The Mabry book states that Mary Frances died in Pulaski Co VA in 1915. "Blue Ridge Heritage" states that she died 21 Dec 1929 and is buried Belmont Cemetery near Christiansburg in Montgomery Co VA. FindAGrave has the same date as the book, and a photo of her grave marker.

Mary Frances MABRY and John BRANSCOME were married on 16 June 1859.118 John BRANSCOME49,133, son of Harbert BRANSCOME and Nancy DALTON, was born in 1842 in Carroll County, Virginia.49,134 He died on 7 January 1864 at the age of 22 in Rock Island, Illinois.134

The family is in Carroll Co VA in 1850. Married within the year, with a two-month-old son.

John and his older brothers, Frank, Robert, and Isaaac all were recruited on 16 Sep 1861 and sworn into the Confederacy by George H. Turman, father-in-law of Isaac. They were part of the 54th VA Infantry, Isaac and John in Company G. After the Battle of Chattanooga, John Branscome was carried the company's muster roll as missing in action. "Missing in fight at Missionary Ridge, Nov 25, 1863" He had, in fact, been taken prisoner and was sent from Nashville to Louisville KY and then to Rock Island prison in Illinois where he was received 8 Dec 1863. He contracted typhoid in prison and died 7 Jan 1864. He is buried in the cemetery at Rock Island - grave 129, South of Prison Barracks. John's record is on Fold3 and filed with the War Department as John "Branscomb" - his name spelled as Branscome, Branscom, Bransom in the file.

BRANSCOME, JOHN, Pvt., Co. G, 54th VA, d. 7 Jan 1864 at Rock Island, IL, of typhoid fever, (prisoner of war), b. c1843, son of Harbert and Nancy.

John's brother Robert also died during the war - his last record was a pay voucher 28 Feb 1862. He was listed as a Waggonier for the company from 8 Nov 1861.

Franklin Pierce BRANSCOME133 was born on 14 March 1860 in Carroll County, Virginia.49,135 He died on 5 January 1922 at the age of 61 in Carroll County, Virginia.135

Franklin was listed as two months old in the 1860 census.

Pierce married Orlena E. Marshall, daughter of Daniel Marshall, 5 Oct 1881. She was born 20 Apr 1864 in Carroll Co VA and died in that county 5 Jul 1946.. They had nine children.

A teacher from Nov. 1881 until March 1893, while teaching he studied surveying and became a Court surveyor a position he held for 8 years. He became an ordained Primitive Baptist minister.
In January 1897 he Founded and Edited the Primitive Baptist Periodical "Messenger of Truth" published in Laurel Fork, Va., Was Assistant Clerk of the New River Primitive Baptist Association.
Franklin Pierce Branscome was known to be a Zealous Advocate of the simplicity of Bible doctrine and for his style of No Jesting and No Foolishness in the pulpit.

He is buried Laurel Fork Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Carroll Co, VA. After his death, the widow married Marshall Price Webb, 1930.



Robert Lee BRANSCOME133,134,136 was born on 7 December 1863 in Carroll County, Virginia.136 He died on 7 June 1927 at the age of 63 in Roanoke, Virginia.134

Robert married [1] 2 Feb 1882 to Elizabeth Alice Hylton, daughter of James Madison Hylton & Mahala Agnes Burnett. They were ancestors of Dorothy Burnett Peterson who wrote BLUE RIDGE HERITAGE. Married [2]. to Nancy Jane Turner, 1889.
Robert was a passenger conductor for the N&W Railway.

Mary Frances MABRY and Isham SPENCE were married on 25 December 1866 in Carroll County, Virginia.118,137 Isham SPENCE137, son of Eli SPENCE and Martha Ellen JACKSON, was born on 19 April 1847 in Carroll County, Virginia.137,138 He served in the military in 1864–1865 at Co F, 4th VA Reserves in Civil War. He died on 21 January 1933 at the age of 85. Isham was buried in Belmont Cemetery, Belmont, Montgomery County, Virginia.

Isham enlisted in Co F, 4th VA Reserves on 16 May 1864 at Hillsville, VA. He was transferred to Co K on 24 Nov in Dublin VA and was still on the company records 27 Jan 1865.

The family is on the 1880 census in Carroll Co, Laurel Fork District, but moved to Pulaski County, near Hiwassee sometime soon after that.

Isham & Mary lived with their children in their old age. When Mary died in 1929 they were living with their daughter Samantha and her husband John T. Linkous, near Cambria, Montgomery Co, VA. Later Isham lived with his daughter Naomi and son-in-law Jasper Nunn. Both are interred in the Linkous plot at Belmont Christian Church Cemetery in Montgomery Co VA.

The 1930 Census tells a bit different story. Living in Hiwassee, Pulaski Co, VA on Lead Mine Rd.

Naomi "Oma" SPENCE130,137 was born in 1869 in Carroll County, Virginia.136,138 She died on 1 July 1951 at the age of 82.137 Oma married Jasper Nunn on 9 Apr 1890. They lived on the Isham Spence farm in Pulaski Co, later buying it.



Lucy Ann SPENCE was born on 9 August 1872 in Carroll County, Virginia.136,138 She died in September 1885 at the age of 13 in Carroll County, Virginia.104 Recorded in the Carroll Co Deaths - Lucy died of scarlet fever. Parents: Isham & M. F. Spence.



Isham F. SPENCE130,137 was born on 12 August 1874 in Carroll County, Virginia.136,137,138 Isham married Mattie Clark 21 Jan 1897, in Surry Co NC. They moved to Minnesota.



Mary Samantha SPENCE137 was born on 15 July 1877 in Carroll County, Virginia.136,137,138 She died on 11 May 1946 at the age of 68 in Montgomery County, Virginia.137

Samantha married John Thomas Linkous of Montgomery Co VA. They are buried at the Belmont Christian Church Cemetery near Cambria, Montogmery Co.



Joseph Taylor SPENCE137 was born on 28 July 1880.137 He died on 15 May 1968 at the age of 87 in Pulaski County, Virginia.137

Joseph married (2) to Carrie Musick Arrington on 4 Nov 1920. She was the widow of Grover Cleveland Arington.
