48. Rachel WILLIAMS4,12,23,40 was born on 10 September 1776 in Surry County, North Carolina.40

A small self-published book by Ben. F. Dixon in San Diego, 1960, titled The Adamson Source Book contains material about Rachel that is erroneous. The book has her married to a Byrd D. Adamson, supposedly a son of a Welchman Alexander Adamson, who had lived in Dublin. Byrd & his brothers Jesse, Enos, John & Simon, said to have immigrated from Ireland. Unfortunately Jesse, Enos, John & Simon Adamson are all sons of Simon Adamson Sr and were all born in North Carolina. There are other errors in the book. The marriage record of Rachel Williams to Thomas Adamson, 6 Aug 1796, in Jefferson Co TN is the first on record in that county. Perhaps Thomas had the nickname "Byrd". The book does repeat several times that no records of a Byrd Adamson could be found - not surprising if his name was Thomas.
The same information was picked up by Barber in her manuscript and she states Rachel married Byrd D. Adamson.
The book Pike Family History handles the problem by having Rachel married twice - to Thomas Adamson and then to Byrd D. Adamson. This book also states erroneously that Thomas Adamson was born in Dublin, Ireland. The spacing of Rachel's children leaves no gaps that could account for a time as a widow.

Rachel married "out of unity" in the Quaker records and her first child was born 6 months later.

Moved with her family to Jefferson Co TN before 1797. She was a member of Lost Creek Quaker Meeting near Newmarket when it was established. She was dismissed for marrying out of unity but later condemned her marriage to an infidel. 29 Aug 1812 she requested and received full membership for her nine children. Thomas is not mentioned; was she a widow by that date? On 25 Aug 1817, Rachel was issued a certificate of transfer to the Lick Creek Meeting IN. She is in the 1820 & 1830 Censuses in Lawrence Co IN. In 1820 she was living near Isaac Williams, her brother, and William Cox, husband of daughter Zibeah.

1820: 2m -10, 1m 16-18, 1m 16-26 [probably same boy]. 1f -10, 1f 10-16, 1f 26-45.

Rachel WILLIAMS and Thomas ADAMSON were married on 6 August 1796 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.37,38,40,41 Thomas ADAMSON40, son of SIMON ADAMSON and ?Mary T. [ADAMSON], was born about 1775 in Orange County, North Carolina.37 He died before September 1812 at the age of 37 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.37,38

Thomas may have been called Byrd Adamson. Some researchers have solved the question of his name by simply giving him two given names as "Thomas Byrd". He is said to have lived in Surry Co NC before moving to Jefferson Co TN. He is believed to be a son of Simon Adamson, and brother to Jonathan,

The oldest child of Thomas & Rachel was only about 15 when Thomas wrote his will. He appointed two of his brothers as executors and two of the other brothers witnessed the will. Probably all five were living in Jefferson Co TN at the time.

Rachel, along with her children, settled in Lawrence Co IN in 1817 as pioneer settlers.

The birthdates of the children are from a Bible record found in a grandson's Bible. Blanch (Cox) Baker found it in the bible of her father - Henry Cox, son of Alec Cox and Zibeah Adamson.

Rachel WILLIAMS and Thomas ADAMSON had the following children:

Note: this does not explain George W., age 3 months, and Lucinda, age 6, in the 1850 census - were they a nephew & niece rather than children of Alexander & Ziba?]

Simon Cox, brother of Alexander married a Rachel Adamson. I'm not sure which Rachel this was.
