Sixth Generation

30. BENJAMIN CLOPTON was born about 1733 in New Kent County, Virginia.8,43 He died before November 1790 at the age of 57 in Goochland County, Virginia.43

Strangely, Benjamin is the only child of Walter & Mary whose birth is not recorded in the St Peters Parish Register. This is the approximate period of time that Vol I of the Register ends and Vol II [whose beginning pages were bound out of order] begins. In fact there are few entries for 1730 & 31 and almost none for 1732. Much of 1733 seems to be missing. In 1730 his father was appointed Church Warden for a two-year term; it seems unlikely he would forget to register the birth of his son. The minister was the same during the transition from one Register to another; however the Clerk of the Vestry (who perhaps was responsible for recording the data?] died prior to the Mar 1734 Meeting.

His son Walter was appointed administrator of his estate in Nov 1790

In the name of God Amen, I Agnes Clopton of the County of Goochland do make this my last will and testament revoking all former wills. I in the first place give my soul to God who gave it to me and my body to the dust where it shall remain until it shall experience a glorious resurrection. I constitute and appoint my friends Josiah Leake and Richard Ligon executors of this my last will, in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this second day of January 1808.

Then Josiah Leake, one of the executors herein named appeared in Court and Formally and solemnly renounced all right as an executor under this will and refused to qualify as such.
Teste, William Miller
On the eighteenth Day of December 1809 Richard Ligon made bond as executor.

Agnes's parents were Anthony Morgan and Olive Judith Michaux; her maternal grandparents, Abraham Michaux and Susanne Rochet.

THE DOUGLAS REGISTER lists Abra. Michaux in a list of French Protestant Refugees (Hugenots) in Henrico, Virgina. The list is assigned to the period 1714. Shows Abraham with wife, 4 sons, 6 daughters.

BENJAMIN CLOPTON and AGNES MORGAN had the following children:

Walter CLOPTON.

44

ii.

Elizabeth CLOPTON was born on 5 May 1760 in Goochland County, Virginia.46,47

Baptized St. Northam Parish 6 Oct 1761

The following deed indicates Elizabeth was likely married to John Bernand and had died prior to 1791. Bernard is named in this deed as though he was one of the heirs of Benjamin Clopton and Elizabeth is the daughter not mentioned. Daughter, Agnes, if she existed, was likely still a minor in 1791 and would have needed a guardian to sign for her.

Agnes CLOPTON was born in 1772 in Goochland County, Virginia.46

The following deed made by the heirs of Benjamin Clopton makes no provision for a daughter Agnes. A daughter must have been married to John Bernard, but it was most likely the older sister Elizabeth. There is no baptism record for Agnes and I'm not sure there was a daughter of this name - she was the only one for which there was no baptism record. She could of course, died as a young child. She would likely have been a minor at the time of this deed, and would have required a guardian to sign for her, as Bernard did for Anthony Clopton.
