437. Tyree Joseph HADEN218,298,302 was born on 27 November 1819 in Logan County, Kentucky.302 He died on 29 January 1905 at the age of 85 in Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Tyree and Mourning married in time to be enumerated on the 1840 Census, Platte Co MO: Tyre Hayden, age 20-30; with a female of the same age. They were listed with Josiah Thorp and his sons Thomas and Zachariah.

In MISSOURI MARRIAGES TO 1850 on Ancestry is the following record in Platte Co MO:
_____, Tyree to Thorp, Morning, married 19 Jun 1840.

1850 Census, Platte Co MO, Preston Twp, p.396, Household 101
Tyree Hayden age 29, b. KY. Mourning age 31, b. KY. Mary age 10, Saml. 8, Tabitha 5, Ann 4, and William age 1. The four children born in MO.

Simpson Co KY Census, 1860

[Phillips Cemetery, Simpson Co, has the following: Morning Hayden, 14 Feb 1818-15 Jun 1861; Mary E. Haden, 9 Dec 1840-11 Jun 1861; Ann E. Haden, 24 Jan 1846-23 Jul 1861]

Civil War Draft Registration. Class II, 3rd Confressional District included Simpson Co. Feb 1864.
Tyra Haden, age 43, Farmer, b. Kentucky, no military service

1870 Census, Simpson Co KY; Franklin Sub Dist 150; p. 67, Household 161:
Tyrie Hayden, age 50, Farmer, b. KY Henry, age 26 [This is not the son Samuel H. - he was found as S. H. Haden age 27 in Warren Co, b. MO - could this be Henry Haden, son of Tyree's brother William? William had remarried.] Tabitha age 25, b. MO, William age 21, Sarah C age 13. Also Jane, age 58, Value of personal property $1700, b. KY - she would appear to be the Jane Haden that was living with Tyree's father Samuel in 1860. Was she a wife of Samuel H.'s in his old age?? - probably would be the third wife if so.
Also in 1870 in Logan Co is a William T. Haden, with wife Lou, both age 21 - is this the William in Tyree's household, age 12 in 1860? They had 4 month old William J. and what appear to be three boarders: Newton Poston age 18 b. TN, Mary Lawler age 22, b. KY and Nellie Fugate age 12, b. KY. They lived in Shocco Precinct.

1870 Census, Warren Co KY, Lucus Precinct, p.217b, Household 59. S. H. Haden, age 27, Farmer, b. MO, Elizabeth E. age 23, b. KY, Oren O. age 4 [this childs name is listed as though Oren/Owen was his surname, O. an initial, but I can't be sure]

1880 Census, Muhlenberg Co KY; p.65D
Tyraa Haden, age 61, b. KY. Sarah C. Haden, daughter, age 23.

I believe the following Samuel H. Haden is Tyree's son:
Smith's Grove, Warren Co KY: List of Soldiers buried includes:
S. H. Haden, b. 24 Oct 1842 and d. 26 Oct 1926
He's probably the Samuel H. Haden listed online at Ancestry's Civil War Database [Union]:
Enlisted as Sgt 1st Class 20 Aug 1862, Co A, 33rd Infantry Regt of KY on 13 Sep 1862
Commission in Co. F, 26th Infantry Regt, KY 1 Apr 1864 [this was a consolidation of these two units]; promoted to Full Lt. 2nd Class 15 Oct 1864.
Mustered out 30 Jun 1865, Salisbury, NC
There is a pension card for Samuel H. Haden whose widow was Abbie Haden. Invalid Pension filed 26 Jul 1889 in Kansas: App #718984, Cert #624885. Widow's Penions App 1730.029 filed KY on Feb 10 1931?

1885 Kansas State Census. SunnyDale P.O., Lincoln Twp, Sedgwick Co
Family 32
Wm Haden, age 36, farmer, b. MO, came from Kentucky to Kansas
Sue E., age 38, b. KY
Mable 10, Stanley 7, Lizzie 5, Girtie 3, Lester 1, born in Kansas
Tyree, age 63, b. KY, came from Kentucky

I found a Kansas State Census, Sedwick Co, 1905, for an S. H. Haden of the proper age to be Samuel; he had been there in 1875 and 1885 as well. He was born Missouri and had come to Kansas from Kentucky. In 1905, which gave little information, there was a male, age 86, T. Haden, living with Samuel and his first wife Elizabeth. Surely this was Tyree.

I did find him buried, El Paso Cemetery, Derby, Sedgwick Co Kansas with the dates:
27 Nov 1819; died 29 Jan 1905.

Tyree Joseph HADEN and Mourning THORPE were married on 19 June 1840 in Platte County, Missouri. Mourning THORPE, daughter of Josiah THORPE and Nancy HARRIS, was born on 14 February 1818 in Kentucky. She died on 15 June 1861 at the age of 43 in Simpson County, Kentucky.

Platte Co MO, in 1840, p.140, was Zachariah "Tharpe", age 60-70 with another male, age 20-30 and a female age 50-60.
Josiah Thorpe is there [indexed as "Sharpe]. Josiah had 2 males age 15-20, himself age 60-70; 1f 15-20, and 1f 50-60
A younger Zachariah, son of Josiah was next: He was age 30-40, 1f -5, and 1f 20-30.
Next was Tyre Hayden, age 20-30; with a female of the same age.
After Tyree is Thomas Tharpe [Josiah's son, as Zachariah's son Thomas did not leave Kentucky] Thomas Tharpe, as 1m -5, 1m 5-10, himself age 30-40; 1f -5, 1f 5-10, and 1f age 20-30.
Another son of Josiah was present in Platte Co
Squire B. Tharpe: 2m -5, 1m 5-10, 2m 10-15, himself, age 40-50 [he was just about 40]; 3f 5-10, 1f 15-20, and 1f 30-40.

It's interesting that Zachariah Thorpe married Mourning Harris, daughter of Rev. Christopher Harris II and Elizabeth Grubbs. Christopher Harris's grandmother was Mourning Glenn and the given name appears often in the Harris families. Christopher & Elizabeth had married 21 Oct 1776 and moved from Madison Co KY to Simpson Co when it was still part of Logan Co, circa 1816. Another daughter of Christopher & Elizabeth, Nancy Harris, married Zachariah's brother Josiah on the same day in Madison Co, 11 Oct 1799 - the brothers served each other as bondsman, and Christopher did give permission for Mourning to marry as she wasn't yet eighteen. I was sure that Mourning Thorpe must belong in one of these families - online databases indicate Zachariah & his wife Mourning, never named a daughter Mourning, but Josiah and Nancy Harris Thorpe, did indeed have a daughter named Mourning. Finding Tyree and Mourning Thorpe Haden living in the midst of Josiah's family would seem to insure that is her family.

Tyree Joseph HADEN and Mourning THORPE had the following children:

Mary E. HADEN was born on 9 December 1840 in Missouri. She died on 11 June 1861 at the age of 20 in Simpson County, Kentucky.

Samuel H. HADEN was born on 24 October 1842 in Missouri. He died on 26 October 1926 at the age of 84 in Warren County, Kentucky.

The following Samuel H. Haden is surely Tyree's son:
Smith's Grove, Warren Co KY: List of Soldiers buried includes:
S. H. Haden, b. 24 Oct 1842 and d. 26 Oct 1926
He's probably the Samuel H. Haden listed online at Ancestry's Civil War Database [Union]:

There is a pension card for Samuel H. Haden whose widow was Abbie Haden. Invalid Pension filed 26 Jul 1889 in Kansas: App #718984, Cert #624885. Widow's Pensions App 1730.029 filed KY on Feb 10 1931.

I was able to obtain copies of the pension file. He served first as a 1st Sgt, Company A, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry - a unit later consolidated into Company F, 16th Kentucky by which time he was a 2nd Lt. He enlisted 17 Aug 1862 at Bowling Green, KY, and was discharged 30 June 1864, Salisbury, NC. Samuel first applied for his invalid pension 16 Jul 1889 in Sedgwick Co, Kansas. He was then age 46 and disabled due to chronic diarrhea and malarial poisoning contracted during the war. He had been a farmer but was able to do physical labor only about half the time. His first pension was $12 a month, but various re-examinations because of increasing disability as well as changes in the pension laws, eventually increased his pension to $50 a month by 1920. In one of his applications for increase he listed his residences as Simpson County KY for two years following the war; then he lived in Warren county until October of 1870 when he moved to Kansas, near Wichita. It's interesting that the physical examinations always concurred with his complaints - his weight varied from 165 to 215 during the years he was examined. He was obviously not a well man. In 1890 and 1892, his brother William, also living in Sedgwick Co, Kansas, testified on his behalf, and said he'd lived near him all but one year since the war. In one of the documents, Samuel stated that his wife was Elizabeth Ellen Haynes and they had been married on 3 Oct 1865, Warren Co, KY, by Rev. J. G. Durham. By 1912, Samuel was again requesting a re-evaluation of his pension and he was living in Warren Co, KY, having returned there from Kansas in 1908. He stated he was born 29 Oct 1842, Platt Co, MO. He was now married to Elizabeth Abbie Haynes - he called her "Miss" Haynes, but stated her maiden name was James. [ A Haynes stepson was noted in the census.] They had married 15 Jun 1910, in Bowling Green; officated by Rev. John W. Wheeler. He stated that his former wife had died 8 Nov 1909. Samuel had no children, living or dead. He was dropped from the pension rolls because of his death on 26 Oct 1926.

Abbie, Samuel's widow applied for the final payment of his accrued pension. She was born 18 Apr 1862, Oakland, Warren Co, KY. She was first married to C. T. Haynes who died 10 Aug 1902. Haynes had never served in the Army or Navy. She also applied for his widow's pension, 10 Dec 1932, as his only surviving wife, stating she had to nurse him during the last days of his afflictions and care for him in declining health. Unfortunately, her application was denied. The law stated that she had to be married to the veteran prior to 27 Jun 1905, and of course, she was not. Also since his death had occurred some 61 years following his discharge, it was not proved that the death was due to a disability originating in the line of duty.

My observations: Although Samuel obviously suffered many digestive, stomach, and bowel problems and was apparently somewhat jaundiced, quite likely from liver damage following malaria, he managed to live a very long life. I'm sure Abbie did have to act as his caregiver in the later years. The Pension Act of 4 Mar 1913, an amendment to the Act of 11 May 1912, had stated that the widow had to be married to the pensioner prior to 27 Jun 1905 in order to be entitled to a pension after his death. I don't believe this was ever changed.
