I strongly suspect this is the James M. Haden whose estate file is found in Rowan Co NC; he died 1898. The age is right and he named a son John Nelson Haden.

James' wife died first but she was the owner of several pieces of property.

Complaint of 21 Apr 1898 …Loula Haden of Salsbury died 3 Dec 1897, possessed of several pieces of property. Plaintiff James M. Haden is surviving husband and entitled to a life estate in lands. He is now 62, born 7 Jan 1836. James D. Haden, Reeves W. Haden, Mattie Haden & John Nelson Haden and the defendant Samuel S. Haden are the only children and heirs at law of Loula Haden. They are without guardian.

Samuel S. Haden is of full age, born Nov 12 1875, but not competent to manage his own affairs. James D. Haden, b. Aug 24, 1877. Reeves W. born 2 Sep 1879. Mattie b. Nov 18, 1881. John Nelson b. Mar 24, 1884.
The whole of real estate is worth about $2500, difficult to rent. Should be sold and money invested in properties that would provide income.
Haden has been offered $1800 cash for house and lot on Fulton Street - by Dr. John Whithead - which is considered a fair price.

16 May 1898 - case to cause sale of properties of Loula to James M. Haden, her husband for benefit of James D. Haden, Reeves W. Haden, Mattie Haden & John Nelson Haden, as well as Samuel, who was not competent
James M. wanted title to properties and thought he could better manage for benefit of children. Claimed his 43 % interest in the properties, too.
Properties were located at Spencer NC [Rowan Co]
2 May 1898 - Brought to the attention of the court that the defendant Samuel S. Haden has married a wife. Plaintiff to be allowed to amend the complaint.
Papers concerning Carrie Haden, wife of Samuel S. Thos H. Vanderford Jr was also her guardian as she was underage.
Vanderford was apptd guardian for Carrie Haden on 16 May 1898

The incompetency hearing of son Samuel took place during the lifetime of James M. Haden, but after the death of his mother:

Petition of James M. Haden, Samuel S. Haden is incompetent from want of understanding to manage his own affairs by reason of excessive use of intoxicating drink or other cause and that said Samuel S. Haden is 22 years of age.
He is entitled to an undivided one-fifth interest in the real estate of his mother, deceased. It is important a guardian be appointed.
Jury was called and on 11 Mar 1898 they declared Samuel insane and incompetent.
Jurors are named in the file.

Thomas p. Johnston was the Administrator of the estate of James M. Haden.
Thomas P. Johnston stated James M. Haden died without will, next of kin renounced admin. Heirs are James D., Samuel S., Reeves W., Mattie L. & John N.
3 Mar 1900 James D. was the only one over 21 years. [Samuel was also over 21 but incompetent.]

I found none of the children of James M. in the 1900 census.

James Merrywether HADEN and Mary LouEllen "Loula" REEVES were married on 14 October 1874 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Mary LouEllen "Loula" REEVES was born in 1850 in North Carolina. She died on 3 December 1897 at the age of 47 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

2057	ii.	James D. HADEN was born on 24 August 1877 in North Carolina. Rowan Co marriages: James D. Haden married Bessie Shinn, 21 Jul 1902. 1910. Salisbury, Rowan Co NC James D. Hayden, age 33, b. NC, working as a Conductor on the Rail Road Bessie, wife, age 28. They've been married for 8 years. She's had two children, one living. Jack, son, age 5.

2059	iv.	Mattie HADEN was born on 18 November 1881 in North Carolina. This is possibly Mattie in 1910: 1910 Census. Charlotte, Ward 1, Mecklenburg Co NC Mattie Haden living as a boarder in the household of Mary E. Asberry. Age 30. Working as a stenographer in an insurance office. Mattie L. Haden married Walter J. Nuebling, 20 May 1917, Rowan Co NC. 1920 Census. North Albemarle Twp, Stanly Co, NC Walter Nuebling, age 29, b. Pennsylvania. Civil engineer at Tallassee Power Co Mattie, wife, age 38, b. NC, father b. VA, mother b. NC Dorothy, daughter, age 2
2060	v.	John Nelson HADEN was born on 24 March 1884 in North Carolina. John N. Haden married Ethel Mae Armfield, 23 Aug 1916, Rowan Co. NC. 1920 Census Salisbury, Rowan Co NC Hayden, N. John, age 34. M. Ethel, age 24 N. John, son, age 2 6/12 [2 years, six months] E. James, son, age 3/12 [3 months old] The enumerator apparently placed middle initials first.
