Joshua served in the Civil War. Capt, Co F, 5th VA Reserves. Joshua sold the land inherited by himself and his brother Jesse Lee to their brother-in-law, Christopher Turman in 1867 and probably took his family to Illinois to join his sister Amelia Thompson, brother Jesse, and Susan's brothers Madison, Addison, and Solomon, as well as some of sister Irenia Mabry Cox's children. Joshua and Susan are buried in Holland Cemetery in Hancock Co. His obituary stated he was the father of five, two of them having died before he did.

Joshua Patrick C. MAYBERRY and Susan Ellen HELMS were married on 27 November 1867 in Carroll County, Virginia.118 Susan Ellen HELMS, daughter of Hamilton HELMS and Arena SLUSHER, was born on 23 October 1842 in Carroll County, Virginia.117,132 She died on 25 January 1907 at the age of 64 in Hancock County, Illinois.117
Susan was the daughter of Hamilton J. Helms.
