Sixth Generation

73. Zadock Wright POINDEXTER95,110 was born about 1820 in Monroe County, Kentucky.64 He died on 4 July 1859 at the age of 39 in Dade County, Missouri.45

Son William Arche Poindexter's application to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls, Case #7282, stated he was born Dec 1843 in Crawford Co, MO, placing this family in Missouri some earlier that 1850.

Served in the Mexican War.
In 1850, Zadock and family lived in Dade Co MO. p.296b, Dwelling 486. He is listed as Rite [Wright] Poindexter. Sarah is present with the children as given here. Zebedee was 2/12 so probably born March or April of 1850. They were living near William Poindexter, his nephew, and Sarah Poindexter Scott, his niece.

Will from Dade Co WB 1, p.146 is dated 2 Jul 1859. Land to beloved Wife, 480 acres, less 10 acres deeded to Richard J. Poindexter. After her death or widowhood to be divided equally among heirs: Son James Robert Poindexter has $375 dollars in cattle which if sold and half given to estate is not to be charged to him. If he doesn't pay half, then the $375 is to be a portion of his share of Estate. Also he has had $100 which shall be a portion of his share and he is not to receive anything more until the others have received the same. Daughter Mary Jane Pollan has received $106. Son Richard James has received $140. Other heirs are William Arche Poindexter, Rebecca Flin Poindexter, Zeddock Wright Poindexter, and Zebidee Poindexter. Each to receive $120 when they reach 17. James C. Hooper to be Executor. Signed, Z. W. Poindexter. Witnesses: Wiley Irby and H. C. Finly. Irby states he died on or about the 4th of July, 1859. Proved 18 Jul 1859.

Dade Co MO Probate Records, Vol. 4; p.528
8 Sep 1870 William T. Scroggs, Public Administer for Dade Co was administrator of the estate of Z. W. Poindexter. He was asked for and been granted permission to place at sale the lands of Zadock totally 470 acres. Debts have not been paid.

Zadock Wright POINDEXTER and Sarah Jane "Sallie" ANDERSON were married about 1837.110 Sarah Jane "Sallie" ANDERSON was born on 20 February 1819 in Garrard County, Kentucky.110 She died on 20 July 1906 at the age of 87 in Sayre, Oklahoma.

PDA Lineage of Bessie Lee Copeland pub Jan 2001, Vol XX, #1 of Newsletter, gave birthplace of Sarah Jane.

1860 Dade Co MO Census, Polk Twp, p.54, Dwelling 350. Sarah, widow of Zadock is living between her son Richard and daughter Mary J who has married Robert Pullan. She is 40. Rebecca F. 15, Zadoc W. 12, Zebedee age 10 are still living at home with their mother. I did not find sons James Robert who would be about 20, nor son William "Arche", age 16.

Sarah remarried to Henry Thompson.

1870 Dade Co MO Census, South Twp, p.112b. Henry T. Thompson age 65, b. North Carolina and Sarah, age 51, b. KY.

by 1880 she was in Texas:

She apparently came on to Oklahoma with her son William A.

William Poindexter, b. Dec 1844, age 55, married 36 years. Born in Missouri; he was a farmer
Mary O., wife, b. Jul 1844. She has had 9 children, 4 are living. Born MO
Sally, mother, b. Dec 1818, age 81, Wd. b. KY. 8 children, 2 living

Several applications to the Dawes Commission, and later the Guion Miller Commission for Indian citizenship, indicated that Sarah's mother Nancy was nee Nancy Gentry and Nancy was Indian, or partly so. At least one application stated that at some time both Nancy and Sarah had been entered on the rolls. I don't believe this was ever proved. The testimony was confused and confusing and those testifying did not seem to know what tribe Nancy had been, nor could they agree on residences.

William Arche Poindexter's failed application to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls, Case #7282, states that his mother's parents were William and Nancy Anderson. He stated that they were born in North Carolina and Nancy was living in Kentucky in 1851. The children of William and Nancy were listed as:
Elias Anderson, killed in the Black Hawk War [an Eli D.[no Elias] Anderson is on the enrollment list of the Black Hawk War on the Illinois state site. He served in J. Bowman's Company, Spies Regt, 1st Brigade; enrolled Jefferson Co. I have no idea if this can be the same person.]
John, dead, date not known
Bettie, living last account in Illinois
Sallie, died 20 Jul 1906
Two children, twins
William, died about 1854

Online databases seem to indicate it's much more likely that Sarah Jane Anderson's mother Nancy Gentry was the daughter of a Samuel Gentry of Surry Co NC. Samuel was married at least twice and it has not been proved which lady, Ann Brooks, or Sarah Brock, was the mother of which of his children. Either way, both wives appear to have families living in Surry Co. There does not seem to be an "Indian blood" in this family line, anymore than there was in the Poindexter family.

Zadock Wright POINDEXTER and Sarah Jane "Sallie" ANDERSON had the following children:

William Arche Poindexter's application to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls, Case #7282, stated he was born Dec 1843 in Crawford Co, MO, placing this family in Missouri some earlier that 1850.

There is an Index to the Indian Enrollment of 1896 and the Poindexter names indicate they may all have been descendants of Zadock & Sarah Anderson Poindexter. The file #5565 is missing from the documents filmed. William A. Poindexter is in the index.

William A. Poindexter, son of Zadock & Sarah Jane, applied for enrollment under the Mississippi Choctaws, as well. Case #5937, 28 Jun 1902
William A. stated that his father Z. W. Poindexter was deceased. He was born in Kentucky, died in Missouri, would be about 82 or 83 if living. His mother, Sallie, age 83, lived with William A. Poindexter. William was age 59, living in Sayre, OK. This was Greer County, Texas when he moved there but is now in Oklahoma; he was born in Missouri. William claims through Rebecca Flynn his grandmother. She might already have been dead by the time of the Treaty of 1830. He knows his grandfather was in the War of 1812. He claimed only for himself but listed his children as James Willis, age 32, single; Sarah P. Tidwell, husband J. D. Tidwell, children Roy and Rosa; William Thomas, single; Rosa L. Rogers, husband James M., children Bessie & Joe; Minnie F. Murphy, husband Stonewall, children Gussie & Bobbie D.

William tried very hard to collect his Indian rights - as late as 16 Oct 1908, still living at Sayre, he applied to the Guion Miller Commission, Case 664, through both parents. His father's ancestor was Bettie Pledge and mother's ancestor was Sarah Anderson. He did not mention Rebecca Flynn in this deposition. He did say that Sarah had died two years previously at the age of 87, in Sayre. She was born in NC and lived in Cumberland Co KY. His mother had told him she was enrolled with her mother's family in 1835 or 1836 and she had the number of it. He says he has seen the number himself on the Tahlequah books. The Council only half passed her case, the Dawes Commission refused. He and his mother lived near Vinita, IT, where there were a lot of Cherokees. Her Indian name was "Sa-lee". William had brought an affidavit from John N. Jones which said he had known old Sallie Anderson in the Cherokee Nation and she got her rights under the old settler roll. He was there when she got her land and money. She was a child of his great uncle [Jones], coming down from old George Anderson who was a Cherokee Indian that served under Washington. George being a brother to his great grandfather, John Anderson.
Note: this is obviously NOT Sarah, mother of William.

I found him in the following two censuses:
1900, Berlin Twp, Roger Mills Co, OK Territory, Hh 422
William Poindexter, b. Dec 1844, age 55, married 36 years. Born in Missouri; he was a farmer
Mary O., wife, b. Jul 1844. She has had 9 children, 4 are living. Born MO
Sally, mother, b. Dec 1818, age 81, Wd. b. KY. 8 children, 2 living.

1910, Sayre Twp, Sayre City, Beckham Co, OK
William Poindexter, age 67, married 47 years. b. MO, parents b. KY. Prop. of the Poindexter Hotel
M.O., wife, age 67, 9 children, 3 living. She was also b. MO, father in KY, mother, TN.

He might have still been living in 1920
Sayre Twp, Beckham Co, OK
Mack A. Jeffries, age 38; his wife Dollie age 47; Nancy Neikirk, 77, mother-in-law
William A. Poindexter, age 78, wd, Lodger. But strangely shows him born in MS, his father in GA, mother in AL. Of course, it's likely he did not give the information.

I believe the Poindexter book has confused the William A. Poindexters. William Anders Poindexter made application for the Mississippi Choctaw Rolls from Nacona, Montague Co, Texas. [He was denied, too.] He gave his wife as Nannie J. It's most likely he is the William A. Poindexter that died there, as listed, not this William Archibald Poindexter.

Zedock Wright POINDEXTER96,110 was born on 25 November 1847 in Dade County, Missouri.110 He died on 18 February 1887 at the age of 39 in Dade County, Missouri.110,113,114

Married Missouri Ann Baker dau of John Baker on 26 Nov 1866, Dade Co MO. She was born 31 Dec 1850, Yalobusha Co MS and d. 22 Feb 1930 in Broken Arrow, OK.
Found another date for the marriage - 17 Jan 1867 by Henry Smith, J.P. - this is from MARRIAGE RECORDS FOR DADE CO, BOOKS A&B 1863-1872.

1870 Dade Co MO, South Twp, p.116a, Dwelling 156. Listed as "Zebedee" Poindexter age 22, but the family is Zadock's. Miss. A. [Missouri] age 19 b. Mississippi; Zachariah age 2, Sarah J. age 6/12, born in February.

1880 Dade Co MO, South Twp, p.158C Zadock Poindexter age 33, b. MO, parents b. KY; Missouri A. age 29, b. MS. Zachary W. age 12, Sarah J. age 10, and Cordia L. age 1.

There is also said to be a child, Virgil Wright Poindexter born in 1875; he must have died as a young child.

The date of death for Zadock given as 8 Feb 1877 in the Poindexter book is incorrect. Zadock is in the 1880 Census in Dade Co MO, age 33 [born 1847] and wife Missouri, age 29 [born in Mississippi].
A database online <http://home.att.net/~kkkeener/john-baker2.html> gives his death as 18 Feb 1887 in either Fulton or Nevada Co. MO. Missouri subsequently married Albert Keener - they apparently moved to Indian Territory.

Son William A. Poindexter gave his birth as 1847, death as 1881 in his application to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls, Case #7282

MISSISSIPPI ROOTS
Tennessee born Martha McCord Hastings, called "Mattie" by her family, married Methodist minister Isham Bailey in 1834. They settled in Yalobusha County, Mississippi (they called it "yellowbush") where their five children were born: Sarah, Delpha, Franklin, Mary and Isa . Rev. Bailey died in July 1845, three months before Martha gave birth to their daughter Isa.

John Baker married in Alabama in 1837 Nancy Margaret Isbell, a Tennessee girl. They migrated to Chickasaw County, Mississippi where their six children were born: William, Zachariah, John, Sarah Abigail, Margaret and Louisa. Soon after baby Louisa's birth Margaret Baker died (December 1846).

John Baker and Martha Bailey did what was necessary to survive in a frontier society -- they remarried very quickly. A prolonged time of mourning for their deceased mates was a luxury they could not afford. Family legend is that Martha weaned little daughter Isa Bailey so she could nurse newly orphaned Louisa Baker.

The first child of the new union was born in 1848, a son named Isham, and a new daughter, Missouri Ann, arrived in 1850. Her name commemorated the familys move to Missouri, and some family members say that she was born in a covered wagon on the way.......

William Arche Poindexter's application to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls, Case #7282, he stated that he thought Zebedee had died in 1878. He said "Do not positively know that he is dead - heard at that time that he died then, and have not heard from him since."
