19. IFFA BAKER^2,5,6,7 was born on 8 August 1790 in North Carolina.⁸ She died in 1866 at the age of 76 in Jackson County, Kentucky.⁸

David Bunton gives her birth year as 1790, although I have seen it as 1782 in other places. She gave her age as 60 in the 1850 Census.

Name appears to be Ifee on digital copy of marriage record. Iva in 1850 Census. Itha in the 1860 Census. She had an Indian name - Sookotosh - according to family lore. Some of the family traditions say that John Renta Baker married an Indian woman after killing her husband and this child was hers (or theirs). Some say she was an adopted Indian child. She would appear to be much younger than his other children and probably too young to be a child of Elizabeth. However, there is a family letter stating that she was the daughter of an Elizabeth, probably Elizabeth Terrill or Pherrill. It is possible, too, that Elizabeth, mother of Iffa, was a much younger wife of John Baker. My own DNA studies for racial lines indicate that I have no Indian heritage whatever, but that I am descended from Iffa seems certain as I have a DNA match to a descendant of John Baker via a different child.

1850 Estill Co. Found in Census, Iva Baker, age 60, born S. Carolina, living next door to son William. Living with her is Sally, age 20, Rachael age 15, Nathan age 2. Sally was the youngest daughter as far as is known. I'm not sure who Rachael is unless there was indeed another child. Nathan, quite possibly, Sally's child. If her birthdate as passed along from David Bunton is correct, Iffa was about 50 when Sally was born, and the chances of Rachael being her child are slim.

1860 Jackson Co KY - "Itha" lives with her youngest son William and his family.
According to records of David Bunton, Iffa lived out her old age with youngest son Bill Harrison and died at his home; his children remembered her and remembered the Indian name. They believe the Indian blood to have come from Iffa's mother, Elizabeth ?Terrill, who was possibly half Cherokee. [See earlier note - she probably was not.]

It should be noted that in 1850 and 1860, Iffa is noted an unable to read and write; probably could not write her own name, nor spell it. One of the reasons her correct name is impossible to determine. Nicknames were common in the families, time, and place in which she lived and I think we can safely assume she did use a nickname.

IFFA BAKER and ELISHA HARRISON were married on 28 August 1805 in Madison County, Kentucky.⁹ ELISHA HARRISON¹⁰, son of JONATHAN HARRISON and MERCY TERRY, was born about 1780 in Botetourt County, Virginia.⁸ He died in 1848 at the age of 68 in Estill County, Kentucky.⁸

I did not find Elisha in 1840 - perhaps they were living with one of the married children. They did not seem to be with the two eldest sons, John B. & George, who are found in Madison Co in 1840.

Jonathan C. HARRISON¹⁸ was born about 1818 in Madison County, Kentucky.^12,13,18
John and Jonathan are listed as twins in many databases. David Bunton shows them as born 11 months apart but with the same day and month. The 1850 Census in Madison Co confirms John B.'s age as 43, born in 1807. However, in 1860 in Jackson Co KY, Jonathan's age is given as 41, or a birth year of 1818/1819. In 1870 his age is 51. In 1880 he is 62. All consistent with a birth year of 1818 or so. In the birth order of the children of Elisha & Iffa, he fits very nicely in this place.
The names of the children of Jonathan & Mary Ann came from abstracts of the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Jackson Co KY censuses.

NATHANIEL HARRISON^8,20,21 was born in 1825 in Madison County, Kentucky.^22,23 He died on 19 September 1880 at the age of 55 in Schuyler County, Illinois.²⁴

Next door at #588 is Edward Gabbard age 51, wife Sally 50, Margaret 16, and Jane 14. John W. Gabbard is at #589, age 30, Alethy also 30, with 9 children (including a Jacob, Sally, Edward) and Jacob Gabbard age 80. On p.239, #574 is Jacob Gabbard, age 25, Mahaly age 26, Mary age 3, Nancy age 2, and Edward age 1.
Family is in 1860 & 1870 Census, Schuyler Co IL, Buena Vista Twp. Based on the birthplaces of the children as given, the family moved between the births of Amanda in 1857 and birth of Susan in 1860.

There was an 1865 State Census in Illinois and Nathan Harrison was counted. In his household were 2 males and 3 females under age 10; 1 male and 2 females age 10-20; 1 male and 1 female age 40-50. total of 4 males, 6 females.

From the "Rushville Times" of Sep 24 1880. Mr Nathan Harrison, an old citizen of Buenavista township, died on Sunday of inflamation of the bowels; aged 56 years.
