You asked for information about Vincent Garner. I don't have a lot. One of the Delaware County histories I looked at (I cannot tell you which one at present.) said that the history of the family was lost in a fire that occurred in Vincent Garner's house. Most of what I have is from the census at this point. I have that he was born about 1827 and died about 1892. His wife was Julia A., but I am not sure whether I have her maiden name or not. I'll have to look. His children from the census are Alfred b. 1852, Austin b. 1853, Amanda b. 1857, George, b. 1859, Sarah E. b. 1862, John b. 1864. And not from the census Melvina b. 1851. Melvina was my great grandmother. I don't have much on her family because I wasn't convinced that this was her family. My aunt always said her father was Vincent Garner, but she does not appear with the family in the 1860 census. She was born in 1851 and married by 1870, so that was the only census to find her with her family, and she just isn't there by that name anyway. When I went to Muncie last year, I went to the courthouse and looked at the entry for her death certificate, and it did say that her father was Vincent Garner and her mother Julia, but I cannot remember the maiden name if it was there. So, I am accepting that it was. I have not looked up too much about the family yet though. It puzzles me that she was not there in 1860. I realize that it could have been an error but still...

1860 Census: IN, Delaware Co:
Vincent R. Garent was age 32, farmer, born in Ohio. Julia A. was age 30, b. Kentucky. Children all born in KY. Alfred, age 7; Amanda E. age 6, George 1, Austin 4, Amelia A. Wallace age 15, and Nancy E. Carroll age 19, School Teacher.
1870 Census: IN, Delaware Co:
Vincent Garner age 43, Farmer, born Indiana. Julia A. age 41, Keeping House, b. KY. Children all born in IN: Alfred age 18, Austin age 17, Amanda E. age 13, George 11, Sarah E. 9 and John age 6.
1880 Census: IN Delaware Co IN
Vincent Garener age 52, b. IN, both parents born in NC. Julia A. age 51, wife, she and both parents b. KY. Alfred age 28, George age 21, John age 16. All working as farmhands and born in Indiana. Ettie Childe, age 34, servant, was living with the family.

HISTORY OF DELAWARE CO INDIANA; G. W. H. Kemper MD; 1908; Vol. 1, p.326. Refers to the late Vincent Garner, son of Enoch Garner.

Vincent Robert GARNER and Julia A. RUTHERFORD were married about 1851 in Delaware County, Indiana.48 Julia A. RUTHERFORD51 was born in 1829 in Kentucky.48

1900 Census, Julia was living with her son Austin. She stated she was widowed. She stated she was mother of 4 children, 4 children living - she must have misunderstood the question and meant she had four living children.

Her surname comes from a Garner database at
http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~sturm/garner.htm

Vincent Robert GARNER and Julia A. RUTHERFORD had the following children:

77

i.

Melvina GARNER52,53,54 was born in 1851 in Indiana.

There is a question whether or not Melvina belongs in this family. Although she is in some databases, she isn't in the Garner datasbase at
http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~sturm/garner.htm
She is not in censuses with the family. Her father had not yet married in 1850. Alfred was born Oct of 1851 and Austin was born May of 1853, if the right information is in the 1900 census. Melvina gave her age as 19 in 1870 and age 29 in 1880 - consistent with a birth in 1851. Yet her death certificate gave her father as Vincent Garner and her mother as Julia. Could she have been Alfred's twin?

Melvina married Enos Hutson, son of John Hutson, also of Delaware Co IN.

1860 Census. IN, Delaware Co
John Hutson was age 45, born Ohio. Wife Martha J. was 26, born Indiana Obviously Martha J. was a second marriage as the children, all born in Indiana, were Enos age 19, Lewis 16, the third child, a male, was 12 - his name is unreadable. Sarah was age 9, Mary E. age 3, Louisa age 1, and Columbus as 2 months.. From the ages of the children, it would appear that only the three youngest children were those born to Martha J.

1870 Census. IN, Delaware Co
Enos Hutson was age 29. Malvina age 19, and daughter Elenora age 1.
John Hutson was on the same page, now age 56. Martha J. was 35. Children listed with them were Sarah E. age 18, Rosa A age 6, Thadeus S. age 3, and Ida B. age 1. It would seem that all three of the children born to Martha prior to 1860 had died before 1870.

1880 Census. IN, Delaware Co
Enos Hutson, age 39, b. IN. He didn't give the birthplace of his parents. Melvina, wife, age 29, born IN as were both her parents. Children are Nora A. age 10, Lora M. age 9, and William V. age 1. A nephew, Willis McLaughlin, age 13, was living with them.
Enumerated next was John Huston, age 66, born Ohio, his parents born in NC. Martha J. was now 45, b. IN, her parents parn Tenn. Thadius S. was 12 and Ida B. age 11. Joseph L. ?McCalicter was age 11, living with the family as a farm hand. Also there was a Jane Adamson in the household. She was age 25 and had a child Verla, age 11 months who had been born in July, presumably July of 1879.

Alfred GARNER55 was born in October 1851 in Indiana.49 Alfred was in the 1900 census. Born Oct 1851. He had been married 19 years, so they married about 1881. His wife, Ella, was born May 1860 in Indiana as were her parents. They had had only one child, Don E. born March of 1885 and now age 15.

iii.

Austin GARNER51 was born in May 1853 in Indiana.49,51 In 1900, Austin's wife was listed as Orilla, born Oct 1853, married 27 years. She had 3 children, but only 1 living. She and her parents born in Virginia.
Austin was born in Mary 1853. They apparently married 1873. His mother was living with them.
