32. ELIZABETH GENTRY was born about 1770 in Louisa County, Virginia.⁴

One data base had Elizabeth Gentry as deceased after 1822 in Owsley Co KY. Owsley Co was not formed until 1843.

ELIZABETH GENTRY and ELIJAH BOWMAN were married on 4 November 1795 in Madison County, Kentucky.^7,8 ELIJAH BOWMAN⁹, son of CORNELIUS BOWMAN and SUSANNAH POINTER, was born in 1773 in Virginia.⁶ He died in 1840 at the age of 67.⁶

Madison Co KY Court Orders, Book B: 7 Jul 1796: John Bowman and Elijah Bowman were two of the commissioners ordered to view a way for a road from Archibald Woods mill seat on Muddy Creek to intersect the Muddy Creek road near William Goodlows.

Henry Gentry was Bondsman for the marriage to Elizabeth Gentry. Nicholas Gentry, father of the bride.

Next door in household 49 was Henry C. Bowman, age 23.

SARAH "SALLY" BOWMAN was born in 1798 in Madison County, Kentucky.^7,12 She died in 1885 at the age of 87 in Jackson County, Kentucky.⁷
In 1860, Sarah is listed as age 62 - or born 1798.

R. Michael Smith copied the following from the actual marriage documents at Clay Co KY from File Drawer #2: 2 Mar 1818 Jacob Gabbard, Cornelius Bowman & Nicholas Bowman gave permission for Edward Gabbard & Sarah Bowman to marry. On 8 Mar 1818, Edward and Sarah were married by E. W. Bowman.
The oldest son's census records indicate he was born 1815, but this is very likely an error since the next son was not born for another five years.

Married Lyttle Hughes. A descendant of her sister Deborah gives a marriage date as 21 Sep 1821, as well as a birth of Jul 1801. I have not found her in a census.

Nancy\Ann Elizabeth BOWMAN¹³ was born (date unknown).
Married Jacob Gibson. I cannot find them in the 1850 census in KY to confirm her birth year.
Other databases give her birth year as 1822. This is wrong. I found her marriage listed on the Clay Co USGenWeb page:
Jacob Gibson married Nancy Bowman - Date of bond: 17 Jan 1824 Date of marriage 19 Jan 1824.
I failed to find a Jacob Gibson in KY censuses beginning as early as 1830.
Some databases also list an Ann Bowman, b. 1805 who married an unknown Roberts. I suspect perhaps Jacob Gibson died at an early age and Ann/Nancy remarried. That would explain why no Jacob Gibson can be found.

Joseph BOWMAN¹⁴ was born in 1808 in Kentucky.¹⁴ He died on 22 January 1863 at the age of 55 in Breathitt County, Kentucky.¹⁰
Married Sinthia [Cynthia] Crawfrod 9 Oct 1829 Estill Co KY. Cynthia was the daughter of Archibald Crawford and Margaret Brown, born 11 Oct 1809, Estill Co; died between 1850 and 1860, Breathitt co, KY.
They are in Breathitt Co KY in the 1850 Census, p.21b, Household 63.
Joseph Bowman, age 42, Farmer worth $2000, b. KY. Sytha age 40, Adison age 18, Angeline age 17, Arminta/America age 15, Moranda age 12, George W. age 18, Andrew J. age 8, Margaret age 5, Zachary T. age 3, and Madison, 9 months old.
Joseph was killed by confederate forces, led by Lt. Smith, near Bear Creek, Breathitt Co. KY

Deborah BOWMAN¹⁵ was born on 28 March 1810 in Kentucky. She died in 1863 at the age of 53.
Deborah's date of birth is given by descendants as 28 Mar 1810 - the census of 1850 shows her to be 36, so perhaps she fudged a little.
Deborah married John Henson Brandenburg on 19 Jan 1834, Clay Co KY, according to date from descendants. He was a son of Samuel Brandenburg and Sarah Henson, born 6 Mar 1801, Clark Co KY; died Nov 1860, Lee Co KY.
In 1850 they were living in Clay Co KY next door to a Joseph Brandenburg who was 81 years old, probably his father.
John H. Brandenburg, age 48, Farmer worth $3000, b. KY; Debby age 36, Hardin age 15, Elijah age 12, Ansel age 9, Samuel age 7, John age 5, Delinah age 2 [male], and James Luckey, age 21, a Laborer, no doubt a farm hand.

Elisha Williamson BOWMAN¹⁶ was born on 2 February 1815 in Clay County, Kentucky.¹⁰ He died circa 1910 at the age of 95 in Madison County, Kentucky.

Elisha lived two houses from his brother Joseph in Breathitt Co KY in 1850. Page 21b, Household 61.

Married Rachel Plummer.
There was a Henry Bowman both in Clay Co and Breathitt Co KY, in 1850, but the one in Breathitt is surely this Henry. Page 19b, Household 34.
Henry Bowman, age 34, Farmer worth $500, b. KY; Rachel age 27, Permelia age 10, E. Green age 8 [male], Amanda G. age 7, Greenbury age 5, Malvina age 4, James or Jonas age 3, Lucinda age 9 months. Then on the next line is a very cryptic note "at Wm Gamble's ...1 year old female".

Isabell "Ibby" BOWMAN^18,19 was born in 1820 in Kentucky.¹⁸ She died in 1885 at the age of 65 in Kentucky.¹⁰
Married Valentine Crawford, 5 Jul 1837, Estill Co KY - son of Archibald & Margaret (Brown) Crawford. Database of a descendant of Isabell's sister Deborah who married John H. Brandenburg, gives a birth year for Isabell as 1820. This is correct according to the 1850 Census when she is found with Valentine Crowford in Breathitt Co KY. They lived next door to her brother Nicholas and his family.
Valentine Crawford, age 39, Farmer, worth $1500, b. KY. Isabel, age 30. Libery, male, age 12, Simeon age 9, Elizabeth age 7. Two school teachers were boarding with the family - Peter Thomas age 25 and Allen Thomas age 21, both born in VA.
Valentine and Isabelle were still living in Breathitt Co in 1880, page 580b. He was age 69, and Isabelle age 60. Valentine's father was born in VA; his mother b. KY.
