214. Archibald Edmund WALTERS^1,4 was born on 5 October 1842 in Caswell County, North Carolina.¹⁰³ He died on 7 July 1919 at the age of 76 in North Carolina.

Archibald E. "Archie" married and had at least one son, Archibald G. as the son is named in the will of his grandfather in 1899.

The marriage record gives Archibald E. Walters' parents as A. G. and E. P. Walters. Parents of the bride, Mary E. Richardson, were Ro. P. and E. Richardson.

A (17 May, 1862) promoted to Corporal in Sep. 1862, elected 2nd Sgt., 30 Apr 1863; he was wounded 3 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, returned to duty and appointed 1st Sgt., 31 Dec 1863, promoted to 2nd Lt., 17 Jan 1865; he was captured 3 Apr 1865, at Fairgrounds Hospital, Petersburg, while suffering from bullet wound in right lung. 1900 Census. A. E. Walters, b. Sep 1843, age 56 and Married, was a Boarder in the household of George Burton, Reidsville, Dist 82, Rockingham Co, NC. Occupation was that of farmer. His wife and two younger children were living elsewhere.

I have seen his name as Azariah Edward, researchers of this family state that his gravestone reads Azariah Edmund Walters (1842-1919). Would seem he was named for his grandfathers. He is buried at Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, Rockingham Co, NC. The stone states he was the son of Azariah Graves Walters and Eliza Ann Payne Richardson. The stone is pictured on FindAGrave.com.

Archibald Edmund WALTERS and Mary Elizabeth RICHARDSON were married on 18 March 1868 in Rockingham County, North Carolina.¹⁸⁸ Mary Elizabeth RICHARDSON, daughter of Robert Payne RICHARDSON and Elizabeth WRIGHT, was born on 25 July 1845 in Virginia. She died on 29 November 1916 at the age of 71.

In 1900, Mary seemed to not be living with Archibald. She was in Reidsville, Dist 81, Rockingham Co NC, Hh 140
Mary E. Walters [she is marked B as the household before her, but that was obviously an error - the children were marked W) Born July 1845, age 54, married for 33 years, 4 children. Born in NC as were her parents.

I could not find Mary in 1910. There is a Mary Walters listed as an inmate at the Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, age 67 [Mary was 65], b. Virginia, her parents b. VA. [This is a mental health care facility founded in 1773]
I also considered the possibility that there was a divorce and Mary Elizabeth remarried but I couldn't locate in Rockingham in 1910, any married Mary of the appropriate age that had been married only a short time.

Son Robert's gravestone lists his mother as Mary Elizabeth Richardson.

Her gravestone states:

Her stone, that of Archibald's and sons Robert & Azariah, are all matching. It would be interesting to know when they stones were placed. Azariah died as late as 1961, so it would be fairly certain the stones were not placed at the time of the death of Mary Elizabeth & Archibald.

318	ii.	Azariah Graves WALTERS was born on 21 June 1871 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He died on 13 February 1961 at the age of 89. Azariah is buried in the same cemetery as his parents with a matching stone. 319	iii.	Edmund Richardson WALTERS was born on 9 September 1873 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He died on 22 January 1958 at the age of 84. 320	iv.	Margaret Patton WALTERS was born on 23 May 1884. She died on 17 September 1905 at the age of 21. Margaret, her three brothers and her parents are all buried Greenview Cemetery. Her marker is quite different, probably placed at the time of her death.
