Order Book #12, Feb 1773, Goochland. Suit of Carter & Trent against James Johnson [Likinghole].

In 1784, James Johnson was on the Personal Property Tax List in District 4, near Lickinghole Creek. In 1787, the only James listed in the Reconstructed Census in the west end of the County was "James (old)". A James appeared in the tax lists of 1789 and 1790. In 1791 he was "levy free". In 1794 and 1795, the entries seem to imply that David Johnson paid his taxes. IN 1796, 1797, 1798, James was listed as exempt. He does not appear after 1798.

Isham Johnson was made guardian of David, Nancy & Molly Johnson in 1772 - Johnson researchers have assigned these children as children of James & Mildred Mims Johnson but there is no direct proof. It seems, based on the ages, that David, Nancy & Molly were more likely the children of James & Rachel Haden Johnson. There is also the death of a James Johnson recorded 26 Jun 1782, but no way to know which James Johnson - would not seem to be this one.

The David, ward of Isham, seems to have been the David Johnson JR, probably called Junior to differentiate him from his uncle David Johnson who was a brother of Isham. The David, who was a son of James & Mildred Mims Johnson is a bit too young to have created the records that are found in the name of David Johnson Jr.

Isham Johnson had guardianship of David, Nancy & Molly Johnson, children of James Johnson "Jr" from 1772 and for the next seven years [until 1779], but it isn't known definitely who their parents were.
If these wards of Isham were the children of James & Mildred: David was born 1762 and would not have been age 21 until 1783. Nancy was born 1769 and would not have been age 21 until 1790. Molly, if she was the daughter Mary, was born in 1760 and would have 21 by 1781. They would seem to have needed guardianship longer than up to 1779, especially Nancy. This also does not explain what happened to the other children of James & Mildred, who would have all been minors in 1772 as well.
