1860 Census. James D. and Martha were in Eagle Township, Boone Co IN. His brother Charles, age 15, was also living with the family.

Hi, Your James Marion Harmon's parents are James Dickerson Harmon, b.1828, and Martha Ann Cooper, b.1832. James Dickerson Harmon's parents are James Harmon, b.1797, and Philadelphia Dickerson, b.1797. James's parents are John L. Harmon, b.1767, and Elizabeth Byrd. I hope that helps.


James is buried Salem Cemetery, Eagle Twp, Boone, Co.

According to the manuscript in the surname file of the Lebanon Library, James drove a stage between Thorntown and Lafayette as a young man. Also mentions that they lived in Iowa for a short time.

James Marion HARMON9 was born on 21 April 1859 in Boone County, Indiana.53 He died on 11 April 1915 at the age of 55 in Boone County, Indiana.9 He was buried in Salem Cemetery, Zionsville, Boone County, Indiana.55

James married Zerelda Clements, 8 Jun 1881, Boone Co IN. she was born 27 May 1862, died 3 Mar 1918.

In the Harmon surname file at the Lebanon Library is what appears to be a clipping from a newspaper. There is no date. From the article it is evident that James M. Harmon of Eagle township, is running for the office of county treasurer on the Republican ticket. He was at that time, 47 years of age, dating the article as 1906. He was the father of eight sons, all living, from age 1 to 18 years. Mr. Harmon lived 4 and 1/2 miles southwest of Zionsville on his farm of 179 acres. He was the son of the late James D. Harmon, commonly known as Jay Harmon. Mr. Harmon has never before held office. He was the nominee of the Republican party for county auditor eight years earlier was was defeated by David H. Shockley. "If he shall be elected, and all evidence points in that direction, he will make a worthy and efficient official."

There is a photo on an Ancestry family tree, said taken 1910, that does indeed show the eight children Son Dare at about age four is still in a dress as was the custom.

Philadelphia married John B. Lemon, 27 Dec 1883. Her name recorded as Delphia J. Harmon. She is buried Salem Cemetery, Zionsville, Boone Co as Philadephia J. Lemon.
John B. Lemon was the son of William & Nell Lemon, b. 1861, d. 1936.

There is an earlier marriage: Philadelphia Harmon to Samuel D. Ayers, 12 Mar 1881. Was this an earlier marriage? Why did she marry again as Harmon, if so? A FindAGrave Memorial# 86280175 for Elizabeth Harmon, daughter of Nelson S. Harmon, shows she married a Samuel Ayers - they are buried Clinton Co, IN - Elizabeth born 1861, Samuel, born 1854. Is there an error in the marriage transcript - or was her name Elizabeth Philadelphia - one census record does have her as Eliza. P. - Yes, there were two cousins, both Philadelphia - this one married John B. Lemon - the other married Samuel O. Ayers. Two different ladies.

William Morton HARMON9 was born on 24 November 1865 in Boone County, Indiana.53 He died in 1934 at the age of 69 in Marion County, Indiana.9

William was a bachelor. He graduated from Valparaiso University and taught school for several years. He served in the Spanish American War, Tampa Bay, Florida, serving in Co. A, 157 Indiana Infantry. He mined for gold in Alaska. He farmed many years in Eagle Township, Boone Co. He was aged 75 years, 8 months, and 14 days when he died and is buried Salem Cemetery, Eagle Township, Boone Co IN.
