3-1. JONATHAN RAYNOR (Jonathan, Thurston),
b. 4 Mar 1681 at Southampton, L.I., NY, d. 31 Jan 1741, Southampton; m.
27 July 1704 at Southampton,
Irene Herrick, b. ca 1686, d/o William
and Mehitable (HOWELL) HERRICK. Jonathan was probably the first white
resident in Ketchaponack (Westhampton/ Westhampton Beach), having bought
land there as early as 1707 and resided there as early as 1738. Ketchaponack
(or Catchaponack or Ketchabonack) was an Indian word meaning "a place where
large roots grow". Jonathan and Irene RAYNOR had nine
or ten children, at least three of whom (Nathan, William
and Hugh) resided in the Westhampton- Westhampton Beach area.
The others may have died early and/or remained in Southampton. It
is likely some of Jonathan(3) RAYNOR's
children (and their descendants) remained in Southampton. In a will
dated 31 Jan 1740/41, proved 7 Apr 1741, Jonathan RAYNOR names no
wife, but disposes of his large holdings of land in Southampton Town, and
other possessions to his family (Liber XIV, p. 46, N.Y. Wills). The
original RAYNOR homestead was located midway between the Main Street and
the beach on Beach Lane, Westhampton Beach. The homestead remained
in the RAYNOR family until 1861, when it was sold to Silas TUTTLE.
The house burned in 1884 and was rebuilt on the old foundation in 1886
by Mr. TUTTLE.
Jonathan RAYNOR
is the common ancestor of all those RAYNOR descendants included
in this genealogy.
