"John L. Jones, farmer, Section 31, was born in Cumberland Co, KY, August 25, 1820, and was a son of Claven [sic] Jones and Elizabeth (Giles) Jones of New Jersey [???]
John L. was educated in the common schools of Iowa and Missouri, his father having moved from Kentucky [1822] when the son was two years old, and settled in Illinois. He remained there twelve years, then went to Iowa [1834]. Five years afterward they came to Linn Co0unty, MO [1839], where his father died in 1845.
Mr. Jones resided in Linn County, on a farm, until 1867, when he came to Cass County, and has since farmed here.
He married Miss Susie Brown, a native of Virginia, in 1842. They had five children: Elizabeth, Richard, William, Andrew, and John.
Mrs. Jones died September 2, 1877. Mr. Jones went to California in 1849, and was shipwrecked on an island for 37 days on his way home. He was a member of the Baptist church."

John Longden JONES and Susanna BROWN were married in 1842.1 Susanna BROWN, daughter of Thomas BROWN, was born on 5 April 1828 in Virginia.2 She died on 2 September 1875 at the age of 47 in Cass County, Missouri.

Descendant of this line states that she was the daughter of Thomas A. & Elizabeth J. Brown.

Date of Death from HISTORY OF CASS CO MO; Biographical section, Austin Twp p.732 - said to be 2 Oct 1877 - but her grave marker has 1875.

Susanna is buried Austin Cemetery, Austin, Cass Co, MO. Dates on the stone are: Born 5 Apr 1828, died 2 Oct 1875.

Elizabeth JONES9 was born on 20 November 1846 in Linn County, Missouri.2 She died on 26 January 1930 at the age of 83 in Grant County, Oregon.9

Her age was 19 in 1870, or born 1851. Other ages were "off" in this Census.

According to records of Marlene Jones, Elizabeth married Andrew J. Loften in 1885.

Elizabeth is buried in Fox Valley Cemetery, Grant Co, Oregon.

Mary J. JONES was born in 1848 in Missouri.2 She died before 1860 at the age of 12.2

Not listed in 1860 Census. Probably died young.

Richard JONES was born on 18 January 1853 in Missouri.2,9 He died on 31 July 1928 at the age of 75 in Tangent, Linn County, Oregon.9

Richard married Verlinda Scruggs Dickey on 22 Feb 1880.

William Abraham "Abe" JONES was born on 24 November 1854 in Missouri.2,9 He died on 5 April 1920 at the age of 65 in Monument, Grant County, Oregon.9

William Jones never married. He is buried Monument Cemetery, Grant Co, OR. In both 1900 and 1910 censues, he and his father are living with Andrew in Grant Co, Oregon.

Andrew Jackson "Jack" JONES9 was born on 9 May 1856 in Missouri.2,9 He died on 3 June 1932 at the age of 76 in Monument, Grant County, Oregon.9

Andrew married Mollie Ray Dickey in 1881. He is buried with Mollie, Monument Cemetery, Grant Co, OR.

John "Johnny" JONES was born in July 1859 in Missouri.2,9 He died in July 1883 at the age of 24 in Idaho.

Youngest child of John L. Jones and Susanna "Susie" (Brown) Jones; in the 1870 census in Austin, Cass County, Missouri and listed as "Insane" and in the 1880 census in Austin, Cass County, Missouri he is listed as "Idiotic". While traveling on a wagon train, Johny/Johnny died of "Flux" at Dead Man(s) Flat in Idaho per a letter dated 20 Oct 1883 written by Mollie Ray Dickey Jones to her mother in Missouri. He was buried somewhere near there. John/Johnny was Mollie Ray Dickey Jones's brother-in-law.

Excerpt from Mollie Ray Dickey Jones' letter of 20 Oct 1883 to her mother in Missouri:
"well ma i suppose you heard that Johny Jones was dead. he died with the flux at dead mans flat in idaho. the alkali water give it to him. we was over a hunderd miles from any town and they could not get any cofin and they just had to buy lumber and make a box fore him and as it hapened there was twenty wagons of all of us there that night and there was a preacher there and he preached his funerall. he was sick just two weeks and ________ pretty bad off with it to. i thought that ______ would not get well but she is better now than she has been for a long time. none of the rest of us had it but Jack and Abe. they did not have it bad." (Mollie Jones was John Jones' sister-in-law and Jack and Abe were John Jones' brothers)
