Second Generation

8. Parthenia Jane "Thena" HAYS4,19,20,21 was born in 1838 in Tennessee.19,20,21,22,23 She died after 1900 at the age of 62.

I believe Parthenia was born in Tennesse, or perhaps Mississippi circa 1838. Probably came to Johnson Co, Arkansas with her mother Delitha, circa 1851. Parthenia's age given as 26 in the 1880 Census but this is wrong because in 1850 she was already age 12.

She married George William Haggard, as his second wife. He was some 25 years older than she and had grown children by his first wife, Zitha Rogers. There exists online a database of Haggards and not everything in that database is correct regarding this family.

1850. Tippah Co MS. "Delilah" Hays, widow, age 53 born NC with Parthena age 12 born TN. Also 3 young girls live with Delitha - Mary and Alethe Ball, ages 11 & 9, and Elizabeth Vincent age 4.
I believe this Parthenia Haggard to be Parthenia Hays of the 1850 Census and the same lady that testified when Martha Frances (Crutcher) Hays applied for the Union Civil War Pension of Elisha. Parthenia stated she was present at their marriage.

1900 Census lists Thena Haggard, age 65, born Jan 1835, widowed. Says she was born in Arkansas as were both her parents. Perhaps she did not give this information. She lived next door to W. W. Haggard, a stepson. Said 5 children born, 5 living. The Haggard data also listed a 6th child, a Mary Frances, "Mae", born about 1875 who married Steven Denny & had 10 children - she was not listed in the 1880 Census - I believe she was misplaced and does not belong in the family at all.

Parthenia Jane "Thena" HAYS and George William HAGGARD were married about 1868 in Crawford County, Arkansas.22,24 George William HAGGARD23,24,25,26, son of William Riley HAGGARD and Mary Ellen GENTRY, was born on 18 February 1813 in Bedford County, Tennessee.21,22,24 He died in 1886 at the age of 73 in Crawford County, Arkansas.24

Data on the Haggard family found online. Not verified although Clinton Haggard seemed to be a thorough researcher. Gives names of published works on the Haggard family but not specific sources of information for the data.

The Haggard files indicated the last 2 children of Ziltha & George W. were born in Crawford Co, AR. Mary Jane Comstock stated in her book that they were in the 1850 Carroll Co TN Census & then moved to Franklin, AR soon after; moved to Crawford Co, Dripping Springs about 1866. [This is wrong, George & Ziltha were in Crawford Co for the 1860 Census] Probably married Parthenia Hays about 1868 in Crawford Co AR.

In the various Haggard databases, a child S. J. Haggard, b. in 1840 is listed in the family of George and Ziltha. After finding this name in the 1870 Census, I suspect S.J. may be a misunderstanding of "P. J." Parthenia Jane "Thena" 2nd wife of George W. Haggard. There was no child of this age in the 1850 census and this is the approximate age of Parthenia.

1850 Census: Carroll Co TN, p.36b; household 474. G. W. Haggard, age 37, b. TN. Ziltha R. age 41, b. NC. Children born in Tennessee: Alfred M. 13, Francis N. 11, George R. 7., William W. 5, and Rebecca C. age 1.

George W. Haggard received a land patent for 162.64 acres, on 30 Oct 1857, from the land office in Clarksville - in Franklin Co AR
Two tracts - both in Section 26 Twp 8 N, Range 28 W. The North 1/2 of the NE 1/4 and the North 1/2 of the NW 1/4.
On the same day he received another 81.33 acres in Franklin:the South 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Section 23, Twp 8 N, Range 28 W.
On 3/1/1860, he received still another 40.66 acres in Franklin (althoug I suspect he had already move) - the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 26, near his first patent.

In 1860, Alfred was in Franklin Co AR, p.398; household 1122. Alfd. Haggard, age 24, Martha age 21 and Wm S. age 1.

1860, George & Ziltha had already moved to Crawford Co, Lee's Creek Twp. Geo. W. Haggard age 47, b. TN. Ziltha A., age 50, b. TN. The children also were all listed as born in Tennessee: Geo. R. age 17, Wm W. age 14, Rebecca C. age 10, and Charles Mc. 7.

1865. Kansas State Census. Centerville Twp, Linn Co, Kansas. Dated 21 July. Hh 298
George W. Haggard, 52, b. TN
William W. Haggard 17, b. TN
Rebecca C. Haggard, 16, b. TN
Charles McN. Haggard, 13, b. AR
This family listed in the same household, but I suspect the enumerator just forgot to number them:
Barton Robinson 56, b. England. Mahala, 52, b. KY. Landers 22 and Fremont, 16, born Illinois

The 1870 Census shows George Hagard, age 58 born in TN and "S.J." female age 30 born in Arkansas [probably P.J. or even T. J. for "Thena"]. "C.M." "Charles" is 18, male, born in Arkansas. The Haggard files shows these to be children of George. I suspect "S.J." is actually Parthenia Jane as she was approximately that age and they had married. C. M. was of course the youngest child of George & Ziltha. George & Parthenia are on the same page of the census in Cedar Creek Twp as her brother Elias B. Hays.

On 20 Jun 1876, George W. Haggard received a patent for 80 acres in Crawford County:
Section 35, Twp 10 N, Range 32 W - the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 and the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 - these would be adjoining tracts.

1880 Census. Jasper Twp, Crawford Co AR. Hh 18
George W. Haggard, age 67, Farmer, b. TN. Birthplace of parents unreadable
Thenia, wife. Age appears to be 26 which is impossible. Born AR as were parents.
Martha E., daughter, age 10. "Willie" age 8 marked as a son but this has to be Rella. Marked as twin with, Sarah, daughter age 8. Thenia, daughter age 3 and Washington, son, age 4.

Parthenia Jane "Thena" HAYS and George William HAGGARD had the following children:

Martha E. HAGGARD.

Rilla Caroline "Sis" HAGGARD.

George Washington "Wash" HAGGARD.

Thenia HAGGARD was born in 1877.21,22
Likely died young. Nothing else has ever been found.
