Reids of Mono Twp., Ontario, Canada

Introduction

Prior to Confederation, Mono Township was part the Cardwell District in wht is now Ontario, Canada. Mono Twp. was also once part of Simcoe County, but it officially became part of Dufferin County on January 24, 1881. Mono stretches from Highway #9 north about twelve miles to Highway #89, and west to its border with the Township of Amaranth about ten miles away. Despite its new designation as a town (formerly "township"), Mono is essentially rural in both geography and character. The closest town of any size is Orangeville, with the city of Toronto an hour's drive to the south. Town of Mono

There were a number of Reid families in Mono Twp. during the nineteenth century, many of them doctors or ministers and all of them with their roots in Protestant Ireland. Although it is difficult to establish relationships in earlier generations, it seems likely that Jeremiah, John and Joseph were brothers who left their native Queen's County in Ireland to seek a new life in what is now southern Ontario, Canada. They may have been accompanied by other family members as well.

Much of this report is based on information found in John Reid's 1868 will; the 1861-1901 census records for Mono Twp.; cemetery transcriptions for Mono Twp. and vital statistics currently available at the Archives of Ontario in Toronto, Canada. Descendants Charlotte Davidson and Carl McCauley have also made significant contributions. However, none of this information is proven, so please check your own sources.

Further contributions and/or corrections are also welcome. Please direct them to karen.black@sympatico Material is intended for personal use only and should not be appropriated without the author's permission.

3. ii. JOHN REID REV., b. Abt. 1792, Queen's Co., Ireland; d. July 30, 1868, Mono Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada.
4. iii. JOSEPH REID, b. 1799; d. February 06, 1886.

Generation No. 22. JEREMIAH2 REID (???1) was born Abt. 1782.

Notes for JEREMIAH REID:

According to the 1861 Mono Twp. census, Jeremiah was born in Canada, which seems unlikely if he and John Reid are brothers, so the relationship between the Jeremiah and John is unproven. In 1861, Jeremiah was living with his daughter-in-law, "Widow Reid," and her children, Elizabeth, 17 and Isabella, 14. This household was Presbyterian.

Children of JEREMIAH REID are:

5. i. ???3 REID, d. Bef. 1861.
6. ii. JOHN REID, b. Abt. 1828, Ireland; d. May 19, 1876.

3. JOHN REID2 REV. (???1 REID) was born Abt. 1792 in Queen's Co., Ireland, and died July 30, 1868 in Mono Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. He married (1) ??? DEWY.  He married (2) SARAH ???. She was born 1819 in Ireland.

Notes for JOHN REID REV.:

John Sr and probably his second wife Sarah (she is only 8 years older than John Jr) appear to be living in the same log home as his son John Jr, his daughter-in-law Sarah and their seven existing children in 1861. Five other relations also occupied the home: teenagers Joshua and Emma Doherty (perhaps Sarah's children from a previous marriage or her nephew and niece) and three Reid relations who were Presbyterians rather than Methodists. Alexander, age 25, was a Canadian born yeoman; Margaret, 61 and Margaret, 23, had both been born in Scotland. In the case of the women, they may have acquired the Reid name through marriage.
John Sr's 1868 Will acknowledged his wife, his daughters and his son. He bequeathed 250 acres--property he described as Lot 18* in the first Concession west of Hurontario Street in the Township of Mono--to his wife Sarah, for her use as long as she remained alive and unmarried. The property was then bequeathed to his son John Jr and subsequently to his grandson, Thomas John. At the time his personal estate included:  3 horses $300; 4 cows $60; 36 sheep & lambs $62; 6 jerseybaillie? $59; 7 pigs $21; farming implements $222; hay $70 and furniture $39 for a total value of $833.

John Sr's 1868 Will also included bequests to his daughters, listing them by their married names. This Will might be the only source of their names in existence; there was no census for Mono Twp before 1861, and in any case, his daughters were probably buried under their married names by then. Each daughter, and in a deceased daughter's case, her descendants, inherited the sum of $20. From this account of John Reid Senior's Will may be gleaned the approximate value of a dollar, as well as the worth of a daughter in 1868.

Although his will did not state his profession, information provided to me by Carl McCauley of Brampton, Ontario indicates that John Reid was the first minister of Zion Church. This church, which was located on Lot 8, Con 3, west of Hurontario Street, was dismantled in 1933. However, John Reid's monument, along with his granddaughter's and several others, has been cemented into a small wall. We visited this cemetery in the spring of 1998. Land for the church and burial ground was originally donated in 1854 by Samuel Hall, who had settled in Mono in 1848. Possibly Samuel was related to Rev. John Reid through the marriage of his son John Reid and Sarah Hall. Information available at the United Church  Archives indicates that Rev. J. Reid was employed one year at Humber and Trafalgar in 1835, one year at Nelson in 1836, two years at Humber and Markham from 1837 and for 29 years as a local Elder at Mono Centre from 1839 onwards.

The T. Reid of Hamilton who wrote a memoir for Rev. John Reid 8 Jan 1870 in the Christian Journal, providing important details about his background, is believed to be his nephew, Tobias Reid: "In the year 1818 the deceased and his beloved wife, sister of the late Rev. Henry Dewy, came to this country,  and after a few changes in this land they left Trafalgar in March, 1832, and settled in the Township of Mono, where he ended his days in peace and plenty." This obituary also notes that Rev. J. Reid was born in Queen's County, Ireland in 1792 "of truly Christian parents, who were among the first fruits of Methodism, established in that part of the kingdom by its founder Rev. John Wesley. His father died while he was young, so that our subject was early left in the hands of his mother, whose intelligence and deep piety had prepared her for the training of her son. It is said that from a child he took great pleasure in the Holy Scriptures, which, in early life, made him wise unto salvation..." (Christian Journal, Feb.11, 1870, p.2, 0.)

*John Reid's address is listed as Lot 1, Concession 19, Mono Twp. in the 1837 Home District Directory.

"June 4, p.3: Dr. J.B. Reid -The news that Dr. J.B. Reid, F.R.C.S., had passed away in his sleep sometime during Sunday morning, May 24, at his home, 6 Fairlawn Ave., Toronto, caused profound sorrow throughout Tillsonburg and the surrounding countryside, where for forty years he had been engaged in the practice of medicine. Dr. Reid had contracted a cold while planting trees on his farm near Orangeville but no serious outcome was anticipated. On Saturday night he suffered an attack of heart trouble which was not thought to be of a grave nature, and from which he was thought to have recovered. After rising on Sunday morning he lay down again for a rest and about ten o'clock Mrs. Reid was shocked to discover that he had passed away.

The late John Buchanan Reid, was born in Mono Township, near Orangeville, on July 31, 1861. After his education in the public and high schools of the district he taught school for a time. While teaching school he secured works upon the anatomy of the body, the study of which turned his attention to medicine as a life calling. Subsequently he graduated in medicine and surgery at Trinity College, and in 1911 after post-graduate work in London, England, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, a much coveted and honoured distinction in the medical profession. Soon after graduation, Dr. Reid located in Tillsonburg, and commenced a professional career which continued in this town and district for over forty years until a few months ago, when Dr. and Mrs. Reid took up their home in Toronto. During his long residence in Tillsonburg, Dr. Reid won the esteem and respect of all classes of citizens. In his professional capacity he measured up to the highest ethical standards of his profession. He gave himself unsparingly in the service of humanity and financial reward was for him a secondary consideration. His deeds of kindness were innumerable. He was a splendid type of the old-fashioned family physician, now rapidly disappearing in this age of specialization. Dr. Reid was an Independent Conservative in politics. While he did not take an active part in municipal affairs he was keenly interested in everything that made for public welfare and served on the high school and public library boards for several years. He was an active worker in the Temperance movement. Quite early in life he became a member of the Methodist church, and during his long residence in Tillsonburg he was an active member of what is now St. Paul 's United church, holding various official positions form time to time, and was engaged as a worker at the time of his death. Dr. Reid is survived by his wife, May Spence, a daughter, Mrs. E. McKim, of Lucknow, three sons, Dr. Spence Reid, Dr. George Reid, and Fred, and also several brothers and sisters including Dr. Hannah and Minerva Reid, of Toronto.

A private funeral service was conducted at 6 Fairlawn Ave., Toronto, on Tuesday evening, May 26, by the Rev.A.W. Hone, of Tillsonburg, assisted by Rev.A.E. Marshall, and Rev. H.L. Partridge, of Toronto. On Wednesday interment was made in the family cemetery, Mono College, Orangeville. Amongst those attending from Tillsonburg were: Rev. A.W. And Mrs. Hone, Lansing, and Mrs. Rodgers, Stephen and Mrs. Scott, John and Mrs. Palmer, Mrs . Wallace Denton, Mrs Joel Bate, Dr. D.G. Leatherdale and Alex. Reynolds. Notes for REV. DAVID "DENTON" FRANKS:

There are numerous Franks in Yorkshire, England where David Denton Franks claimed to have been born, and he certainly trained for the ministry in Yorkshire. However, a search of the St. Catherine's records has failed to turn up any birth registration for David Denton Franks, born 14 Feb 1855. That his parents failed to register his birth seems unlikely, given their middleclass roots.

But David (Denton) may also have been the son of one Thomas Frank(s), a Yorkshire miner and Barbara Leckenby. Thomas, age 21 and already widowed, and Barbara, also age 21, were married in April 1842, in Hawnsby. Their children included a David, baptized fairly closely to David Denton Franks' alleged birth date, and at least two girls.

Notes for JOHN (SMITH) ENTWISTLE:

John S. Entwistle was reared by his paternal grandparents in Belfast, Ireland after his mother died from puerperal septicaemia in Toronto.

John grew up to serve in the First World War, to establish his own accountancy firm, to dabble in politics and serve in almost too many organizations to mention. He was aided by the perfect helpmeet, Clara Gwendolyn Franks, the daughter of an itinerant Methodist minister. In addition to his various club memberships, John S. Entwistle also served in various associations, usually in an executive capacity. He was President of Board of Governors of the Certified Public Accountants Association in 1946; Accountant to the Royal Commission on Milk in 1947; elected by Council of the Royal Society of Arts in Great Britain in 1948; served on the Executive Council of the Toronto Board of Trade in 1950; Chairman of the Board of Trade Club 1937-38 and Director of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce from 1946-1951+.

His life ended at 62. His high blood pressure contributed to his uremia, so he probably died of kidney failure. He is buried in Parklawn Cemetery, Toronto with his wife who lived to a ripe old age, and their only son, who was killed by a streptoccocus infection before he reached the age of seven.
