Ken and May Nielsen of Otaki recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and say the time has passed quickly.
They first met nearly sixty years ago in Koputaroa after Ken helped May's father get his stranded tractor out of the path of an impending flood. Ken was invited back to midnight supper for his efforts, but "we didn"t really have much to say to each other", said May.
Three years later they briefly met again, but it wasn't for another three years that they started going out, after attending a dance together.
The war intervened early in their marriage. Ken served in the South Pacific and May returned to her parent's farm. After the war Ken worked the land, alternating between farmwork and bushwork, which he preferred.
"All work, no play".
Meanwhile May raised seven children.
Retired to Otaki, their advancing years prevent many of their old pastimes, but they still enjoy the occassional drive. Parents: John Thomas NIELSEN and Eva Violet JELLYMAN.
