeth are accounted for. One biographical article re the husband of youngest daughter Ritchie suggests there were as many as eleven children. Some are listed in the Poindexter book, others I have found in censuses. The cemetery records indicate other children. There was certainly a younger John - John S. Poindexter - in 1850 he was age 25, b. VA, a physician, living with the Withers family; by 1860 he was married to Anna and had children.

1850 Census, Christian Co KY
John was 57, b. VA, Elizabeth, 54, b. VA. Mary L, 31 b. VA, Ella 15 b. KY, Sally O. 11 b. KY, Virginia R. age 8, b. KY and William age 11, b. TN. William may not have been a child of John & Elizabeth since he was listed last.

1860 Census, Christian Co KY
John was now age 64, Betsy 64, Mary L. 42, Sally 22, and Richie 18. Richie was marked first as a male, but marked over as "f" - this is Virginia R.

1870 Census, Christian Co KY
John 77, Elizabeth 74, and Mary L marked as age 4 [obviously an error]

Cemetery records from Flat Lick show a P. B. Poindexter 1830-1863, Sallie O. Poindexter 1838-1863. John 1793-1877 and Elizabeth 1796-1877 on one stone. J. W. Poindexter 1822-1877 and M. L. Poindexter 1818-1900 [This is likely Mary L.]
