Fourth Generation

20. EDITH JANE IRWIN26,27,28 was born in September 1855 in Schuyler County, Illinois.4,27,29 She died on 24 August 1932 at the age of 76 in Crawford County, Arkansas.30

1930. Edith was living with son Clarence. She was widowed.

In the 1910 Census, Edith is shown as having had 12 children, 10 of them living. 1900 she states 11 children, 10 living - perhaps counted the twins as a single birth.

Family for Edith in Illinois. 1850 Schuyler Co ILBuena Vista Twp: Ira & Eliza Irwin both age 18 & both born in Ohio; he was a Cooper. On the next page is Robert Irvin age 59, farmer born in VA; Lavina age 54 b. KY; Harvey age 17 b. Ohio; Harrison age 14 b. Ohio; Amanda age 12 b. Ohio, Eleazar D. age 30 b. Ohio. Harvey & Eleazar both listed as Coopers.

1860 Schuyler Co Census: Ira age 29 born KY, Eliza age 27 b. OH with Wm H. age 9, Edith age 4, Robert L. age 2.

Died at age 78 of pneumonia. Informant for the DC was Margret Friddle, youngest daughter. Burial at Chester on 25 Aug 1932. Birthplace given as Illinois, but no date given - her age was said to be 78. Father Ira Irwin born Illinois. Mother Liza Ann Avery, born Illinois. [Parents did live in Illinois, but both were born in Ohio.]

Her grave marker, Chester Cemetery, seems to have errors. Her name is listed as:
Edith Jane (Iriwin) Harrison
Her birth is given as Dec 18, 1858. In 1880, she was age 24, or born 1855-56. In 1900, she claimed to have been born, September of 1855, she was then 44 years old. In 1910, she gave her age as 55, or born in later 1854 or 1855. In 1920, she have her age as 64. These ages are all consistent with a birth year of 1855, not 1858.
She died 24 Aug 1932. Her stone says she was 72 years at death - her death certificate stated she was 78. I would suspect her age when she was younger to be more accurate.
Her grave was not noted in the Crawford Co cemetery book, no grave is noted for her husband Elisha in the book nor on FindAGrave, which had the photo of her grave marker. I suspect her stone was placed some later; his grave perhaps never marked at all.

EDITH JANE IRWIN and ELISHA SHELTON HARRISON were married on 13 January 1876 in Schuyler County, Illinois.27,31,32 ELISHA SHELTON HARRISON26,27,33,34,35, son of NATHANIEL M. HARRISON and SARAH ANN "SALLY" GABBARD, was born on 20 October 1850 in Madison County, Kentucky.4,27,34,36,37 He died on 3 September 1929 at the age of 78 in Crawford County, Arkansas.34

License issued same date as Marriage - 13 Jan 1876. Married by Cornelius Mills, MG. Return 19 Jan 1876.

His death certificate stated he was born in 1855, and was age 73. This does not agree with information given for the census records. The death certificate has several errors.

1880 Census. Schuyler Co, IL Elisha Harrison, age 30 [b. circa 1850], b. KY; didn't know where his parents were born but maybe he didn't give the information. Edith, wife age 24, b. IL, parents b. Ohio. Clarence, son, age 3, May, age 2, and Jessie, daughter, age 1.

The family must have left for Arkansas soon after the birth of Edwin whose birth was recorded in Schuyler Co in Sep of 1886; later census information says Maudie was born in 1888 in Arkansas.

In 1900, Edith stated she had 10 living children Nine of the children are here - one of her twins had died. The child Maudie born in Feb of 1888 is the first child born in Arkansas - Edwin was born in Sep of 1886 in Illinois. There is another daughter as 3 sisters were listed in the obit of Mary Adamson: Maud Sheens, Mrs. Charles Friddle of Fayetteville (given name "Mary" but I think it should have read Margaret] and Mrs. Ned Robinson of Van Buren (1929). Further research indicates the missing daughter in 1900 was likely Nettie already married to Joe Robinson & living in Winfrey Township not far from her uncle Jacob Gabbard.
1900 Census. Crawford Co AR, Chester Twon, p.7, Hh 114

The 1910 Census shows Edwin is a son, as is Frederick. Also in 1910 in Dyer Twp is W. L. Harrison age 36, born in IN with wife Annie and children Mary and Hershel - but he is not likely part of the family based on his age & place of birth. Or is he a cousin?

Weymouth, gson, age 4 years, 6 months, b. AR
Jack, gson, age 1 month, b. AR

Elisha's middle name is from his death certificate. Clarence gave the information and gave Elisha's parents as John Harrison & Lizzie Gabert! "Lizzie" was probably Clarence's maternal grandmother - have no clue where the "John" might have come from. Date of birth 20 Oct 1855 and date of death 3 Sep 1929. This year of birth does not agree with any of the census records which are all consistent with a year of birth as 1850. I don't believe Clarence was very well informed concerning the family statistics! Elisha died of diabetes. Buried in Chester, AR.

EDITH JANE IRWIN and ELISHA SHELTON HARRISON had the following children:

Married by W. H. Taylor, JP on 30 Jul 1898, Crawford Co, AR. Marriage license taken out on 29 Jul. Joel A. Robinson of Crawford Co was age 29; Miss Nettie Harrison, of the same place, age 20.

Mrs. Ned Robinson of Van Buren listed as sister of Mary Adamson in her obit. Name may be incorrect. There is a marriage record in Crawford Co for 30 Jul 1898 - Nettie Harrison to Joe A. Robertson. The 1900 Census has Joseph Robison as head of household with wife Nettie born Nov 1877 and Baby Mary born May 1899. Nettie was born in Illinois; her father born in KY; mother born in IL. The family lived in Winfrey Township.

Marriage License to marry Fred Cradduck is a digital image on, dated 22 Dec 1937 Fred was age 53, Margaret Friddle, 43, both residents of Chester. T. L. Delzell signed the license as County Clerk. He was my maternal great-uncle, known to me as Uncle Lester, husband of my grandfather's sister, Edna Comstock. Fred and Margaret were married that same day by Earl B. Ward, County Judge.

1940 Census. Chester, Crawford, AR, Hh 36. Living next door to her nephew LeRoy Harrison and a few houses from her brothers Clarence and Fred.

Nov. 1961. "Maggie" Cradduck of Mountainburg was listed as surviving her brother, William.

She is buried Conley Cemetery, Mountainburg, Crawford Co, AR. Her stone simply has her name as Margaret Cradduck.

Fred Cradduck had also been married before. Another wife is listed as Frances Ellen Ridenour Cradduck - born 15 May 1875 in Daviess Co, MO and died 3 May 1962 in Gentry, Benton Co, AR. She is buried Oak Hill Cemetery in Siloam Springs, Benton Co, AR. Her death was some years after Fred had married Margaret - so Fred must have also been divorced when he and Margaret married.

Personal note:
My Adamson grandmother, Mary May (Harrison) Adamson died in 1929 when she was 34 - of pnuemonia and she was a twin. Actually, the second set of twins born in her family.
Her twin sister Margaret (who had arranged Mary May's funeral) lived until 1981 - right there in Mountainburg, on the highway down to Van Buren. I could have known her..... Margaret was living when Mom was notified about Ernie Adamson's death and didn't tell me until months after. Margaret was married twice, but never had any children. Of course, I don't know that Mother knew anything about Ernie's mother - I don't think she even knew she had died so young.
Just thought that a bit sad.
