Haden, Joel H.
Daughter: Martha J. Shirley, wife of James A.

18 Jun 1846. Joel H. Haden sold to Martha's brother, James H. Haden, several lots in Fayetteville and several slaves in possession of Martha's husband James Shirley. The slaves were a man Jerry, woman Lucinda and her child Nancy, a girl Eliza about age 9 and a girl Maria about age 7. Martha was to have use of them during her lifetime and afterward they were to become the sole property of her children. Howard Co DB W, p.251
Apparently he wanted to make sure Martha's husband could not dispose of the slaves.

Martha Jane HADEN and James A. SHIRLEY were married on 21 November 1833 in Howard County, Missouri.509,511 James A. SHIRLEY was born in 1800 in Virginia.511

Martha Jane HADEN and James A. SHIRLEY had the following children:

Joel H. SHIRLEY was born in 1835 in Missouri.511 He died before December 1867 at the age of 32.

Martha A. SHIRLEY was born in 1837 in Missouri.511

Her age is difficult to read in the 1850 census but I do think it was 13, not 18 - the 1860 census agrees with the younger age.

Martha married Horatio Bostwick.

Ibera S. SHIRLEY was born in 1842 in Missouri.511

James A. SHIRLEY Jr. was born in 1846 in Missouri.511

This family has been very elusive in the census records. In 1870, I did find a James Shirley of approximate age living in Morris Twp, Carroll Co, MO. He was age 23, a farmer. Ruth, age 28, was his apparent spouse.

Charles H. SHIRLEY was born in 1848 in Missouri.511 He died before December 1867 at the age of 19.

Charles was age 11 in the 1860 census, but not mentioned as heir of his mother in December of 1867.
