Stephen was obviously living on the SE Quarter of the NE Quarter of Section 36 by 1 Feb 1836 because on that date he mortgaged this tract to William A. Richardson for $50.00. The mortage was signed 30 Jan 1836, Stephen Avery. He was to pay by 1 Oct 1836.
Note in margin: Fully paid, 21 Mar 1837.

Married (2) Mary Wilson on 22 Feb 1838 in Schuyler Co, IL. His first wife is believed to also have been named Mary, surname unknown. [she may instead have been Pruda Bailey, see note following] Stephen did not become a follower of Joseph Smith and the Mormons as some of his brothers and sisters did. By trade, he was a carpenter and joiner. Stephen died of cholera in 1849 and is listed in the Mortality Census Schedule of 1850.
Clayton, Adams Co IL. Stephen Avery, age 53, Married, b. NY, d. July [1849], carpenter by trade, he died of cholera after being ill for 1 day.

Stephen Avery appears to have been listed twice; he was listed again at Quincy, Adams Co. with the exact same family members. On that page he followed a Joshua Avery, age 20-30 - perhaps an oldest son? Joshua had a spouse of the same age of 20-30, 1m -5, 1f -5, and also a female age 15-20.

The children living with Mary in 1850 had all been born since the 1830 Census.

iii.

Mary F. AVERY was born in 1836 in Illinois.30

This daughter may very well be a child of Stephen's first marriage, although I have no direct proof. She was listed as 14 in 1850, or born circa 1836 and Stephen and Mary did not marry until 1838. Adalaide/Adeline could also have been an infant when they married, or the first child of Mary.

1850 Census, Town of Clayton, Adams Co IL, Hh 117
Mary Avery, age 34, b. TN, Seamstress
All children marked as born in IL. Mary F. 14, Adalaide 12, Sarah 10, Cordelia 8, Lycurces K. 4, and John M. age 10 months.

All children marked as born in IL. Mary F. 14, Adalaide 12, Sarah 10, Cordelia 8, Lycurces K. 4, and John M. age 10 months.

1860 Census. Clayton, Adams Co IL, Hh 2622

Cordelia 17, Adalaide 21, both b. Illinois
Hh 2409. John Avery, age 10, b. IL, lived in the household of Daniel & Frances McBoy.
Hh 2227 A Sarah W. Avery, age 17, lived in the household of Millard & Mary F. Keyes. Mrs. Keyes was 59 years old, b. NH, and cannot be the Mary F., oldest child of Stephen Avery. Nor am I certain this is the correct Sarah Avery, who should be age 20 in 1860.

By 1870, only John E. Avery, age 20, is found in Adams Co. He was a railroad baggage man, living in a rooming house in Quincy.

Stephen AVERY and Mary WILSON had the following children:
