Dorothy attended Muskogee public schools and graduated from Central High School in 1938. She then studied for two years at Gunston Hall in Washington D.C. before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, where she became a member of Pi Beta Phi and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1942. On May 4, 1943 she married Arthur Graham ("Bill") Hays. They had three children. Dorothy was a dedicated mother and tirelessly supported her children's many activities. Faith and family always came first. She and Bill joined the Sequoyah Outing Club on the Illinois River in 1948 and Dorothy remained a member through 2012. Her sixty-five summers at Sequoyah Club included many unforgettable and happy events with lifelong friends. Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church from the time she was a small girl until she left Muskogee in 2010. Her civic and social activities in Muskogee included membership in P.E.O, Keystone Study Club, Junior Service League, Muskogee Garden Study Club, and volunteer work in the church Food Pantry. Just before her 90th birthday, Dorothy moved to Montereau, a retirement community in Tulsa. The move proved to be a good decision, and new friends along with excellent care made Dorothy's final years peaceful and fulfilling. Dorothy's long life was a beautiful example of grace, humility, and generosity, coupled with a strong and enduring faith in God. She was predeceased by her parents and husband of fifty-three years, Bill. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church at 1 pm on January 7, 2014.
